Authorities: Retired pastor killed both wives

LEBANON, Pa. (AP) — Retired Pennsylvania pastor Arthur "A.B." Schirmer was a serial philanderer, preying on women in his church who were having trouble in their own marriages, court documents say.
Yet adultery might have been the least of his sins.
Charged two years ago in the death of his second wife, Schirmer now stands accused of killing his first wife, too, after a grand jury concluded her injuries weren't consistent with a fall down the stairs, Lebanon County prosecutors announced Friday. He intends to plead innocent, and his children say they support him.
Schirmer, 64, has long claimed he was out for a run on April 23, 1999, when he returned home to find Jewel Schirmer's body in a pool of blood at the bottom of the basement steps. Although she had suffered a fractured skull as well as injuries to her face, body, arms and legs, the coroner made no determination as to whether her death was an accident or a homicide, and the case was closed.
That decision never sat well with her brother.
Jonathan Behney told police two days after his sister's death that "it was his opinion that her head was smashed in by someone," a police affidavit said. "He added that Arthur had been cheating on his sister for some time and has had several extramarital affairs with other women."
Police and prosecutors decided to take another look at Jewel Schirmer's death after her husband of 31 years came under investigation in the 2008 death of his second wife, Betty Jean, in the Pocono Mountains. Prosecutors in that case say Schirmer killed Betty Jean Schirmer, then staged a car accident to cover it up. He faces trial in January.
On Friday, Behney welcomed the decision to charge Schirmer in his 50-year-old sister's death.
"I'd like the truth to come out, not only for my family, but for Betty Jean's family, and for us to get closure," said Behney, joining Lebanon County District Attorney David Arnold at a news conference.
The district attorney said he did not believe the initial 1999 investigation was botched, though he added no probe is completely free of mistakes.
"Looking back today on what they knew at the time, I wouldn't feel comfortable criticizing the people who worked on it. I don't think it would be fair to them," he said. "We have different technologies available now that they didn't have then."
That technology would eventually help them break open the case.
Investigators hired a biomechanical engineering firm to recreate Jewel Schirmer's supposed fall down the stairs. The firm used a test dummy fitted with various instruments to collect data on the forces to which her tumbling body would have been subjected.
"We found the 'crash dummy' evidence to be particularly compelling, as it indicated to us that Jewel could not have suffered all of her injuries by accidentally falling down a flight of stairs," the grand jury wrote.
The grand jury cited medical testimony that revealed Schirmer likely used blunt objects to kill both his wives.
"We find it particularly disturbing and difficult to believe that both of A.B. Schirmer's wives could have suffered such horrific injuries by accident. To the contrary, we believe probable cause exists to believe that neither woman died from an accident," the report said.
Schirmer's attorney, James Swetz, said his client will be vindicated. Swetz's firm also released a statement from the three adult children of A.B. and Jewel Schirmer that said their father is innocent of all charges.
"We are deeply saddened and disappointed by the false accusations and allegations that have been waged against our father," the statement said. "He is a compassionate and gentle man who would never harm anyone."
At least one of Schirmer's former congregants, Kathy Siegrist, said she felt betrayed by the man who'd led her spiritual life for 20 years, so much so that she no longer attends a church.
Siegrist — who called herself Jewel Schirmer's best friend — said she had always considered A.B. Schirmer, who led Bethany United Methodist Church in Lebanon, to be gentle and kind. But there were hints of a darker side, flashes of anger that Siegrist said she never saw but that her then-husband used to talk about.
"The moment this happened, he told me he thinks A.B. killed her," Siegrist said.
Schirmer's former flock at Bethany was shocked and upset two years ago when he was first charged with homicide. Friday's charges come as less of a surprise, said the current pastor, the Rev. Nelson Alleman, who arrived at Bethany in 2010.
Alleman said he plans to speak briefly about it during worship Sunday and will tell the congregation: "We're a people of grace, we're a people of mercy, we're a people of forgiveness, and we also serve a God of justice and we are praying for justice, wherever that may be in this case."

Believe me when I say DEMONS DWELL IN CHURCH GOERS EVEN THOSE WITH HIGH POSITIONS!!! BELIEVE IT!
@reelin21 Demons will dwell in anyone foolish enough to permit them to so do.
Thats what religion will do for you.
@Stryker No, that is what common human depravity will do for you. Unfortunately, this pastor or former pastor never really allowed his faith to constrain his behavior. When people claim faith but do not allow it to change their nature, then you have problems. But the same can be said also for those who claim to be "compassionate" but seek only good for themselves and those "like them".
The religion to beware of is that which glorifies the sort of philandering behavior that this man was trying to hide - and that which tries to set man up as god.
I'm shocked that they found yet another religious figure living life as a total scumbag hypocrite. Just shocked.Â
Will this be a 1 part or 2 part LMN movie?
Yup. Definitely doing the devil's work. Not God's.
 @Zoso Absolutely
I wish I could be on this jury, the dummy that goes down the stairs sounds really interesting. It seems to me that a person can sustain any number of injuries going down a flight of stairs, but apparently this device can prove otherwise.Â
Looks like THIS guy just bought a first class, one way ticket to the gates of Hell. I hope The Devil has something SPECIAL lined up for him.
@LoudNoises "Looks like THIS guy just bought a first class, one way ticket to the gates of Hell. I hope The Devil has something SPECIAL lined up for him."
Â
Well until he dies, his fate isn't sealed to the Lake of Fire, but a true, sincere repentance from his heart is all that will save him. As to the devil, contrary to stories and mythology, he isn't in charge of the Lake of Fire, he will be in the same state as all who go there by their choice.
@Gaikokujin  @LoudNoises I'm aware of the scripture, and the results of sin. Agreed that he still has a chance at repentance, but considering that he was a "man of God" and did this, should put him on the fast track to fiery damnation. "Lord, Lord, did I not prophesy in your name?........" I think THIS guy is one of the ones the Bible mentions. (I believe in an eye for an eye, and just punishment for those who deserve it) I'm not one of those "feel good Christians", I'm a realist Christian. People like this, who do damning things all while "representing" MY God, make it clear to me exactly WHY Christians will be persecuted in the end of days, and why SO many people think that believing in God is a waste of time. In the end.....we will ALL find out who's right, and who's wrong. In the meanwhile, I wish we could all just get along, be happy, and not have to read stories like this on a daily basis.
@LoudNoises Oh and Walid's son Theodore Shoebat has an incredible book also.

