Troopers: Texting driver nearly lost his head in crash

ABERDEEN, Wash. -- A teen suspected of texting and talking on a cell phone while driving escaped with only minor injuries when he crashed, causing a fence post to spear his windshield.
Washington State Patrol Trooper Russ Winger said the teen was eastbound on Highway 12 near Aberdeen Lake Road on Saturday when other drivers reported seeing him texting and talking on the phone while driving erratically.
The 18-year-old driver made a U-turn a short time later and then crashed off the side of the highway and into a fence.
A piece of the fence smashed through pickup truck's windshield and "nearly took his head off," Winger said of the driver.
The teen suffered only facial lacerations and was taken to a nearby hospital to be checked out.

A reply to GPS speed shut down phone. So what if you are moving and your GPS shuts down your phone. Kidnapped victims, passenger in car those using common sense. And now there phone doesn't work.
And spoons made you fat, sue them.
Lets just Make Common Sense the law. When your driving (shut up/no txt) and drive.
These texting laws are not meant to stop people from texting but increase revenue for the state by levying fines. What should take place is laws forcing the cell phone providers to use the GPS feature to disable the texting function when the phone is moving more than sat 10 miles per hour. One of the abilities of GPS s is to determine speed as well as location. Every time the government tries to make laws it is always focused on generating revenue from its citizens and really never solves the problem.
Maybe cell phone providers could be sued for allowing the phones to function while in motion. That might force them to disable the texting function while phone is moving.
Please tell me the fence post toke out his phone.
Thank goodness he is safe from this. Â Now, how do you feel about being a bonehead?
More than half of the people talking trash because the kid was texting while driving have probably texted while driving at some point. Some people just need to learn the hard way.
And I bet all his friends and the other kids & adults are thinking it was just him. It would never happen to them. I'd wise up if I were you & live life a little longer.
Lucky kid. Hope he learned a valuable lesson. By the way KOMO that is a fence board not a fence post. Glad to see you are keeping up on the illiteracy of your news stories.
twerp is lucky all he did was ruin mommy's car. what a dumb-sh^t.
Â
so tired of the cell phone zombie age we are now in.
Sweet Jesus. Lesson LEARNED, I hope. I admit I occasionally text while driving, but only when I'm stopped a red light, or I don't look at the phone at all while I'm writing the message. Even then I only do it when it's really important. It's a miracle nobody was killed in this case.
kid is really lucky that the board hit the steering wheel and bent the steering wheel sending the board to the drivers right  instead of taking off his head!
I have texted while driving... but only when there is no traffic around, and when on a multi lane highway, on a straight stretch..  my best average on words per mile is 5 letters per mile... Find the letter, look at the road.. position the thumb over the letter while watching the road,  then verify it is over the correct letter, and select the letter while watching the road.. look back at the display, see that it is the wrong letter... and try again with the same results, ...  then say the heck with it, and get the hands free device, and call them...LOL
Airplane pilots have to be able to communicate, write instructions down, and still maintain control of the plane, whether on the ground or in the air.. so, the experience of doing that kind of stuff has helped.. Knowing when you can actually do something, and when you cannot, and when you shouldn't even try..
Â
@Mr. H  airplane pilots use auto pilot while flying and they don't have traffic or solid objects to hit up there. If you are a pilot i hope you don't text while landing or taking off. remember if you do it so does the other guy and you just might be a victim then.
Better luck next time!
Kid's lucky to be alive!
people are alot like dog's you can try to teach them some thing till your brain explods. mainly teenager's . dont text and drive. no conversation is that importent . mainly girles think they can multy task. then they get in to wreck. and tee's now days dont want to wear a seat belt because it's not kool. there friends are dieing all around them for the same stupid reasons. but they are to hard headed to learn. in my small town. we had a woman cop thet thought she could text and drive. she took out a pole. imagine that
@Robert Yocum i don't even know where to begin...

