KENT, Wash. -- A King County Sheriff’s K-9 deputy was startled Thursday night when a vandal tossed a large rock smashed onto his windshield as he was driving his patrol car near Kent.

The deputy was in the 13800 block of SE 272nd St. around 10:20 p.m. when a rock struck the hood of his car, then smashed into the driver's side of the windshield.

The deputy was sprayed with glass but was not injured.

Deputies didn't find anyone at the scene, but did see a series of other rocks that appeared to be staged on the side of the road, ready to throw, investigators said.

"We are thankful that our deputy was not hurt in this case," King County Sheriff Steve Strachan said in a statement released to the media. "This kind of vandalism poses a serious risk to drivers and could have ended with a serious injury.

Kent Police officials said that a similar incident had occurred to another person in the same general area and that person saw three boys run from the scene.

Deputies ask if you have any information to call the King County Sheriff’s Office at (206) 296-3311.
