Thieves rob widower of his wife's final gift
SEATTLE -- A youth pastor from California came to the Pacific Northwest to spread his wife's ashes, but thieves threatened to derail that plan when they broke into his vehicle and stole an irreplaceable gift.
Morgan Quiroz and his wife, Maggie, loved the Pacific Northwest. When Maggie died, there was no question where her ashes would be spread.
The two youth pastors were married for just a year when Maggie was diagnosed with breast cancer. The cancer soon spread to her bones, lungs and liver.
"We first found out it was spreading to her lungs and liver in October," Quiroz said.
She died three months later, but before she passed away Maggie left her husband a special gift. She left her voice on a recordable children's book called "Under the Same Moon."
Morgan has the first page memorized.
"This is for you anytime you feel alone, or wondering how much I love you, I recorded this for you," he said.
But thanks to some heartless thieves, Maggie's voice is now gone.
The thieves broke into Quiroz's SUV Monday afternoon while he was parked near the Space Needle.
They ransacked the car, ripped out a TV, took laptops, an iPod and, most importantly, a bag containing Maggie's book.
"None of the ashes had gotten out but it was just disrespectful," Quiroz said.
Quiroz is devastated by the crime, and the only thing that can comfort him is the sound of his wife's voice.
"It's a kid's book and I know it sounds silly but it means the world me," he said.
