Vancouver pit bull kills bulldog in front of family
VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) - Vancouver animal control officials say a pit bull that killed an English bulldog in front of the owners was put down last week.
The Vancouver Columbian reports the pit bull had attacked 7-year-old Gracie after coming off its owner's leash.
Gracie's owners were walking their dog and had stopped to get the mail when the pit bull first lunged at the family, which included two 6-year-old girls.
The pit bull eventually killed Gracie after latching onto the dog's neck for about a half hour.
The attack happened in front of Gracie's home.

My (at the time) friend had a pit bull. My daughter was going to do a sleep over with his daughter until I found out they had one. I guess he took offense since we're not friends anymore. I'll take my kid's life over offending someone and losing a friend because of an unpredictable breed.
The owners of the vicious pit bull should be fined an outragous amount of money like $25,000.
All this crap about how "any breed can attack if provoked" makes me laugh. I would rather be attacked my 100 pomeranians than one intact male pit bull. Pit bulls should be exterminated.
death by a thousand cuts(bites) sounds like an appropriate
and very deserving!

Â
Â
 @Antistatism An appropriate and very deserving what? English your second language?
 @Antistatism  @Hagar Third language? Way cool! I still prefer being attacked by little dogs. I remember the funny scene in Men in Black where Agent K fights Frank the Pug...
@Hagar
"An appropriate and very deserving end to your ignorance!"
Can't edit post here I guess LOL
English is actually my third language, but thanks for asking! =)
This is one breed that should be put out of the worlds misery. Yes I've heard all the B.S. My dog is friendly, my dog loves kids (As a snack maybe) My dog wouldn't hurt anyone. The same overused words to describe pit bulls. These dogs may have been stable at some time in the far past. Unfortunately due to inbreeding and breeding to get the dogs more aggressive for fighting has ruined a breed. Pit Bull owners are like any other dog owner out there. They love their dogs and believe that they are harmless. Any dog can be dangerous, some more dangerous than others. The reason we here about all these attacks is usually because the owners are irresponsible and don't know how to handle their dogs.
It's in a pit bull's blood to be an aggressive attack dog. Even the sweetest and most well mannered pit bull could snap. It seems like every single time there is a pit bull attack, the owner always says the exact same thing: "I don't understand! He's such a sweet dog! He's never done anything like this before!".
Â
I have to rant here. I can't contain it.
Â
I go down to the Edmonds Marina Beach Off Leash Dog Park a lot. There are a lot of pit bulls that are there of all varying temperament. But the pit bulls that are out of control. The ones that play too rough, pick on the smaller dogs, and run into people like they aren't there all have a few things in common.
Â
One, they are male. How do I know they are male? Because two, they are still intact, non-snipped. Third, their owners all look the same, like they just walked off the TV show Jersey Shore or the set of a Spike Lee Joint in the late 90's. I didn't choose the thug lifestyle, the thug lifestyle choose me, werd to yo mother.
Â
I thought my dog was going to get eaten one day, monster of a pitbull picking on him mercilessly and the owner would do nothing. Finally, with my dog covered in pit bull drool from being pulled down a few times decided it was time to go. Damn thing followed us all the way to the double gates and the owner, oh he did nothing.
Â
I've seen well mannered pit bulls at the dog park - and the point of all of this - I blame the owners. These wanna be gangstas who get a pit bull because they want a "tough" dog. Hey, leave your feckin' tough dog at home because the Jack Russels, Frenchies, pugs, and various small terriers don't want to get ripped to shreds.
Â
I'm so sorry this family went though this, and be mindful, a bulldog itself isn't exactly an easy dog to kill. Damn straight put it down. Should put the feckin' owner down to,
I would loved to hear at least a follow up on the pit bull's owner(s). Good idea?
if i see a pit lock on any living thing, i'll try my best to find something heavy to pummel it with.
 @SwampThing If I see that, I'll try my best to find my pistol & USE it on the pit ASAP!

 @ulquiorra Yeah, the fact that that their jaws are incredibly strong make them an incredibly dangerous breed.
You so rarely hear of other breeds of dogs MAULING another dog or worse, a human being. These monsters don't let go. That has to be a trait of the breed.Â
Â
I hope all you pit bull owners keep them tight on a leash, and away from people and animals.
I hope you don't wake up one day with half a face, or that you find yourself not waking up at all.
Good luck to ya!!
 @countyclerk  @ulquiorra The scary thing about pit bulls is their strong jaw, and the fact that they lock their jaws on their prey. It is almost impossible to get them to let go. Some animals should be/should have been left wild animals. People think they own this world and think they can make some animals pets and you just can't...Â
 @Melissa Foster Pit bulls were never wild animals. Dogs today are a FAR call from the animals they were bred down from.
