FBI: Man used racial epithet before slapping crying baby on plane
ATLANTA (AP) - A 60-year-old Idaho man has been charged with simple assault for allegedly slapping an infant aboard an Atlanta-bound flight.
In an affidavit filed in U.S. District Court, FBI special agent Daron Cheney says Joe Rickey Hundley, of Hayden Idaho, slapped the 2-year-old during a Delta Air flight from Minneapolis on Feb. 8.
The child's mother, 33-year-old Jessica Bennett, of Minneapolis, told authorities the boy was crying as the plane prepared for landing. Bennett says Hundley was sitting next to her and slapped the boy in his face, causing a scratch under his right eye. She says Hundley used a racial epithet while demanding her to quiet the boy.
Hundley "told her to shut that ('N word') baby up," Cheney said in the affidavit. "Ms. Bennett received assistance from several people on the plane, including male passenger Todd Wooten." Cheney said.
Wooten was seated rows in front of Bennett and said he came to help after he heard derogatory language being used behind him, according to court documents. Bennett said the infant began crying louder after he was slapped.
District attorneys officials say Hundley was not taken into custody and it is unclear when the case will go to court.
"We think that it is important to let the case develop, and we'll see how it all comes out," Hundley's attorney Marcia Shein said Friday.
A phone number for Bennett could not be located.

Fact is, black people calling each other the N word and white people saying they're from the south all implies the same thing. It implies that certain things are accepted if you're part of a group. There in lies the problem with today's society. We are all put in groups, we aren't seen as individuals. We are black, white, hispanic, asian... and within each respective groups are things that aren't acceptable in the other group. This creates the stereotypes and this creates again, people seeing everyone as being the stereotypical person of that ethnic group instead of me just being me and you giving me a chance from scratch w/o prejudice or favoritism.
I am quite shocked the guy did not have to be carried off the plane on a stretcher.
@Alex Clayton Yeah, but just proves the people around him were far better than he is.Â
If it were by baby I would be the one in jail for beating that bigoted old man to a bloody pulp.
I drive a school bus and they have trouble sitting down for just 15 minutes until they get to school. Imagine a 4 hour plane ride?Â
I have to say, if someone hit my child they would leave with at least a bloody nose! It's so hard for a child to sit still for that long in an enclosed space. Even as an adult, I get really bored. I have never been able to sleep sitting up either. We all just need to be a little more understanding. Remember what it was like being a little kid in an adult world.
I'm very surprised that he wasn't taken into custody. They are so picky about peoples behavior on airplanes these days. I sure hope he does some time.Â
@jasmine Odd, isn't it? Someone gets a panic attack and they have airport security meet them. If some creep slapped a stranger's baby in the mall, he'd be arrested.Â
why are these inbred racist type always named "Joe Ricky" or "Ricky Bobby" ....
dude ought to really enjoy his time in Atlanta! lol
@SwampThing It kind of explains things doesn't it? lol
I was on a flight fron Tucson to Seattle a few years ago and the mom and baby sitting next to me were just beside themselves. The baby was not happy and the mom was so worried the little one would disturb people. Even before the flight took off the baby would start up and poor mom would get upset further upsetting the baby. About 10 minutes up in the air I was like, give me the baby. She handed over her baby and that little girl sat on my lap the whole time and didn't cry a bit! I am pretty sure it was because I was not stressed out and the baby sensed that. My long winded point... if someone needs help, and everyone does, just be kind and lend a hand. Sometimes a little kindness goes a long way... for everyone.
I like sitting next to someone with a child on a plane. I get talking to the Mom and then the kid wants attention. HA HA my plan usually works. I get to play with the kid. And most of the time Mom feels like she is getting a break and I get my kid fix. Traveling with kids can be a chore sometimes.
seapea MP: You're so lame. You probably think this song is about you, you're so laaaaame.
@VoiceofReasonÂ
lol I know this "song" isn't about me and that's THE POINT. It's about a man ACCUSED of slapping a child, as simple as that. It's not about Hayden ID, it's not about the state of Idaho, it's not about White people from Hayden, or Idaho, or anywhere anti-Whites smear as a "KNOWN RACIST" enclave. Â
Using the "N-Word" isn't a crime but assaulting people is, even minors. So let's try to muster up a little American spirit and let the man have his day in court because the actions he's accused of are still ALLEGED.
@seapea MP @VoiceofReason Wrong. This is about a man who assaulted a (stranger's) child after using language that many courts in this country consider to be racist. Again, had this been MY child, I'd have been taken off the plane in cuffs for what I'd do to that guy.
@what?
