Woman arrested in mugging of 89-year-old great grandmother

Woman arrested in mugging of 89-year-old great grandmother

PORTLAND, Ore. – Police arrested a 33-year-old woman Tuesday in connection with the thefts of stolen purses from an 89-year-old woman and another woman who is 90 years old.

Police say they arrested Tiffany Denise Smith on an unrelated warrant from Clackamas County.

Marge, 89, was one of the victims. She received significant bruising and cuts on her left eye and knees after she refused to give up her purse and was dragged along the pavement by the suspect on Tuesday, Jan. 7.

Marge spent the night in the hospital but didn’t suffer any broken bones. She had just returned to her Southeast Portland home from her neighborhood Fred Meyer when she was attacked.

When first interviewed by KATU News, Marge showed she's a fighter and had a message for the thieves.

"Come back here I'll use a baseball bat on ya. Or I'll use a cane I got over there with a steel head on it. ... You should be ashamed of yourself for what you've done to me and what you do to other people," she said at the time.

On Tuesday Marge didn't feel any different.

I would like to hang her up like a pinata and then let me at her," she said.

When a KATU producer showed Marge Smith's mug shot, she said it was the woman who attacked her.

Marge is doing well and plans to be at the trial to testify if at all possible.

Police say another woman, who is 90 years old, also had her purse stolen by Smith. That incident happened last month in the 4800 block of Southeast Henderson Street. The suspect knocked on the door and pushed past the woman when she answered the door, stole her purse from the dining room table and fled.

Smith faces charges of robbery, assault, burglary and identity theft.

She has been arrested several times before for ID theft, attempted prostitution and a number of probation violations.

Last September an on-duty Oregon State Police detective resigned after he was allegedly caught having sex with Smith in some bushes.

Richard Narvaez was cited and released for patronizing a prostitute and public indecency.
