Teen with BB gun causes scare at Olympia schools

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- A teen showing off a realistic BB gun to a friend inadvertently caused a scare at two Olympia schools Thursday morning, according to the Olympia Police Department.
A teacher called 911 to report a man with what appeared to be a rifle near Jefferson Middle School and Capital High School, and principals at nearby schools were alerted.
Officers arrived and found two teens sitting across from Jefferson Middle School. One of the teens was showing his friend a pellet gun that was a realistic imitation of an M-4 military rifle.
According to police, the teen had no idea his actions had prompted a 911 call.
Police are taking the opportunity to warn the public that law-enforcement and school personnel are on heightened alert about firearms near schools because of recent national events.
“Use good judgment when transporting either actual firearms or other things that can easily be mistaken for lethal firearms, such as models, toys, paintball guns and BB guns,” Chief Ronnie Roberts said in a press release.
This was the second false alarm this week after Reeves Middle School and Roosevelt Elementary School were locked down Tuesday while officers looked for a reported man with a gun.
My daughter's school NJROTC has a drill team that uses fake rifles, and they use the real thing for a target shooting team - and have an on-campus shooting range. No one would notice, or care, if they saw someone with a rifle. They would assume it's a drill or target team member.
When will they start posting armed vigilante security guards in schools so they can shoot kids like this on site
This is why people need to be educated about firearms and not just have a purely irrational response of dread and fear. We are programing people to be afraid of objects, be afraid of defending themselves, and unable to use reason and thought when evaluating situations.
Probably wasn't the smartest idea, that looks pretty realistic. I know if someone pointed it at me I would take it for a real gun. That said, just more PANIC PANIC PANIC when it comes to the topic of guns in the government run school system and the media.....
Nice looking pellet gun, course most teenagers don't practice discretion very well. It is noted that this should include pastries, plastic soldiers, squirt guns, hello kitty bubble blowers, gun images and gun t-shirts thanks to Eric Holder and his over the top gun hysteria.

What an idiot. He should have known better. I'm curious, how old are these teens? Should they be in school?
It's just part of our gun culture. I remember as a kid hearing about kids being shot and killed by police for playing with Laser Tag guns. These teens need to be a bit more careful. And with the paranoia going around, it may not be a police officer who mistakes your BB gun for the real deal, it could be someone with a real gun.Â

That would depend upon what they are doing with it... if they are pointing it at people, yes, it could happen... just like if they were to point it at a police officer..Â
I also remember the incident you mention...
@lakeview So what you are saying is that if I had walked by these kids I would have had no control and had to pull my gun on them just because I seen a realistic looking BB gun?
@DarkParty @lakeview No, you wouldn't have been involved at all. The gun would have automatically jumped out of its holster and shot the kid by itself, because guns kill people. Welcome to the "logic" of the looney bin.