 @Phucking Ursister exactly...yikes!
I say if a person is convicted of texting and driving, take away both the drivers license and their cell phone.
Sad thing is even without phones as a distraction there are idiot drivers that don't need a distraction to run you off the road. There is just air heads that can't drive period! They run off the road just changing the radio station or looking in the rear view mirror, Just sayin....
It's NOT illegal to call 911 on your cell phone while driving to tell the operator that there's an erratic driver on the road (probably texting) I plan on doing this the next time I see one! This guy should never be able to drive again.. or own a cell phone. Or at least not at the same time!
Reminiscent of many days walking along the sidewalk in Manhatten, dodging the "cell-phone zombies" who walk into phone poles, other people, and various obstacles, as they gaze lovingly at their tiny cell-phones. Just wait. How long will it be before the medical establishment proclaims the dreaded new "disease" : cell-phone addiction.
@Todd Nichol Did you see the video KOMO posted last week of the guy who was so busy blabbing on his phone, he fell off the subway tracks right onto his stupid head!  At least he didn't get hit by a train. DumbA%@!!
It is unbelievable how many people I still see texting and driving!
It is so strange to think that 15 years ago we managed to get from point A to point B without the use of cell phones. We could actually drive down the road, walk through the grocery store, go to the park without talking to someone who wasn't with us. There are laws about talking and texting but some of the people that have commented today seem so willing to break the law. I manage to get from my house to work without answering my phone or texting anyone. I get so tired of going places and listening to other peoples conversations. Be careful what you say. I heard one lady at the store give out her bank account and SSN and her mothers maiden name. When I mentioned to her that if I heard others who might not be honest probably heard she got mad at me. Time and place is important to remember. Driving is not the time or place. I bet this the kid in this story thought he could handle it too.
@taxpro and gas was 85 cents a gallon!!!
You know I manage to text and drive everyday without wrecking, it's not hard to pay attention to the road, if there is massive traffic, I won't. Just be aware of your surroundings, if your drifting around then you should know better. I know I'm going to get slammed, but oh well. Have at it.
@Phucking Ursister So you admit to breaking the law each and every day? Â
@Phucking Ursister You and probably everyone else texting feels the same way. That should increase the odds of a serious accident. You've got to ask yourself how you would feel if a texting driver hit you.
Â
Â
Â
@Phucking Ursister At least you are honest. I sure hope one of my kids isn't crossing the street when your head is down though.
@Phucking Ursister And hopefully, we'll never have to share the same road.
Up until now, this young idiot had managed to drive and text without EVER wrecking...and so have you. And you'll be able to say that until the day YOU wreck. Hopefully you wont hurt anyone but yourself, but you cant guarantee that, can you?
Hopefully that accident was bad enough to scare the crap outta him! He should be court ordered to do some lectures at surrounding schools where he can show them what happened to him because of texting/talking and driving.
Let's get rid of texting all together. Make phones just for sending and receiving calls. I miss the old days.
I see a lot of comments here about stupid drivers and texting and this kid should pay dearly. But, I would be willing to bet $100, that at least a 3rd of the commenters here text occasionally while driving, and talk on their cell phones frequently while driving.
@northwestsurfer Not a chance. I spend to much time dodging texting/cell chatting drivers
Â
Next time you see one at a stop light, try honking, yelling, waving your hands in the air and see if they notice. They're totally gone.
Â
Â
 @northwestsurfer i don't do either.
At a minimum, I hope he gets a reckless driving & usage of cell phone driving ticket.  Â
@choliscott won't bother him at all his parents will be paying the insurance bill not the 18 yr old.
Dumb ! Glad he didn't kill anyone else. A friend of mine was just killed last week by an inattentive driver who swerved into their lane hitting my friend head on. No matter how many people die this way, idiots don't listen and continue to yak on the phone and text. WHAT IS SO IMPORTANT that you have to put other peoples lives on the line, your life I don't care about, but mine, my family, my friends, I DO care about.Â
Â
Maybe we should all go back to drinking and driving, what's the difference, except that I get to play the roulette wheel too and possibly kill, paralyze, cause brain damage, or amputation and/or leave you disfigured, sounds FAIR to me.Â
Â
PARENTS TAKE AWAY THE PHONE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That could save some lives.
@TheMule He's 18, its probably his own plan. So good luck. Better off taking away whats left of that truck.
Something needs to be done about this... It's getting really bad out there.. I can spot a texting driver a mile away they drive so bad... This isn't doing our insurance rates any favors either... Something needs to be installed on these phones that will lock the phone up while the vehicle is in motion. Period. (And it has to be at the hardware-level, not an app that can be easily bypassed.)
@Poisonous Giraffe It's getting to the point that you can also spot a driver talking on their phone also.
@choliscott  @Poisonous Not everyone is swerving around killing folks. Just asians, women, and hillbillies.
I'm not a believer that talking on a cell held up to your ear is any different than steering with one hand on your lap while talking to a friend in the car, but the masses and laws say otherwise... However, not looking at the road to check a text message, or typing one is insanity and cannot be argued. While its frustrating to be on a long trip, get a message alert, and not be able to do anything about it until you stop, life actually does go on, and if somebody is in the car, you can have them read it, and respond for you. It's Russian Roulette to text and drive, with the difference that you are forcing others on the road to play your game.
@eichler34 holding the phone or talking on speaker phone is no different. a one armed person can drive a car so can a person holding something. your mind tends to wonder off what you are doing when you talk on the phone.
@eichler34 I know people have been eating, reading, applying make-up, smoking..ect for years. Even operating CB radios. It seems to be more of a generational thing where people are so plugged in to their electronic social lives, it causes stress that they may miss something important.  I read an article where they ticketed a lady who pulled over on the highway to answer a call and that is supposed to be for emergencies only.Â
sounds to me like she did the right thing... pulling over,... but giving her a ticket for doing that?? Must have been raining and the officer that pulled in behind her didn't see she was yakking on the phone.. and went to see what was wrong..
@eichler34 I liked your last sentence especially but I don't agree that talking on the phone isn't an issue: The only problem with holding the phone to your ear is it involves dialing the number first - same as texting because it takes your eyes off the road. People love their phones and make more than one call while driving.Â
Â
All the best - have a good day.
Wow. That kid was lucky. Glad that he survived and hope that he doesn't do this again.
Â
Its time that the use of cell phones while driving (texting or dialing and holding the phone to one's ear)  be treated as impaired driving with accompanying hefty fines because its every bit as dangerous as drugged or drunk driving.Â
Â
I've seen so many people texting or talking on hand held phones driving erratically, swerving across lanes of traffic on I-5 and in the city that if it weren't for defensive drivers, these jerks would have caused a lot of fatal accidents.
Â
Most people thumb their noses at a $109 ticket, but if the fine were bumped up to $532 (the current fine for feeding wildlife in public parks - seems more logical to apply it to dangerous drivers) people would be more likely to obey the law. Especially when their insurance rates leap as a result of their selfishness.
Does not matter whether you are 18 or 16 or 46 or 64. Age does not matter when it comes to pure selfishness and stupidity to text and drive. We have all seen idiots on the road doing this daily. You may as well put them in the same category as drinking & driving, because it is just as risky for the other people on the road to be killed because of these idiots.
I was driving this week and a mini van was ahead of me driving very 'jerky'. She would speed up, slow down, hit the brakes for no reason, swerve around and repeat the process. I chose to safely pass her, and what I saw made me SO MAD! She had kids in the car including 2 car seats and one small kid in the front seat!!!
ARRRRGGGHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
