Teen wounded by police in November incident dies
TACOMA, Wash. -- An 18-year-old man wounded by police when he tried to run over a Tacoma police officer during a traffic stop in November has died, Tacoma police said.

Austin Welling's death Tuesday night was confirmed by the Pierce County Medical Examiner, who says the exact cause of death has not been officially determined yet but an autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.

An officer pulled Welling over for driving a stolen vehicle near East 34th Street and East 'F' Street in Tacoma late in the evening on Nov. 27. When the officer exited his patrol car Welling put the car into reverse and attempted to run over the officer, said Mark Best with Tacoma police.

Best said the officer fired several shots, striking the driver. The driver was taken to a local hospital and was reportedly taken off life support shortly before his death Tuesday night.

The officer was not hurt.
