Vandals attack beloved wood carvings in Sedro-Woolley

SEDRO-WOOLLEY, Wash. -- Vandals have attacked one of the public art pieces that attract visitors to the town of Sedro-Woolley.
Somebody pushed over the eagle carving Sunday night, breaking off its beak, and breaking the heart of the woman whose brings them here.
"This whole feathered side has been scarred because that's were he hit the pavement," said Jeanne McLennan. "I was upset; I started crying."
McLennan runs the community's annual Logger Rodeo Festival, where wood carvers from all over the country compete, then sell or donate their work.
And local artist Nyal Thomas is responsible for repairing the abuse vandals inflict on these cedar creations.
"It breaks our hearts when we work as hard as we do and somebody comes along just because they feel like it or push it down on the street," Thomas said.
The eagle sculpture isn't one Thomas carved, but he'll soon start making its replacement beak.
He's spent more than a decade fixing what police describe as an ongoing rash of vandalism that has cost the community tens-of-thousands of dollars.
"Sometimes the pieces are gone, like on time they took the whole head, so I had to carve a new head," Thomas said.
But something good happened this time -- a security camera on the clock tower recorded the crime, .and people have identified the suspect.
"There are witnesses that watched the person do it, thank goodness," Thomas said.
An arrest is imminent, and the town hopes it serves as a deterrent and will encourage everybody who lives and works in Sedro-Woolley to help protect the carvings.

The perp needs to pay for the original cost AND the cost of the replacement. If they are on the government dole then they get nothing further till this is paid off. Yes this is extreme but, till people are held fully responsible for their actions society cannot move forward to a better tomorrow.
I happen to live in Sedro Woolley. These are some beautiful carvings that they're destroying. There are no night businesses there except for the bars. The streets are otherwise empty at night. I live a mile from the "downtown" area and even on a busy road here...I often come out to find our waste containers kicked into the street, or our mailboxes torn right off their posts. Just vandals walking by in the middle of the night with nothing better to do than destroy something. It's pretty sad that law enforcement doesn't express a greater presence. If I catch them....it's going to make the news.
Once again, I ask "why?"
@Zoso because they were bord and realy do not care and have not had to face any consiquances for thier actions. They will get a light slap on the wrist and be back to doing this again in the next week. This is what we have to face in this society today.
@bustedupredneck Yeah that's right. Now that's when I usually ask how bored do you have to be? I just don't understand what gets into these people!
These people are horrible and should be punished and made known publicly who they are.  I do question though if you are having these thing that keep getting vandalized and cost a lot of money to repair why continue to make the available?  If you have the money to repair them and no other programs are going without great but it not maybe reevaluate fixing them or having them at all.  Art is great I love it but in these time if your budget is hurting art should be the last thing money should be spent on.
 @apenny4mythoughts:Â
So we should all just "surrender" to these worthless jerks, quit trying to enjoy art in publicc? According to the story, tghere is a loggers festival every year, and a LARGE part of that is the carving contests & selling the carvings. Using your thinking, it would be like ssayoing that since the EMP or the Aquarium gets vandalized over & over, we should simply get rid of them. That is letting these punks win.
Â
And it is NOT just places & things like this. People are stealing everything that is not nailed down, even things that they would not even get $5 for if they tried to sell it. I had someoine steal the cover from my BBQ - they could have bought it nbrand new at Wal*Mart for less than $3! Will I quit having my BBQ out & covered? No, as I happen to enjoy BBQ'g. I also had a garden sculture stolen that my son gave me for Mother's Day. Will I take down all my garden decorations? No - I enjoy them.
Â
We ALL need to fight back, to NOT give in & let them win.
What is wrong with people?! Â This is why no one can have nice things - always some punk who tries to ruin it.
Some people will do anything for attention. Even risk going to jail. What a waste. I wish I could get a refund having to share oxygen with this loser.
humiliation - not what I posted before.  Can't type this morning...
Glad they caught the perp on camera this time - like others have said, I think public humialiation would be the best sentence. What a loser with a capital L.
Vandalism is not like any other type of crime. There is no monetary gain to be had; it is just an act of sheer meanness.
Â
I think we should require mental health evaluations as a part of the punishment of anyone convicted of this crime. You really have to be a defective human on a very fundamental level to get your jollies from destroying stuff.
@Petwlkr Do you realize the sheer cost of all that? The occupy crowd alone would be in the millions :)
I think this is a unique time to bring back the stocks. Put the cretin in stocks next to the statue for a full day, from sunup to sundown with no "potty break" and let him (or her) suffer the public scorn and humiliation so richly deserved.
@Glassman I totally agree with that. Maybe some public humiliation would turn some lives around.
@Melissa Angevine:Â
Â
Unfortunately, it would probably have the exact opposite effect - they will believe they are being persecuted & then take more action againsst those they feel responsible for their public humiliation & persecution.
Â
I would bet dollars tpo doniuts that the suspect is mid teens to early 20's, male, most likely white. He has been raised to believe he is "entitled", that he is in no way responsible for anything he does, that there are no consequences he would ever have to face, that he has always been excused & baiuled out of previous bad behavior.Â
Â
We seem to have a whole generation of people that meet this description.
It's just so disrespectful!! What is wrong with people who think this is something fun to do? Somebody took the time, and had the talent, to create something beautiful and what's your contribution? Knock it over. Yeah, that's really big of you.
If someone watched it happen, why didn't they stop them? It doesn't take a lot to scare the cowards that do this crap off.
If it's a local they should shame them publicly in front of city hall, along with the punk who made threats to shoot up a school......
What's in the water in Woolley, anyway????
dirtbags
losers
crackheads
dopers
freaks
too many running free in the world
outta be a law against that
