Woman found dead in ditch near Navy submarine base

BANGOR, Wash. - A woman whose body was found Thursday morning in a ditch next to the Naval Base Kitsap at Bangor appears to have died when she fell and struck her head, the Kitsap County coroner said Thursday.

A county worker performing maintenance in the area found the body at about 7:25 a.m. and called 911.

Kitsap County Sheriff's Office spokesman Scott Wilson said the woman's body was found face down in the drainage ditch on the west side of Clear Creek Road, a short distance from the sprawling Navy base's old main gate, about a quarter-mile north of Mountain View Road.

Detectives responded to the scene, and Clear Creek Road was closed for a while during the investigation.

The medical examiner identified the woman as 57-year-old Pamela L. McNeil of Silverdale.
