Woman on bike hit by transit bus near Poulsbo

POULSBO, Wash. - A woman on a bicycle was struck by a Kitsap Transit bus and critically injured Wednesday morning near Poulsbo, emergency officials said.

State troopers and medics responded to the scene, Highway 305 just south of the Clearwater Casino, at about 6:30 a.m. after receiving reports of a collision involving a bicycle and another vehicle.

Arriving at the scene, they found a 63-year-old woman with severe injuries who had been struck by a Kitsap Transit bus. She was airlifted to Harborview Medical Center, where she is listed in critical condition.

Highway 305, which is the main route to and from the Bainbridge Island ferry terminal, was closed at the accident scene initially. All lanes have now reopened.

Russ Winger of the Washington State Patrol said it appears the bicyclist was turning onto Highway 305 from Totten Road when she was struck by the bus, which was heading north on the highway. Conditions were foggy at the time.

The driver was the only person on the bus at the time of the crash. A drug recognition expert is evaluating the driver, in accordance with standard procedure.

The exact circumstances leading to the accident are under investigation.
