Washington groups forge compact for immigration reform
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - Washington joined a handful of other states with a compact in support of immigration reform Tuesday, marking another effort by states to push Congress to overhaul U.S. immigration policies.
The compact, signed by a coalition of more than 40 agriculture, business and faith entities, calls for sensible policies that meet the needs of Washington residents and create a fair path to legal status for illegal immigrants.
The compact includes five principles for keeping families together, ensuring a strong economy and focusing local law enforcement efforts on criminal activities, rather than civil violations of federal code, such as immigration violations.
Similar compacts have been created in Arizona, Texas, Iowa, Colorado and Utah.
Much like those states, though, the Washington state compact offered scant details about what should be included in reform legislation.
The purpose of the compact is not to get into the details of immigration reform, but to promote the values that are essential in resolving the issue and give Congress a push, said former congressman Sid Morrison, a Republican who represented Washington's 4th District from 1980-1992.
The district includes the heavily agricultural Yakima Valley and the larger Columbia River Basin, where thousands of immigrants labor in farm fields, fruit warehouses and vegetable processing plants.
"Being a lifelong part of this valley, I know that they reflect the values of many of the folks who have come here, with good intent, lived the American dream, better themselves, feed their families, and yet were illegal."
Supporters of the compact include the Washington Association of Business, the Washington Growers League and the King County sheriff.
Resolving the issue is the federal government's responsibility, but the compact offers a set of principles that members of Congress should consider as they debate any legislation, said Mike Gempler, executive director of the Washington Growers League.
Making it harder for people to immigrate illegally - and easier for people to immigrate legally - will go a long way toward fixing the problem, he said.
But any solution, he said, must include provisions that protect the U.S. and Washington state economies, whether the issue is the general size of the workforce or the need for seasonal workers for agriculture.
"Any bill that is passed into law must consider what kind of workforce is needed for our economy for the future, and how we will achieve it," he said.
Marisol Guerrero, 36, traveled from Sunnyside to Yakima for the announcement with her two children, 7-year-old Ashley and 4-year-old Bryan.
"It's important for me to see reform, so that students can achieve their dreams," she said. "I'm a single mom and I'm the only one who is going to support my kids when they need me."
While in Congress, Morrison co-authored legislation to reform U.S. immigration policies 27 years ago. That bill passed the House, but failed in the Senate.
Morrison said he believes immigration issues could have been resolved then. He now serves on the boards of Central Washington University and Energy Northwest, the public-power consortium that operates the Northwest's only commercial nuclear reactor.
Washington state hires more college graduates than any other state, but graduates fewer of its own citizens, he said.
"We're kidding ourselves by not looking at the resource we have here in people," Morrison said.
Ridding these people of the "illegal cloud" enables them to be trained as documented workers, he said, adding, "These are some of the best workers in the world, no matter what they pursue."

ASIA FOR THE ASIANS, AFRICA FOR THE AFRICANS, WHITE COUNTRIES FOR EVERYBODY!
Everybody says there is this RACE problem. Everybody says this RACE problem will be solved when the third world pours into EVERY white country and ONLY into white countries.
The Netherlands and Belgium are just as crowded as Japan or Taiwan, but nobody says Japan or Taiwan will solve this RACE problem by bringing in millions of third worlders and quote assimilating unquote with them.
Everybody says the final solution to this RACE problem is for EVERY white country and ONLY white countries to âassimilate,â i.e., intermarry, with all those non-whites.
What if I said there was this RACE problem and this RACE problem would be solved only if hundreds of millions of non-blacks were brought into EVERY black country and ONLY into black countries?
How long would it take anyone to realize Iâm not talking about a RACE problem. I am talking about the final solution to the BLACK problem?
And how long would it take any sane black man to notice this and what kind of psycho black man wouldnât object to this?
But if I tell that obvious truth about the ongoing program of genocide against my race, the white race, Liberals and respectable conservatives agree that I am a naziwhowantstokillsixmillionjews.
They say they are anti-racist. What they are is anti-white.
Anti-racist is a code word for anti-white.

The compact, signed by a coalition of more than 40 agriculture, business...entities", Hey there Fox viewers, aren't we supposed to trust our business owners? Don't they have our best interests at heart? Wouldn't they run things better?
"create a fair path to legal status for illegal immigrants.", we already have a fair legal path. Illegal is illegal, it really is not very hard.
There are so many lessons in history that teach us this is a BAD idea. Allowing criminal immigrants to become legal citizens with a wave of the hand is not smart and will lead to a lot of trouble in the near future. Illegal immigration already causes many issues in our country, opening the floodgates will lead us down a path we may never recover from.
