Calif. anti-Islamic filmmaker: I won't return to besieged home

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Southern California filmmaker linked to an anti-Islamic movie inflaming protests across the Middle East was interviewed Saturday by federal probation officers at a Los Angeles sheriff's station, authorities said.
Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, 55, was interviewed for about half an hour at the station shortly after 12 a.m. in his hometown of Cerritos, Calif., said Steve Whitmore, spokesman for the Los Angeles County sheriff's department.
After that, deputies dropped Nakoula off at an undisclosed location.
"He is gone. We don't know where he went," Whitmore said. "He said he is not going back to his home."
Federal officials are investigating whether Nakoula, who has been convicted of financial crimes, has violated the terms of his five-year probation. If so, a judge could send him back to prison.
Nakoula went voluntarily to the station, wearing a coat, hat, scarf and glasses that concealed his appearance. His home has been besieged by media for several days.
Whitmore said Nakoula was not handcuffed and the heavy apparel was his idea.
The probation department is reviewing the case of Nakoula, who pleaded no contest to bank fraud charges in 2010 and was banned from using computers or the Internet or using false identities as part of his sentence. Whitmore did not disclose other details about the interview.
Federal authorities have identified Nakoula, a self-described Coptic Christian, as the key figure behind "Innocence of Muslims," a film denigrating Islam and the Prophet Muhammad that ignited mob violence against U.S. embassies across the Middle East.
Much of the film was shot inside the offices of Media for Christ, a nonprofit based in the Los Angeles-area city of Duarte. The charity raised more than $1 million last year "to glow Jesus' light" to the world.
The Riverside County man who was a script advisor to the film and who has a long history of anti-Islamic activism told the Press-Enterprise newspaper that he has received multiple death threats.
"I'm really tired," Steven Klein said when he answered the door of his home in Hemet, Calif., Friday with a pistol in his hand and clad only in a pair of white shorts stained with what appeared to be ink spots.
The newspaper said Klein, a Vietnam veteran, appeared agitated. While waving the gun, he told the newspaper he was standing up for his First Amendment rights in helping with the film and said he is prepared to die for those rights.
A federal law enforcement official said authorities had connected Nakoula to a man using the pseudonym of Sam Bacile who claimed earlier to be writer and director of the film.
Violent protests set off by the film in Libya played a role in mob attacks in Benghazi that killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other American officials. Demonstrations against American missions have since spread to several other countries.

This guy is a flat out coward. He is hiding like a kid would when his "wrong" harmed others. On the other hand, the people used this lousy "film" as an excuse to stir up trouble. All religions take a poke or two and how do you do horrible things, against your own religion to harm others? It is all bs. But I hold anger toward anyone that would make sure this kind of hatred is shown in an unstable country, knowing and hoping it would cause trouble. It is their country and their religion so leave it at that. There are many religions I disagree with in our country but sure don't go out of my way to fight them or cause trouble. I bash my own past religion as I know that one the best! There is no excuse for what this group of haters have done and THAT is where the blame is. Cause and Effect! What is the old saying, "shyt rolls down hill" and in this case, it has become a huge pile
@greenriverkate You must be on crack. He hasn't done anything "wrong". He made a clip, in this country, where it is legal to do so. The fact it caused what it did just goes to show how messed up they are. He has every right to conceal his identity from people that want him dead. This doesn't make him a coward, it makes him smart if he wants to live another 6 months.
I checked You Tube and there are more that 20 anti Muslim videos that have been done since 2009. Amazingly the content of the videos are almost all identical to the recent Video. The rioters in the street are incited by their imams They are the ones who should be responsible. Anyways the content of the videos is something the Imams have dealt with for the last 1500 years. The video wasn't anything new..............Just a excuse
I read the headline expecting an article about Obama donor Bill Maher and his film "Religulous."
Yo, Sid - There is a vast difference in content between Religulous and The Innocence of Muslims.Â
Â
Maher didn't target a specific religion - He presented an examination of the contradictions, hypocrisy and mob mentality aspects that appear in organized religions. His summary at the end, cautions against sectarian justified human devastation. If we don't grow up, we'll kill eachother.
Â
Nakoula's work was a personal vendetta against Islam realized on film. Badly written, badly acted and lacking any transcendant or profound message.
Â
I get that you don't like Maher. No beef there - I agree with some but not all of his observations and opinion.Â
Â
Have a good week.
I guess Bill gets a pass for insulting TRTMNBN!
Â
The rowdys over in the Middle East could just have easily picked his film. Or South Park. Or draw The Unnamed Prophet Day.
