SEATTLE -- Police are searching for a man who posed as a police officer and sexually assaulted a woman in North Seattle.

Officials said the attack happened late Friday as the woman was walking in the 1100 block of North 93rd Street to meet a friend.

The man confronted the 26-year-old victim on a sidewalk at about 11:30 p.m. and identified himself as a plain clothes officer working on a sting.

He asked the woman for identification and when she hesitated the man showed her a badge. Police officials say the man then pushed her into some nearby bushes and sexually assaulted her.

After the attack the man ran off and remains at large.

The victim was taken to Harborview Medical Center to be treated. She told investigators that the attacker was Hispanic, about 5 feet 9 inches tall, 30 to 40 years old, and clean cut with short, dark curly hair. He had a stocky build and spoke without an accent.

Anyone with information is asked to call 911 or the Seattle Police Sexual Assault Unit at 206-684-5575.

Police say if you are approached by someone out of uniform claiming to be a police officer and you have doubts about their legitimacy, you can always request that a uniformed officer respond to the scene or you can call 911.