So, let me get this straight, the left takes issue with big, bad corporations moving jobs overseas because the cost of doing business in, say, China is far cheaper than Seattle, but they are OK with importing low wage workers here?!? I don't see the difference! I guess that makes sense, if you subscribe to the "do as I say, not as I do" attitude!
@Bianca I'm a "leftie", as you put it, and I absolutely am not OK with illegal aliens of any stripe getting a free pass.Â
How's that broad brush working out for you?
@Glassman @Bianca --- It's working out pretty darn well, thank you very much. Now, don't tell me the left isn't all for open boards, open paychecks, because they are, just ask'em. But God forbid if Walmart or some other large corporation wants to move its manufacturing overseas, the left has a fit! You know it, so don't try to pretend otherwise.
It sounds like a coalition of corporate and large farmers that want to continue running small family farms out of business. Yes, with the help of low cost illegal labor. How about breaking up huge farms and selling the parcels to family farmers, if that farm hires illegal workers?
"The compact, signed by a coalition of more than 40 agriculture, business and faith entities, calls for sensible policies that meet the needs of Washington residents and create a fair path to legal status for illegal immigrants".
SURE ! Just let them all in. Of Course the coalition wants a sensible policy to keep all of these $6-$8 an hour immigrants working for them. We let way to many of them into our Country right now and half of their illegal family member find their way up her to work also.Â
So are we just trying to find out how many people this country will hold or what??
Reverend Hutchison made a great point this morning, if we legalize all these people will they still accept the illegal wages that farmers are paying them? NO, of course not.
We were swindled in 1986 with the Simpson-Mazzoli act, now we have to draw the line and fully secure the border, 100%, BEFORE we do anything else.Â
Deport all alien invaders now.
We already allow over 1,000,000 people each year to immigrate here legally. Nearly all of them are unskilled and from the poorest places on Earth. How many more can we support?Â
I love how everyone brings up the price of vegetables, etc..., when talking about illegals. The numbers don't add up. Since they breed like rabbits, it's humanly impossible for fruit pickers to pay to raise their own children. Any contributions to the tax base are minimal compared to the gov't expenditures for education, healthcare, incarceration, etc...Â
There should be a moratorium on legal immigration to start with, until we can get our house in order. Legal immigrants are already a huge burden on our economy. There shouldn't even be a discussion about illegals, when we can't handle the number of legal immigrants to start with. .Â
Employ returning military along the border, bury claymores, and E-verify every worker regardless of occupation, charge Mexico for jail time and transport back. Deny legalization if caught here illegal one time.
I know people who have waited for years to enter this country legally. People who broke our nation's laws, to sneak in, should be required to get in line, just like everybody else. Â Of course this would make it harder for the Democrats to add new voters to their ranks. Â Â
@Geronimo JonesMy wife entered LEGALLY and  EARNED her citizenship. She votes every time a ballot comes. Funny thing: She's a Republican.Â
You did OK until you showed your political bias. It is NOT political. It affects EVERY LEGAL citizen alike.
Illegals have already gone further into taking jobs from Americans, and Veterans. Â The illegals have under cut wages in construction ,painting contractors and workers. In the 1950's 13 million were rounded up and deported so veterans and others Americans could find work, producing the Greatest generation this country has ever had.Â
@Glassman
In your wisdom, I guess calling you a blogger is equivalent to calling you a racist and bias. Undocumented workers are needed and when you or your children are courageous enough to apply for work on the farms of Wenatchee and are denied because of the color of your skin or your US born status, then come back and complain. Until, either grow your own vegetables at home or learn to appreciate the amazing economic value of the undocumented workers who certaintly do a lot more than the unemployed and welfare receipients or permanent students who just wait for their checks at home and get their exercize from blogging against these amazing workers.
@Socialjusticeforall I am a US citizen of Northern European descent and I have picked berries, been a housekeeper in a hotel and am a US military veteran. We do not need or want illegal aliens here. Legal immigrants are great, they want to be here and will assimilate into their new country, illegal aliens are foreign nationals who have invaded our country, have no intention of becoming citizens or assimilating into our country and are stealing college seats that should only be used for legal foreign student and US citizens. Illegal aliens also steal monies from social programs that should ONLY assist US citizens like elder poor, disabled, and families that have hit a low point. Illegal aliens, along with all of their children, need to be deported back to their countries of origin. The end.