Wrong? You state that like you were there on the plane and witnessed the events. Unless you're willing to TRUTHFULLY testify to that, I have no idea how you can be so certain what transpired on that plane. Why are you so eager to try, convict and sentence the man? Is it because he ALLEGEDLY slapped a child, because he ALLEGEDLY said the "N-Word" or is because he's White? The more I read your comments, the more I can't help but conclude you're anti-White. Â
Why do you hate White people?Â
Why does the FBI have to handle this instead of the local authorities?Â
@jowsuf Anything that happens on an airplane is a Federal Crime. The Federal Aviation Agency is in charge of air travel.
I have no plans to visit Hayden, but I do know nice people from the area. They told me they were scared of some areas and they had the same color skin as the people in those communities.
I hope she can file a civil suit and clean in out. What a hateful old man.
@PollywannacrackerÂ
"file a civil suit and clean in out"... what? That's sounds like your advocating ethnically cleansing Northern ID, i.e. GENOCIDE. You do know that's a crime, correct? People go to jail for that, some even get the death penalty. If I didn't know better I would say your advocating the Genocide of White people in Northern ID.
@seapea MP @Pollywannacracker -- get a grip seapea.
Nowhere in the comment from Polly was there any threat of death, violence or genocide.
a civil law suit means 'clean out his bank account', not do harm to the man himself.
Of course, any idiot who would slap someone's baby and use that kind of racist language can't possibly be called a 'man' - he's a moronic bigoted idiot in a man's body.
Too bad I wasn't on that flight. I probably would have 'returned' his 'favor' that he gave that child. And done it more than once...
@what?
"For ourselves and our posterity" Preamble to the US constitution. Â
Anti-Whites like yourself can surely figure out what that means.
@OrcasThunder
If you thought the war between the states was about freeing the Negro, you swallowed way too much of MommyProfessors BS. Â Â
@seapea MPÂ @Superman_1967Â "What I miss are the days when White people weren't dragged out into the street, to be hung, drawn and quartered for voicing their own opinions no matter how unpopular they were. That was something very AMERICAN, so much so that it was en-grained into our founding documents."
Racist behavior and discrimination were not included in the constitution.
@seapea MPÂ That's not what we're discussing here now is it? Let's just keep it on topic shall we?
@seapea MP@Superman_1967"so much so that it was en-grained into our founding documents. "
Are you talking about the clause that preserved slavery?
Yeah, that was so very "American"...and it led to a small disagreement called the US Civil War - where White and Black men were subjected to far worse than being hung and drawn and quartered...
Are those the "good old days" you long for?Â
Face it, your attitude is the clarion call of stupid.
@Superman_1967
What I miss are the days when White people weren't dragged out into the street, to be hung, drawn and quartered for voicing their own opinions no matter how unpopular they were. That was something very AMERICAN, so much so that it was en-grained into our founding documents.Â
@seapea MPÂ You must really miss the "good ol days" when the N word was still somewhat socially acceptable.
@FormerMarineSgt
I would hardly call noticing the double standard when non-whites behave similarly towards Whites and the charge of "RACIST" never seems to get applied to them as going "overboard". It's hard not to conclude that anti-racist is a code word for anti-White.
@seapea MP -- I think you're quite a bit overboard in the protestng the 'anti-white' bandwagon.
There are words, phrases and actions that reasonable people don't use. When they do, they are crossing the line into bigotry, racism and hate.Â
Anti-gay, racially charged (aka racist), anti-religious hateful words, phrases and actions are just some of the problems that ALL peoples come across.
This case happens to be a jerk of a white person who crossed that line using a racially charged word in a very specific context.Â
No - Racism is not the 21st century 'heresy'. It's the 21st century's 'what the F is wrong with idiots who still act like that'?
@seapea MP Nope. To speak that way was meant to be hateful and racist and the old far t knew exactly what he was saying and doing. I am absolutely amazed that he wasn't taken into custody. It's one thing to say a word that many feel is taboo, it's completely different to make the remark he did and even remotely suggest that the immediate backlash be simply 'jumping on the anti-white bandwagon'. Personally, I think that passenger is quite lucky that no one on that plane decided to slap him back.
@FormerMarineSgt Â
I think you're right about the civil suit, I misread the comment. I believe monetary damages would be the only option she could seek assuming the allegations were true.Â
It's shame everybody jumps on the anti-White wagon any time a White person DARES speak one of the "forbidden" words. "RACISM" has become the 21st century "HERESY". The crowds carrying their pitchforks are soon to follow and next thing you know we're having a gud'ole fashion burning at the stake.Â
Idaho is a beautiful state. Unfortunately it has quite a few losers living there.
That Idaho skinhead needs to be taught a lesson.
@BlevnangelsAre you saying that because he was from Idaho and used the "N-WORD" he MUST BE A SKINHEAD? You sound like someone who's got a problem with White people in general and you're using this story as an opportunity to vent your anti-White vile before the world. You probably even think of yourself as some kind of "anti-racist" but you just come off as anti-White. Anti-racist is a codeword for Anti-White.
