EDMONDS, Wash. -- A wild, high-speed chase ended early Wednesday morning after a suspected car thief crashed and rolled right in front of Swedish Edmonds Hospital.

The driver stole a Lexus SUV in Seattle and a Lynnwood police officer spotted the vehicle at 196th Street SW and Highway 99, said Shannon Sessions with Lynnwood Police.

The officer attempted to pull the car over, but the driver instead sped off south on Highway 99.

The chase went along Highway 99 for a while until the driver turned down a road that dead ends into Swedish Edmonds Hospital, crashed into a tree and rolled the SUV over.

"Looked outside, car was rolled over," said witness Kevin Dunphy. "About eight to nine cop cars come rolling up; five seconds later they had their guns drawn, told him, 'if you move we're going to shoot you.' "

The driver was trapped in the mangled wreckage for about 20 minutes and then was taken to the trauma center at Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. There is no word on his exact condition, but his injuries were reportedly quite serious.

The man has not been identified.
