Victim dies from shooting in SoDo; homicide probe launched
SEATTLE - Police have launched a homicide investigation after a 25-year-old man who was shot during a melee early Sunday outside a SoDo nightclub died from his injuries.
Two other people were injured during the brawl, which broke out at about 1:45 a.m. as bars were closing.
Police responded to the scene, in the 2900 block of 1st Avenue South, after receiving 911 calls about a fight disturbance and gunfire.
When officers arrived, they found a highly chaotic scene with an uncooperative crowd who would provide little help or information, said Detective Jeff Kappel of the Seattle police.
Police and medics identified three male victims. The most seriously injured suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen. He was rushed to Harborview Medical Center and died from his injuries later Sunday, Kappel said.
The two other victims, both men in their 20s, sustained cuts and bruises to the head from being assaulted, but no gunshot wounds.
One of them was taken to Harborview with non-life-threatening injuries. The other was treated and released at the scene.
A preliminary investigation found that a brawl broke out as a crowd of people left the nearby Republiq nightclub and walked to their cars at closing time. The fighting escalated into gunfire.
The victims and others in the crowd refused to provide much information, and no suspects were arrested. No information about the suspects is currently available, police said.
Homicide detectives have now assumed responsibility for the active and on-going investigation, Kappel said.
Anyone with information about this incident or who may know the identities or whereabouts of suspects is asked to call 911 or the Seattle Police Homicide Tip Line at (206) 233-5000. Anonymous tips are welcome.
