Truck hits and kills pedestrian in Island Co.

OAK HARBOR, Wash. -- A 60-year-old man was killed Wednesday night when a large box truck struck him as he attempted to walk across a road.

The crash happened at 6 p.m. on State Route 20 just north of Oak Harbor, according to Washington State Patrol trooper Mark Francis.

Francis said the man was heading westbound across the road when the truck hit him. There were no streetlights or crosswalks in the area, and Francis said the man was wearing dark clothing.

Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol factored into the crash, and the driver, a Tacoma man, will most likely not face any charges. The road will be off limits to traffic well into Wednesday night while troopers investigate, but a detour has been set up.