Outside of obsessing over Maher, carrying his picture and crying into your pillow over his unrequited love and wondering why he hasn't replied to your love letters (ha - just poking you in the ribs)..... :-)
Â
I agree with your point - Killing people over a film is insane to most Americans. Then I thought about the cultural infusion of Islam from birth for the people who are still raging over the 'insult' of the film.Â
You're right - there are a lot of offensive satirical works floating around in the world; people commited to violent retaliation for a perceived grievance will adopt the most readily available 'source' from which to enact their rage.Â
Â
Always amazes me that they are not understanding that murdering people doesn't reflect an 'eye for an eye' religious philosophy - why don't they just make their own satirical film? No one should have died over this. Â
@Sid Vishess And your point?
@snoopy84  @Sid  Apparently flew right over your head.
@Sid Vishess @Sid Well, I pondered it for a few minutes-don't get it. I must be brain dead today, good night.
I am all for free speech, but what can anyone expect when you make a film bashing anothers religious beliefs? Some of these people are willing to die to defend their beliefs. Was it really a good idea to take a jab at them?
@SchönLicht You're either for free speech, or not, and this is not yelling fire in a theater.
Â
The film is very clearly done by Coptic Christians who have been persecuted in Egypt - and by that I mean rounded up and killed with the government turning a blind eye. So no matter how poorly done (and it's very poorly done), they didn't just take a jab for nothing. This was a knee jerk response to violence against Christians in Egypt - so this is in fact free speech. They aren't just taking a jab to start a fight.
Â
By the way, I'm not defending the character of the film, just pointing out that the content is in fact free speech, protected by our Constitution. To me the ideal of an open society and free speech are far more important than hurting Muslims feelings, so they can riot all they want. All religions are subject to criticism, some of even vile and in poor taste.
@Bellevue Scott @SchönLicht - Free speech is protected within our borders, yes, but that concept doesn't necessarily spill over into other sovereign nations.
Â
Regardless of why the film was made, it has incited insane rioting and murder. Curiously, as Sid Vishess pointed out, there are a number of other satirical works that could just as easily been the ignite the same reactions from Muslims.Â
Â
Two wrongs never make a 'right'
@SchönLicht "Was it really a good idea to take a jab at them?"
Â
If free speech were only acceptable when it is "safe" then it isn't free speech at all. These people chose to be thoughtless animals; they should be treated as such.Â
@LockesChild @SchönLicht Today, CNN showed big crowds of people in these areas holding signs condemning the actions of the prosters. Many in Libya are upset with the murder of  U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.
Â
I wonder why we don't see more of that by the media. It is a shame how little we know about that part of the world, why we only get the bad side. This would be akin to only show the bad side of our country, like the mass shooting, occupy wall street, WTO riots by anarchist.
My point, knowledge is powerful, ignorance is dangerous!
Free speech is safe in our country but may not apply in another, we have no controll over that. I doubt anyone making those films will get arrested. The only reason this guy was talked to was the fact he is on probation.
I think that while this guy and his buddy, Terry Jones, have the right to free speech that I happen to find offensive (due to the amateur nature of this film, it offends my eyes/ears/ brain...and it is a stupid stunt in my opinion) , I still have to support free speech, even when I do not like it. I believe that this situation is being orchestrated by Jones and Nakoula, and that they took a calculated risk in promoting this incredibly poorly made film, knowing that the rabid anti-muslim knee jerks would probably go spend their money on it. There's no such thing as bad publicity, and Jones & Nakoula are much like extremist among the people they are taunting in that the possibility of being martyred does not appear to daunt them. Think of it this way, remember the gay Jesus email chain letter (that is completely fabricated, look it up on snopes if you do not know what I am talking about)? Well, what if it were true, and someone made a film about a gay Jesus, then started showing it in small towns throughout America. Most people, even though they found the film very distasteful, would not take any action. Some people would protest peacefully, as is their right. There is a possibility that some would take violent action. For those of you who have not seen any evidence that there are also Muslim's against violent actions like what happened this week, please explore the web sites reddit & buzzfeed, as both have posted several times this week photos of Muslims condemning violence. I have also seen promoters of violence on both sites, I am only suggesting that having additional sources of information is a good thing, and that a local outlet will never provide as many facets of a story as a national or international source. I like reddit because it has contributions directly from the readers, be it original or re-posted.
I'm not a Liberal in the "all they need is a hug" sense, I am a liberal in the "Let's get as many facts as possible before jumping to conclusions" sense.
America used to be a Country - the only Country - where one could laugh at or be laughed at by others. Â It used to be a Country where one had the right to speak out, to say what they want about religion or taxes without reprisal.