@SocialjusticeforallÂ
So, I guess you don't mind exploiting undocumented workers if it helps you get cheap vegetables. If undocumented workers want to become legal citizens, they should apply for legal status and then get in line just like all other legal immigrants to this country.
@Socialjusticeforall - - everyone has a right to their opinion(s) I was born, raised and spent the majority of my life in Washinton State (Western) but had mega relatives in Easthern WA! I now live in AZ so 'face' other Illegal Alien problems - IMO it is 'sad' that the majority of Welfare, etc., recipients don't want to 'dirty their hands' with work 'in the fields' and/or 'housekeeping' type jobs - - SO MUCH REFORM is needed!
@Socialjusticeforall - P.S. - "Calling an illegal alien an "Undocumented Immigrant" is the same as calling a drug pusher an "Unlicensed Pharmacist"." Grown weary of all the PC 'junk'!! Illegal is ILLEGAL!. - - my Grandparents, both sides of my family, migrated - the LEGAL way - - IMO the illigal immigrants today are a 'stab in the heart' to my heritage!
"Making it harder for people to immigrate illegally - and easier for people to immigrate legally - will go a long way toward fixing the problem, he said."
Uh, exactly why hasn't the first part been done yet? And we have no guarantee that it would happen in the future.
Here's the Mylon Fix:
1) Mandatory E-Verify for all new hires, starting within 90 days of enactment by Congress
2) Â Mandatory E-Verify for ALL workers starting next year on a staggered State-by-State basis, starting with Northern States and then at intervals to the Mexican border.
3) Work visas that are valid for SIX MONTHS only and renewable after a six month interval. Will be issued at exit points along the Mexican Border and say, LA, Miami and NY. Must re-enter US with proper identification documents, be fingerprinted and issued photo ID along with TPI number.
4) Amnesty for all exiting Foreign Nationals (time limited offer). No in-country amnesty. Ever. And make sure the people understand that.
"meet the needs of Washington residents and create a fair path to legal status for illegal immigrants."
So a path for illegal immigrants to stay here is fair? To who? If I rob a bank, which is illegal, can I have a clear path to exoneration?
Illegal is illegal and needs to be treated as such. Put all illegals on a bus or plane and send them back to where they are LEGAL!
Remember: Calling an illegal alien an "Undocumented Immigrant" is the same as calling a drug pusher an "Unlicensed Pharmacist".
Send 'em all back, make 'em learn English and let 'em wait in line like everyone else.
Of course the agro mob is backing immigration reform. They want to keep their cheep labor and nothing else. Immigration reform, sure, send all of them back across the border and let them wait in line like all the rest are doing rather than allowing a bunch of fence jumpers a free ride to citizenship. Didn't we do something like this a few years back??? And it was suppose to be the end of illegals???? This is nothing but the same old rehash as they stuffed down our throats before.
What a joke. There is and has been a way for people to become legal citizens. Why should my tax dollars go to "help" those who come into this country illegally. In the majority of the world you cross a boarder illegally you are either shot or imprisoned. No wonder the US has become a joke. Illegal immigrants deserve no rights in this country. They are a blight on our society.
Want to be American then come in the LEGAL way. Here is a novel idea, if Mexico is so bad how about fixing your own country instead of bringing your problems here.
@seattleemtMaybe that will be good for all of us if all the Asians and Hispanics leave this country and start building their own countries because U.S.A. is now going down-hill; Â some people I know from 3rd world country actually sold all the property they had and left their country & values to survive here as a second class citizen but having the emotions for this country more than the original citizens of this country! Â I call them 'lickers'. Â These people are putting their money, hard work, dedication, & faith on this country. Â They are the ones (generally speaking) who do not react even when they are abused or taken advantage of; Â they keep smiling and licking. Â If this country kicks them out from here - they will finally come to their senses that they are crows and will remain crows and NEVER become peacocks! Â Not to mention, once they are gone, may be the "Real Americans" will get up from their warm couch and start working hard and studying seriously!
These illegal aliens have no clue what it is to be an American. All they want is what America can offer them.
There has been a "fair path" for immigrants since this country BECAME one. Most of our ancestors took that path, worked, learned the language, and were PROUD to become Americans. The ones that want to become Americans now, just want the free ride, the meal ticket, and they want it HANDED to them. Do it right, or stay home.
@Takamine Amen to that - - was born, raised and lived most my life in WA state - I'm now in AZ - - 'bout an hour from the border - - try adding 'drug cartels' to the 'Ea Wa Agro-business' problems!
@Takamine Well said.