Here comes the, "It's a gentle breed and are only violent because of their owner's fault" groupies.
 @jelisized It's the damn truth! My cousin had a bit bull and it was the most friendly dog I had ever seen! The sweetest thing! Never did a damn thing!
@Zoso @jelisized I'm sure there are some sweet pitbulls out there, but like all animals, they are unpredictable. No pitbull owner can guarantee their dog won't attack someone or something. Again, people can pretty much handle a dog bite from say, a poodle or a collie, but certainly not from a pitbull! You would literally have to shoot the dog to get him/her to stop attacking.
 @jelisized Just give her a few minutes, fyrefox will be replying any moment now.......
Since AP likes to omit parts of the story including the part about the pit bull's latching on the bulldog's neck for 30 mins, here's the link to full story:Â http://www.columbian.com/news/2012/aug/26/animal-control-puts-down-pit-bull-after-attack/
 @nikeyia6:Â
Thank you for the link - it was MUCH more informative.
Â
What I find curious is that they are saying the pit "slipped it's leash". There are some dogs that due to their physical charateristics, should NOT be on a simple neck collar - they should be in a chest haress so they CAN'T "slip their leash.Â
Â
I also find it incredibly sad that the women walking the pit did absolutely NOTHING when the attack started, and then after seeing the results they only worried about losing their dog. They then moved the dog into Oregon to try to avoid having it taken & put down - endangering another neighborhood.
Â
And for those wondering about why "nobody did anything", it says in the linked story that the father of the 2 girls tried to seperate the dogs, hit it hard enough to break a broom over the pit, and was also physically trying to seperate the dogs & tried "gouging it's eyes". What does it tell you that despite all this intervention the pit refused to let go?
Â
Also, reading the story, I find it completely WRONG that the police did not take a report, that they considered this a "problem between 2 neighbors". What if the bulld0og had not been there, and the pit had instead latched on to one of the children? Would it still be a "problem between 2 neighbors"?
Â
Yes, there are "good" dogs & "bad" dogs, and a lot of it depend on the humans raising them. OIn this case, it sounds like the pit was treated in such a way that it viewed anything small & vulnerable as something to attack - and the women walking it simply encouraged that by not trying to stop the attack.
 @LocalLady  @nikeyia6: I went to the Brier police department about a neighbor's pit that attacked me and my little dogs but ran off when I screamed for help. The police officer's response was "call 911 if the dog draws blood". I now am armed when I walk my dogs and that pit is dead if it crosses me again. Poor misunderstood pit bulls. I am not upset at the officer; I am upset at the laws and limited resources. And my neighbor, of course.
 @LockesChild  @LocalLady  @nikeyia6: I know, man. I am not happy that I am being forced to carry. I sold all my firearms when I got back from Vietnam, but I always supported the right to bear arms (even though I am left of center). I just chose not to after seeing what they can do. And now a neighbor has forced me to arm myself for protection. I am quite po'ed, to be honest.
 @Hagar  @LocalLady  @nikeyia6:Yet another reason to arm yourself for self-defense. A man had to shoot and kill an attacking pit bull in the park across the street from me. Had not been armed then his dog would definitely have died and he would have sustained serious injury.
So much ignorance around this breed, and only have press highlighting it is making it worse. I have spent a lot of at a local rescue and have interacted with hundreds of pits over the years. The sensational stories come from pits that have been royally abused and mistreated. It's a reflection of their owners, and their owners should be held accountable. Pits are frequently the most loyal and loving, but you wouldn't hear about those on the news...
Now days all I get from these witch hunt stories about pitbulls is how uneducated most people are and how easily they are manipulated by the media. It's very telling about current predicament America is facing today - a lot of blind leading the blind these days! :(
@Kyle Kesterson You are assuming this pitbull was abused or neglected. Sorry, but I am not buying that "point the finger" rhetoric anymore. These pitbulls are DANGEROUS. Dare you to leave a pitbull alone with a child in the same room versus leaving a cockapoo with a child.
Myth: Pit bulls are very aggressive.
FACT: Pit bulls are no more or less aggressive than any other type of dog. Many of the behaviors we expect from and encourage in dogs, including hunting, tracking, guarding, and even playing, are actually modified forms of aggression.
Although pit bulls have a reputation for aggression toward other dogs, in fact, many other breeds and types of dogs are also known for such aggression. Interdog aggression is actually a very common behavior and is not limited to pit bull type dogs.
Pit bulls may be aggressive toward small animals, but again, this is common with all breeds and types of dogs. Dogs are essentially domesticated predators. Many dogs will exhibit predatory behavior toward small animals that they consider prey.
A few pit bulls may be aggressive toward people, but again, this is not unique to pit bulls. All breeds and types of dogs may be aggressive toward people.
