Self-named 'toughest sheriff in America' falls victim to crime

PHOENIX (AP) - The self-proclaimed "toughest sheriff in America" has apparently been the victim of credit card fraud.
Maricopa County authorities in Phoenix say Sheriff Joe Arpaio's credit card information was stolen and used to make a $291 transaction at a Chicago grocery store last weekend.
Arpaio says he hasn't been to Chicago since 1957 and that Discover Card representatives alerted him to possible fraudulent activity.
It's unclear how the thief or thieves obtained the card number.
Arpaio says his card has been canceled to prevent any further fraudulent use as authorities try to figure out what happened.

Couldn't have happened to a more deserving person.
I was expecting to read he'd been mugged or something similar, given the rather mocking title. What's the pic supposed to suggest, he's a scared old man?Â
I had someone use my Discover card number to spend over $1800 at Best Buy, Bed Bath & Beyond.....they blocked the charges luckily. Â Didn't even post to my account. Â That was SOME data breach.
I am surprised Anonymous has not targeted him.
I am an ID theft victim and should have sympathy. BUT this is Joe Arpaio, one of the most ego-centric, self-serving, pompous-ass, hypocritical right wing nut jobs in the country... So I'm going to say "Karma's a B*tch" And LAUGH OUT LOUD!
@EMDF9A Rejoicing over someone else's bad fortune--doesn't that bounce bad karma right back onto you?
@NorthEnd Perhaps it does. But.. I have nothing but detest for Joe Arpaio, so I'll take my chances.
To top it off, the picture suggest a news conference.
@Komo Dragon it IS a news conference, dated last april. they used an old stock photo.
Â
Are you serious, KOMO?
@Melissa Angevine This is an AP story...even more disturbing, it's "national news"!
At least it is this stuff they are reporting... must not be much else going on in the Country... (which is good news)Â
It would be nice if mainstream media would report on the good stuff people do instead of the bad things people do..
@Mr. H Very good point! But "good news" doesn't cause conflict in the chat threads! Maybe next time there is a feel good story we can start a mock conflict? :)
