CHEHALIS, Wash. - The Lewis County sheriff's office says underage drinking and poor choices led to the death of a 16-year-old boy who was run over early Saturday while lying in the middle of a Lewis County road.

Detectives found that the teen, identified as Tyler Shawn Gonzales of Chehalis, had been drinking with other juveniles at a nearby residence and for some reason he decided to lay down in the roadway while wearing dark clothing.

As he lay there, he was run over by a 2006 Lincoln Navigator SUV being driven by a 50-year-old Onalaska woman.

State troopers were called to the scene, on Brockway Road near Chilvers Road, about a mile west of Chehalis, at 2:30 a.m. Saturday.

An investigation found that the SUV was heading north on Brockway Road when it came to a slight right-hand curve with no streetlights. As the SUV rounded the curve, it struck Gonzalez.

"This is another sad and tragic incident involving alcohol and juveniles," said Lewis County Sheriff Steve Mansfield. "Poor decisions and choices were made with the end result being the loss of a young man’s life."

No charges were filed against the driver of the Lincoln Navigator.