Aggression is an individual trait that varies from dog to dog, and has a lot to do with a dogâs environment and owners. Aggressive behaviors are common and normal in dogs of all breeds and types. Pit bulls do not exhibit any aggressive behaviors that are unique or extreme when compared to other breeds or types of dogs
 @Antistatism Poppycock!
@Kyle Kesterson I completely agree, pits can be very loyal and loving just like any dog. BUT, they could potentially kill me unlike my beagle or boston terrier. Any dog can bite, very, very few could kill me. This story doesn't sound like the sensational story of a mistreated pit. Sorry man, pits are an unnecessary breed.
 @Kyle Kesterson Yea yea yea
Suggest the home life of the Pit be looked into - just guessing, but highly likely the owner did everything he could to accentuate the aggressiveness in this dog.
Ban them, all of them. Remove them from society now.
 @Mark Overreact much?
 @fyrefawx  @Mark This could have been a child Fyrefawx, would it be over reacting then? A dog can be a huge part of a family, and to lose it because of an uncontrolled dog that slipped his leash is unacceptable. There's nature and nurture, but you can't control nature, you can't predict when nature will come out. These dogs can be sweet, loving, and amazing i'm sure. But inside is a natural instinct that you can not predict. Some animals whether they're similar or not are not meant to be kept as pets.Â
All the time and NOT enough when I hear of another attack of these mutilating, killing machines. How many more times do we need to read about these so called cute lovable dogs killing some thing or some one? Oh and it's always the irresponsible owners fault, right! It's the freakin dog that doing the killing! Get rid of em every last one from our society. If some one has to have one of these viscious beasts then put em in a cage like the wild animals they are. They are bread to kill! They don't belong on the streets!!!!!
Myth: Pit bulls are unpredictable; they can turn on anyone, even their owner, at any time.
FACT: Pit bulls are no more or less unpredictable than any other type of dog. Often, a person who claims that a dog is âunpredictableâ simply doesnât understand dog behavior. In the overwhelming majority of dog bite cases, the humans involved donât understand or have missed canine warning signs preceding the bite. For more information on dog behavior and aggression, check out âThe Culture Clashâ by Jean Donaldson.
The way our legal system handles dog bites only strengthens the myth that dogs are unpredictable. In the case of a dog bite, a dog owner that admits prior knowledge of their dogâs dangerous behavior will be more severely punished than a dog owner who claims to be ignorant of the danger. For this reason, after a dog bite happens, you will hear the dog owner say âMy dog was nice before this! I didnât expect this to happen.â It sounds like the dog unexpectedly snapped, but in reality, the dog owner is trying to reduce their punishment by claiming ignorance.
@fyrefawx @Mark - Every single pitbull I have ever come across has been out of control mean. You have to ask yourself, why is it that the dog fights only fight pitbulls? Because pitbulls kill. They lock on and you can't unlock them. My husband got in the middle of a fight between a pitbull and a puppy. He was able to pull it off but barely. Those dogs are bred to fight and kill. That is their sole purpose. I say ban them all. Forever.
I hope you have good insurance if you own a pitbull.
 @fyrefawx  @Mark Funny thing about pits tho, provocation can be a mere blink of an eye.
"Fail" You are lying to your self. I'm not buying it and neither are most people. You should not resort to name calling in your arrogance it confirms to all who read this that those who justify these animals that kill are just as evil as the dogs are.
 @Mark Just as long as the media keeps printing them because they love to inflame idiots like YOU.  Pit Bulls are now being treated to the exact same discrimination as German Shepherds, Dobermans, Boxers and some others. Are you ignorant enough to believe those dogs aren't still attacking when "unprovoked?"  They just have fallen out of fashion for the most part as the dog idiots love to hate.  Look to the owners, look to the continuous inbreeding, non-socialization and brutalizing done to Pits for very specific reasons. Â
Â
Stop blaming the dogs. Start getting up in arms about dog fighting for starters. These dogs have to be FORCED to fight.
Â
Sure they're "animals," Â so are you, so am I. They are NOT, however, born cold-blooded killers looking for something to rip apart.
Okay, the thing was on a leash. Can't we pass a law that if these things are walking around they MUST be muzzled? It would at least be SOMETHING......
 @Beau's Mom The owner for some odd reason had unleashed the dog.  I have a tiny suspicion there is more to this story than what we just read.
 @fyrefawx  @Beau's Mom TD (nuf said)
.............impressive .
@fyrefawx @Beau's Mom Slipped leash/collar not unleashed. Read much?
@Beau's Mom This was directed at fyrefawx, not you. By your comment it's clear you understand the story. When I posted it automatically point to the both of you.
I meant that it WAS on a leash at the begining...not running by itself. Yes, as a matter of fact, I read all the time. You?