Â
America is and will remain as free as its people. Â This video is really junk. Â It's homemade. Â Kids in cinematic college have made much better.
Â
We need to defend his right to say it, but more importantly, we need to defend America to these 3rd world Countries. Â Our country, America, is not like theirs.
Â
FREEDOM
@sentryone I'm sure if I agree with you or not. I beleave our country is still what youb say and it is not the government that has a problem with free speech or Limbuagh would be shut down.
Corporations are the one who have a problem with free speech, once you agree to work you give up your free speech.
Example: You leave work go home and make a political statement on facebook and a co worker sees it passes it on gets back to the boss, you maybe let go.
You post pictures of drinking at a party or bar, you may be let go.
These events have happened and legall.Â
Â
Why do employers get a free pass on freedom of speech and invasion of privacy. There some companies that require access to your Facebook as a reference. Where do you draw the line.
The government does not have this policy.
@snoopy84  @sentryone The answer to why employers get to usurp the constitution (both 1st and 4th Amendment rights): Because we let them.
Â
In situations like that, if even 50% of the workers had backbone, fought back, and stood in solidarity, that kind of nonsense wouldn't happen. But nobody wants to make the sacrifice.
@snoopy84Â "The government does not have this policy."
Â
That is moronic and totally untrue. There are many times when a government employee's free speech is constrained. A good example was the lawbreaking (of the Hatch Act) statement of Sibellious regarding re-electing Obama. Sibellious should have been immediately fired for a criminal violation even though this was her opinion.
@LockesChild You miss the point, most people who work for the government go into it knowing thier limitations, some may even go to jail.
Â
The point was about non government employees are subject to losing thier free speech and have thier privacy invaded by corporations, school districts are where I found most cases.
Other than that, the government does don't violate that right. All those who may have used thier free speech that may have been negative toward the government or insulting to the public or just just political opinion are fired everyday day by the private sector.
Â
"The government does not have this policy." was phrased wrong. I meant the government does not have a policy to deny free speech outside thier structure.
Â
People working working for the government know this. Private sector employees in many cases find out after the compaliant was luanched.
How is making a movie a probation violation??? Seems to me it is just harassment regardless if the guy made a stupid movie or not.
@SkingCoWa Once you are convicted of a crime, you have made an agreement that you don't have the same rights as a regular citizen. The law doesn't even have to have a reason to have someone on probation come in just to chat, This goy committed bank  fruad crimes and this church he worked with raised alot of money over the years. Yea, there might be a few questions.
Bank fruad usually invloves other peoples money-could have been yours, that makes him a scumbag that should be harrassed.
Â
@SkingCoWa "The probation department is reviewing the case of Nakoula, who pleaded no contest to bank fraud charges in 2010 and was banned from using computers or the Internet or using false identities as part of his sentence."
Â
Hope that clears it up for you.
@SkingCoWa I agree.  At least this ex con is working, which is more than most criminals do.
If the Christians acted like this there would have been riots every night that In Living Color was on the air. This is just their lame excuse to act this way. It has nothing to with the movie, they are just claiming it is about it. They simply want everyone to think the way they do and will use any miens they can to achieve that goal.
Wish the Islamic extremists would realize this movie was made by Christian extremists and leave the rest of us alone. Â Two religions creating all this violence and bloodshed. Â
@KRM66 Oh Please, first of all what was put forth about Muhammad & Islam was factually true. They just don't want to be reminded of it and the hypocrisy of Islam claiming to be the "Religion of Peace" yet the Koran states to conquer and kill all infidels if they don't submit to Islam and convert. This movie wasn't made by any "Christian extremists" and you know it. The only ones creating any violence and bloodshed over any of this is these terrorists in these Islamic countries.
 @Gaikokujin The point still remains.
You want to have a beef with muslims over who has the better sky monster... knock yourself out. Just leave me out of it. I will be busy studing science and facts.
Â
 @T H I S LOL uh no
Anyone who does not see this whole thing is being orchestrated from a larger source is sleeping behind the wheel.
Â
Our government is working with this guy or should I say he is working with them, to put this out there to create conflict and turmoil in the middle east. Â
Â
The timing of it's release (right around 9/11) tells me everything I need to know.
@sunnysandiego Some copies were posted about that time, but the original was posted on July 2nd and is still there. Clicking the "show video stats" button shows that it had virtually no views until last week.
Why protect this guy? Why waste tax payers dollars? Why make it look to the Islamic world as if we condone this kind of hate? If you make a movie that you know will put your life in danger then you are on your own. Make a peace offering and drop this guy off in the middle of Libya with a note "To: the people of Islam. Â From: The United States. We are sorry and you are welcome." Get rid of this scum bag.
