Gig Harbor woman sentenced to nearly 14 years for hiring hit man

TACOMA, Wash. – A 48-year-old Gig Harbor woman was sentenced to nearly 14 years in prison Friday after hiring a hit man to kill her estranged husband.
Karen E. Lofgren, 48, of Gig Harbor, pleaded guilty to second-degree solicitation to commit murder in Pierce County Superior Court.
According to court documents, Lofgren hired a man to kill her estranged husband early last year. The “hit man” turned out to be a Pierce County sheriff’s detective working undercover.
“Hiring a hit man only works in the movies,” said Prosecutor Mark Lindquist. “All the defendant bought is 14 years in jail.”
The case came to light on Jan. 23, 2012, when Pierce County sheriff’s detectives were contacted by a federal probation officer who reported that an offender under his supervision claimed he was propositioned by Lofgren to help get rid of her husband.
Lofgren, who worked as a nurse at a local hospital, and her husband were going through a contentious divorce, and she told the informant that her problems would all go away if her husband were gone.
She offered the informant $500,000 - half of the $1 million dollar insurance policy - if he arranged to have her husband killed, court documents say.
Detectives set up covert surveillance and recorded several conversations between the defendant and the informant. He told her he had arranged for a hit man to come from out of state. They discussed how the death should look, ultimately agreeing on a “robbery gone bad” scenario, documents say.
On Feb. 21, an undercover detective, posing as the hit man, met with Lofgren. She gave him diamond earrings as a down payment for the murder, a photo of her husband, his physical description, and details of his daily schedule.
Two days later Lofgren was arrested during a traffic stop.

Another crazy nutjob that will be free to grocery shop next to you within 10 years.
Her hair in the photograph is so glossy and luxurious! Â My hair is so dry and brittle. Â
Hahaha, they always end up hiring the undercover agent! Note to would be murder for hire wackos: You wanna shop around, get some estimates and references, and don't always take the lowest bid! It's a trap!
 @Silverback201 lowest bid??? 500K??? wow..........
A good salesperson knows how much he can get... I wonder who won the Sheriff's office pool for the dollar amount the detective could get away with asking for from the suspect.
I'm sure he will still have to pay her in the Divorce this is WA of course.
Wow, a female that is capable of abuse? Â Who would have thunk it? Â Never mind, I'm sure that it's the husband's fault somehow.
 @UtterReality I was very surprised they didn't pin the whole thing on the estranged husband
Dang! Â I've seen people get less time for actually killing someone. Â
So unfortunately the lesson someone may take from this is if you're gonna plan to kill, you'd better get the job done! Â What a statement. Â Sad.
 @Maggie1 You are correct. Many get less time for actually killing the person.
 @Maggie1 I agree. Seems it's worse to plan to kill someone, then to actually kill someone if you look at some of the sentences. And of course, neither is acceptable.
@Thunder tuba man.....
 @watcher  @Thunder My exact example in my mind, yep.
Â
I'm surprised the state didn't blame the man for it all and arrest him.
Harsh. Â Looks like the ex is not only getting the last but the hardiest laugh as well.Â
Stupid girl. Your problems are gone now, for the most part. Hope it was worth it
A greedy little piece of work.
does she get her diamond earrings back?
 @izwideopen Likely they will be auctioned off in a few months.Â
