JERUSALEM (AP) - Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had cosmetic eyelid surgery last week to improve his vision, his office said Monday.

The procedure lasted 40 minutes under local anesthetic, and Olmert was completely conscious throughout, said David Baker, an official in the prime minister's office. He said it was done because Olmert was suffering from slight disturbances to his vision.

But Israeli media quickly speculated that the media-savvy Olmert had the eyelid ''lift'' to improve his appearance. Monday's papers were filled with news of the procedure, coupled with before and after pictures of Olmert.

Olmert is known to be conscious about his image, favoring expensive suits and flashy ties. He jogs and works out regularly. About a decade ago, he had laser eye surgery to remove the spectacles he wore early on in his career. And recently, he cut off his trademark comb-over, emulating the example of his good friend Rudy Giuliani, the former mayor of New York.

Eyelid surgery, called blepharoplasty, is a procedure to remove fat, usually along with excess skin and muscle, from the upper and lower eyelids, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. Eyelid surgery can correct drooping upper lids and puffy bags below the eyes, features that make one look older.
