SNOQUALMIE PASS, Wash. -- Those planning on crossing the Cascade passes Friday should prepare for a challenging drive as heavy snow is on the way.

As a potent storm drops into the Northwest Friday from the Gulf of Alaska, a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from Friday morning through Saturday morning for all Cascade passes.

Snow will develop Friday morning, and become heavy at times Friday afternoon -- even at Snoqualmie Pass -- where snowfall rates are expected to reach as high as 1 inch per hour.

Overall snow totals are forecast to range between 12-18 inches by Saturday morning, with maybe 2 feet of snow around Mt. Rainier.

Snow will taper off as Saturday morning progresses.