@Barlion No, we're not sorry, we won't apologize, and they can all go screw themselves.
Â
If you don't like free speech, if you don't believe in the ideals of this country, then go live somewhere where they have Sharia law. But don't apologize for the rest of us.
@Barlion Bill Maher made a movie mocking Islam and donated a million bucks to Obama. Maybe he should be sacrificed as well.
Â
Not the South Park guys though. I liked the "Leader Of A  Religion That Must Not Be Shown In A Bear Suit!" episode.
I'm gonna make a short religious film. Â From the beginning to the end, it's nothing but Jesus beating the cr** out of Mohammad utilizing various techniques of Drunken Fists. Â
@Drunken Fists That's totally sick and twisted, but I think it's a hilarious idea. I needed a good chuckle this morning.
I hereby appoint Nakoula Basseley Nakoula the next ambassador to Libya. Dude, next plane out in the morning, you are SO on it...
 @tufa23 Muhahahahaha!  Good one!
So, why has the US government started enforcing Sharia blasphemy laws? And, what better photo to spread around the middle east to give them the impression that we can and will if they riot loudly enough. Utterly pathetic. A MAJOR propaganda coup by the Islamists.
Â
Literal "Brown Shirts" in a literal midnight knock at the door. Here. In America. The guy at the top has GOT to go.
@RN1 They aren't enforcing blasphemy laws, they are making sure this guy has upheld his probation rules (his video is on Youtube but he isn't allowed to use a computer), plus that he isn't killed (lots of death threats). Nothing you have said has anything to do with this administration.
@RN1 They started back herewith the last push for it back at the U.N. in late 2011

@Gaikokujin That applies to Christians too, in fact, all religions. And it is nothing to do with criticizing radicalism, it's about defamation of a person based on their religion rather than _their_ actions.

@therunner So when it is used against you and your friends and family if you say anything that Islam objects to and you or your friends and family are jailed or worse, you will be ok with that? Wow
@Gaikokujin Who cares who is writing it, it is an equal-opportunity resolution for all religions, even yours.
@therunner no this resolution that was and is still trying to be passed at the U.N. is being brought forth by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) an organization of 56 muslim nations and was brought about after "incidents ranging from satirizing Mohammed in a newspaper cartoon to criticism of Sharia Law and post-9/11 security check profiling."Â
Â
This resolution is about trying to make it illegal at a global level to "defame Muhammad or Islam". It was brought forward to a vote in 2007, 2009 and last year in 2011, each time with modification to language of the resolution in order to make it more acceptable.Â
Â
The fact that Saudi Arabia singled it out for praise says a lot, since terrorism and oil are the two main exports of Saudi Arabia.Â
@RN1 [The probation department is reviewing the case of Nakoula, who pleaded no contest to bank fraud charges in 2010 and was banned from using computers or the Internet or using false identities as part of his sentence.] And [deputies dropped Nakoula off at an undisclosed location." He is gone. We don't know where he went," Whitmore said. "He said he is not going back to his home."] I.e. it appears that they were mostly just doing their job and they might even have initially saved him, at least for a while, from the media to whatever.
@RN1 Exactly, RN1.Â
@RN1 umm... are you insane? just sayin...
@tufa23  @RN1 Tufa, I am incensed at your hate speech. I will ask the government to arrest you for annoying me. And then take you to Room 101. If I become violent, it is your fault for provoking me.
Either a person can express themselves freely or they cannot. What side are you on?" Muhammad's side or Freedom's side? Say it here.
@Barlion  @Rick4001CS What? Like in the Spanish Inquisition?
@Tom Allmendinger  @Romey-Rome  @Barlion  @Rick4001CS Many conflicts are contrived or exacerbated by the intelligence agencies.  MI5 assets infiltrated the IRA decades back,  and pulled off some of the most gruesome acts of terrorism.  It worked;  people lost sympathy for those "Irish terrorists".  look it up.
@Tom Allmendinger Great example.  The violence has not stopped, it has just dwindled a bit.  Since 9/11, Americans have not supported the IRA as they had throughout the decades before. Â
@Romey-Rome  @Barlion  @Rick4001CS how about the IRA actions between Protestants and Catholics in Ireland up through the early 2000s
@Barlion  @Rick4001CS When was the last one?
@Rick4001CS Muhammad has no side. You are greatly mis informed. Don't take the terrorist's ideals as Islam because they are not even close. Also don't forget the millions that have been slaughtered in the name of Christ.
