Thief arrested after rampage with street sweeper

PUYALLUP, Wash. -- A man was arrested after allegedly stealing a street sweeper from a Puyallup storage facility and causing thousands in damage to nearby property.

The man broke into the Puyallup River Self Storage on Wednesday night, stole the street sweeper, and then drove through a chain link fence to escape, said Det. Ed Troyer with the Pierce County Sheriff's Department.

The thief eventually made it to Puyallup Tribal property and caused more damage when he crashed through the entrance gate to Fife Sand and Gravel.

A Fife police officer eventually caught the man as he tried to walk away from the sweeper and placed him under arrest.

The suspect, identified by Det. Troyer as Brock Watkins, has been booked into the Pierce County Jail for investigation of burglary, motor vehicle theft, and malicious mischief. Officers say Watkins also had a suspended license.

Det. Troyer says all told, Watkins caused $2,500 in total damage.
