BELLEVUE, Wash. -- A woman was killed in a head-on crash with a semi truck on SR-520 that troopers think might have been alcohol related.

State patrol troopers got a report of the crash just before 4 a.m., said department spokeswoman Julie Startup.

A woman had for some reason stopped her car in the left westbound lane of SR-520 just east of I-405 with no lights on, Startup said. Moments later, the woman was struck by a Cedar Grove compost truck, spinning the woman's car around to where it was facing east.

As the compost truck stopped to exchange information, the woman drove off -- now going east in the westbound lanes, and still with no lights on, Startup said.

The woman's car was then struck head-on by a double-trailer dump truck which was going at freeway speeds. The woman was likely killed instantly.

Startup said alcohol appears to have been a factor.

The crash and ensuing investigation forced the closure of the westbound lanes for several hours, reopening just after 9 a.m. but long after the peak of the commute. Startup said the crash scene extended over a quarter mile and 50 gallons of diesel had spilled.

The woman has not been identified.
