Yakima man used false ID for welfare benefits
YAKIMA, Wash. (AP) - A Yakima man who used a dead Texas man's identity to collect welfare benefits pleaded guilty in federal court to theft and identity theft and was sentenced to nearly four years in prison.
The state Department of Social and Health Services says 54-year-old Guillermo Diaz Cardenas also was ordered to pay $50,000 to the state of Washington.
The department says he used a Texas birth certificate and the man's Social Security card to collect financial, food and medical assistance from January 2007 to December 2011.
The case was investigated by state and federal agents. Cardenas pleaded guilty Feb. 6.

I'm sure he's got that 50k in his checking account and will reimburse the state lickity quick.Â
I will bet he is not the only one from Yakima to do this.
Hmmmm.... with a name like that it makes me wonder if this guy a legal US resident or is he here illegally?
@Tattooed_Angel They said he was from Texas and they can't put anything on the internet that isn't true...OY!
@swansong68Â Actually, the deceased man was from Texas... not the identity thief.
Maybe our country wouldn't be in so much debt if someone would take the time to check these people out. Geez, all they would have to do is go to Winco and count all the people that have food stamps.Â
'Yakima man' AKA Â 'thousands in the liberal sanctuary state of Washington'
Seems like a perfect candidate for amnesty according to the Obama administration.
@dg54321 And what did President Bush do in his 8 years on immigration?
We have net zero illegal immigration right now. Bet you didn't know that. Obama has also significantly increased deportations of both illegal immigrants as well as illegal immigrants who have committed secondary crimes from the Bush administration. Â
So again, what have Republicans like Bush done when they were in office? What did Reagan do? Oh right, amnesty.
@lakeview @dg54321 Three wrongs don't make a right.Â
@lakeview @dg54321 Reagan's folly on amnesty illustrates precisely why amnesty does not work.Â
No in-country amnesty. All illegals should be granted amnesty after seven years once they leave. Please register at the San Diego crossing on your way out.
@dg54321Â A Dreamer
If he wants to have the taxpayers fund his existence, he can do it from inside a prison cell.

El gobierno no va a ser reembolsados ââpor este cabrón.
In our technology age, we live in, it takes almost 5 years to figure out that someone is using a dead mans identity to collect money from the government? I wonder why our country is in the financial mess it is in.
@aintno1special When I applied for food-stamps, they didn't check anything I gave them. I was actually kind of offended by that (they told me it was because there was plenty of money for food-stamps from the federal government, and they had so many applications in that it would take too long to check everything everyone gave them). I did an application online, and an interview in the office where they asked questions, and then they handed me a card. They didn't even ask for a bank statement, just that I tell them how much was in my bank account. An interesting change from back in 2004-2005 when my ex and I got on food-stamps and were subjected to every document we submitted being scrutinized, and we had to have forms from our landlord and employers as well.
@spacegoddess I think there is a fine line between making it too accessible, and too difficult to obtain. Sounds to me like they, like most, don't like paperwork (even though it is them that create and require the "red tape). Honestly it is pretty scary that they made it so easy for you to get the card.(even though you had all the documentation I am sure)...I look at it as they are just giving the cards and when the dust settles they press charges, like in this story....which will cost how much in legal fees?
@aintno1special @spacegoddess I definitely had all the documents. I had to put them in front of the lady to be sure she at least saw that. I think you're right that they basically just throw the cards at people who ask for them and then demand payback and/or press charges when they finally get a clue. I've heard of too many similar stories regarding various state and even federal benefits.
I hate to tell you "pro illegal alien" types but "we told you so".
@scared_citizen I also wonder how many of these DEAD PEOPLE voted in the last election?
So folks are using false or forged documents to tap into welfare and the like?
No, I don't believe you.Â
What next? Women applying for benefits with a gaggle of kids at DSHS while their shacked up boyfriends sit in the dented, primer/green '94 Honda Civic with the pipes, idling the car and listening either to "The ROOOOCK" or "La Grande" on the radio?
@Getov Mylon Hey, don't bust on The Rock! I happen to love The Men's Room.
@Tattooed_Angel @Getov Mylon  Mylon loves the "Men's Room" as well as, "BJ Shea."
I just thought my post would have taken a different tone if I just mentioned "La Gran D," Â (Radio Latino!)
