BONNEY LAKE, Wash. -- A 16-year-old boy drowned Thursday afternoon while swimming in Lake Tapps.

Police say the teen was swimming with friends and family at Allen York Park when he disappeared. The teen, who was a sophomore at Bonney Lake High School, was under water for approximately 3-5 minutes when he was rescued from the water.

People on the scene performed CPR on the teen, and medics took over when they arrived. They were able to regain a pulse and he was rushed to a local hospital, where he died a short time later.

According to a spokesperson from the Sumner School District, the boy was a football player at Bonney Lake High. Coaches and staff met with the team Thursday evening to tell them about the drowning.

The spokesperson said Thursday was the last day of school at Bonney Lake High, but the school will open tomorrow to offer counseling for grieving students and parents.
