WSP: Cell phone full of child porn turns up on local freeway

MARYSVILLE, Wash. -- A lost cell phone that turned up on a King County freeway helped Washington State Patrol detectives arrest a Stanwood man for possession of child pornography.

A resident first spotted the phone on the freeway sometime last week. Wanting to return it to its rightful owner, the resident began looking through phone for a name.

Instead, troopers say the man found a large cache of photos showing young girls being sexually abused. The resident immediately contacted WSP and handed over the phone.

Detectives got a search warrant for the phone and found the child pornography. They then called its owner, 59-year-old Patrick A. Sheely, and arranged a time to return the phone.

Instead of giving him the phone, troopers arrested Sheely and booked him into Snohomish County Jail on suspicion of possessing child pornography.

A further search of Sheely's Stanwood home turned up tens of thousands more illegal images and videos, according to WSP.

A judge on Monday set Sheely's bail at $250,000. The investigation is ongoing and Sheely will likely face more charges.