@Gaikokujin Thanks! I'll check them out.
@LoudNoises Walid Shoebat is a former Muslim terrorist who has had the scales that were on his eyes removed and has brought out some amazing revelations regarding things that were as the Book of Daniel puts it (paraphrasing) "sealed up to be revealed in the final times." The following is a pretty good teaching he did several years back at a church in Florida, it's in 10 parts though as back then YouTube had time limits on the length of videos.

Joel and Walid combined on the following book, but it is primarily Walid's. It is an outstanding book, completely outstanding. I highly recommend you read it, get it from your local library if they have it. It is worth buying also for it is one you can go back over and over to cross reference with the Bible

@Gaikokujin I am not. Who are they?
Â
@LoudNoises '"Lord, Lord, did I not prophesy in your name?........" I think THIS guy is one of the ones the Bible mentions.'
Â
Well, yes... and probably at least 80% of those generally known as the "Religious Right". Consider Matthew 25 (last half). And don't even get me started on that fellow who's repeating Isaiah 14:12 while running for...
Â
The really really sad thing is how many prominent Christian leaders are being deceived my a new Caesar who thinks he's a god... burning their pinch of incense in the polling booth.
Â
"For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?"
@LoudNoises
Well I am not speaking of judgment through a flood. Speaking of the lawless, heathen every day humanistic living of today that was the same as Noah's day just before the flood. In regards to Revelation, all that is coming in there is also found in the Old Testament books of Jeremiah, Zechariah, Ezekiel, Micah and others. It is in those books that I believe that a true understanding of what is shortly to come is profoundly described also.
Â
On a side note, are you familiar with Joel Richardson or Walid Shoebat?
@Gaikokujin The days of Noah have come and gone. Never again will God flood the earth and have a "do over." What's coming next is BEYOND a great flood. The persecution is starting, but the end result makes it all worth it. I watch, and study the news, and current events every day.......and when you compare them to the last book in the Bible, it's flat out scary. Lawless society, corrupt governments, rampant crime, no morals nor ethics, and wars (and rumors of more)......yea....Revelations is one SCARY bedtime story.
Â
@LoudNoises Agreed and if he does go there there is a special place for him. And as to stories like this, yea I hardly ever watch any tv or cable news programs anymore. The days of Noah are upon us.
United Methodist church is fairly liberal and not all churches in the nationwide organization see eye to eye on the Bilble:. Is there a true or literal hell? Â Is Jesus the only way to Salvation?, Â etc. Â Â I am sure many of the congregation members are true followers of Christ but no all pastors are. Â Â But you can say this about any church and their pastors. Â There is no perfect church and nobody has found one yet. Â It is sad this has happened. Â I wish he was discovered before he killed any of his wives.Â
@HullenbeckCowl Unfortunately, serial adultery is all too common among clergy in many or even most denominations. It likely has to do with the awe and adoration held toward charismatic (in whatever sense) men in leadership roles. And pastors will go to great lengths - do abominable things - to try to hide their own sin.
Â
I've seen this evil arise in a conservative / fundamentalist church where the married youth pastor and father of three caught the senior pastor in the very act of a dalliance with the secretary (apparently not at all his first, either) and then used this knowledge to shield himself from exposure or intervention as he proceeded to seduce a girl just graduated from high school who was a member and leader in his youth group. When other staff saw the signs of the affair and raised a flag, the youth pastor simply went to the senior with a concocted story of "disloyalty" and "church splitting", and the senior was more than happy to persecute these men and try to silence them. When yet another associate pastor stood up regarding sin in the church, the senior man fired him on the spot.
Â
Not precisely murder, but when a "pastor" is willing to stand by and see a young woman dressed for the table of a married staff member in order to cover his own sin - actually running interference when the other is being discovered - you get a sense of how far some "men of god" will go in order not to have their own disqualifying sin revealed.
Â
In another case I became aware of years ago, a very popular pastor in non-mainstream church - with a long career of philandering and already on his second marriage at the time - seduced a high school junior and leader in the national youth organization, and apparently infected her with the HPV that ultimately caused the cancer that killed her as a young mother of 40. Tragic. But he apparently never changed (divorced again) and many from that church still hold him in high regard - the truth having been concealed by many.
Â
"The wages of sin is death."
That's not very holy.
Sheeple just never learn.
13Â Thou shalt not kill.
14Â Thou shalt not commit adultery.
15Â Thou shalt not steal.
16Â Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.
17Â Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
Exodus 20:13-17
Disgusting and sad. Repent now and seek forgiveness for judgment is coming. Prayers of peace that will bring you through this to all those hurt by this man.
