WSP: Suspected drunk driver hits bicyclist while texting

BONNEY LAKE, Wash. - A pickup driver is facing vehicular assault charges after he drifted off the roadway while texting and hit a bicyclist who was riding on the shoulder, the Washington State Patrol reports.

Alcohol also is believed to be a factor in the crash, the State Patrol said.

State troopers responded to the scene, on Highway 410 near 166th Avenue East, just after 10 p.m. Thursday, after receiving a report of a truck hitting a bicycle.

The bicyclist, a 53-year-old Bonney Lake man, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of injuries. His condition was not immediately available.

A preliminary investigation found that the pickup driver, a 23-year-old Lake Tapps man, was heading east on Highway 410 just east of 166th Avenue when he drifted onto the shoulder in a 1997 Chevy S10 pickup and slammed into the bicyclist.

A State Patrol report said alcohol and texting were both factors in the crash. The pickup driver was booked into Pierce County Jail for investigation of vehicular assault.