@seapea MP @Blevnangels Wrong wrong wrongity wrong... You aren't exactly making his case look any better... Or yours for that matter.
@what?
Again, you state the reported events like you were there on the plane and witnessed it. Why are you so eager to try, convict and sentence the man? Is it because you hate White people?  Â
You're just proving that anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White.
@OrcasThunderÂ
And now you're not denying the fact you aren't willing to give Mr. Hundley his right to DUE PROCESS, you're justifying it. Is it because he's White?
@seapea MP @what? The obvious truth, as given by witnesses and the victim, was that this inbred tool told the mother to "shut that n- baby up" prior to assaulting the 2 year old child. You, nor anyone else has the right to assault a child, that's the first problem. The second, was his choice of words elevated this from child abuse and assault, to a racially motivated crime. He could have chosen any other language, but he deliberately CHOSE to use that word in the process of assaulting the child. Whom I feel the need to add is just a child and completely innocent here.
@seapea MP@what?" It's very UN-American to try and convict him before he has had his day in court. "
And yet that didn't seem to stop your ancestors from dragging people of color out in the street and lynching the, without that trial you speak of.
@what?
I'm not trying make his case look any better, I'm just pointing out the OBVIOUS TRUTH. The case is about a man ACCUSED of slapping a child, as simple as that. It's very UN-American to try and convict him before he has had his day in court. Â
And by the way, using the "N-Word" isn't a crime even if the person saying it happens to be WHITE.
@seapea MP @Blevnangels Â
Let see.
1) Guy openly drops the N word on a plane full of people freely? Check
2) Guy slaps a toddler because its crying during landing that's not even his kid? Check
3) Guy is from Hayden, Idaho? Check
4) Aryan Nations Headquarters was, until bankrupted in a lawsuit, in Hayden, Idaho? Check
5) The KKK Snowman that caused wide spread outrage last year? Yup. Hayden, Idaho. Check Check Check
If it walks like a duck, if it quacks like a duck, if it swims like a duck...
A skinhead? Maybe not. But hey, maybe a member of the Klan, or a card carrying member of the Aryan Nations, or a strong sympathizer or...
A reasonable human being does not haul up and slap a kid that isn't even their own simply for crying and drop the N word in anger while seatbelted 17-1/2 inches away from the parent of same child.
@OrcasThunder
I know anti-Whites like yourself love turning this world into an Orwellian hellhole but saying the "N-Word" isn't a crime and attacking White people who ALLEGEDLY say it is just DISGRACEFUL.Â
@what?
Again, you state the reported events like you were there on the plane and witnessed it. Unless you're willing to TRUTHFULLY testify to that, I have no idea how you can be so certain what transpired on that plane. Why are you so eager to try, convict and sentence the man? Is it because you hate White people? Â
You do know that being anti-White doesn't make you MORAL or ENLIGHTENED, it just makes you anti-White.
Anti-racist is a codeword for anti-White.
@seapea MP @FormerMarineSgt "Uttering the "N-Word" isn't a crime"
You're right. But then calling someone the 'n-word' before striking them makes it a racially motivated hate crime. So again, let's just keep it on topic. I know you're in a hurry to make uncle dad proud and get out the bedsheets with the least wee stains on them, but let's focus here. This isn't about free speech. This is about a racially motivated hate crime.
@seapea MPÂ @FormerMarineSgt Actually, using the word IS a crime in some situations. For example when used with physical actions to subject another person to your hate.
And if you WERE actually an "MP", you were a disgrace to the service.
@FormerMarineSgt Â
Let's try to remember folks, the actions he's accused of making are just ALLEGED. Uttering the "N-Word" isn't a crime, even if the person saying it happens to be WHITE.
@seapea MP You keep confusing anti-white with anti-retard.
Also, the fact that you keep capitalizing white says quite a bit.
@seapea MPÂ - I agre with the statment by 'what?'.
I'm saying it because you are repeatedly pushing the defense of an indefensible act by a person who purposefully chose the most insulting racist word possible against someone of another race, and doing so by playing the 'anti-racist' card.Â
@seapea MP I'm white and i think you're acting like a tool.
@seapea MPÂ No, you're defending a racist tool who decided to hit a stranger's child. There's a rather big difference.
@FormerMarineSgt
In your opinion I "protesteth too much" but you're only saying that because I'm defending White people. It's easy to be anti-White when the majority of public and private institutions sanction it.
@seapea MP @Howard Beale -- soundslike you protesteth too much there seapea.
@Howard BealeHave you even been to Hayden ID? Do you know anybody from Hayden ID? You sound like some brainwashed anti-White who learned from MommyProfessor that White people in Hayden ID are bunch of naziswhowantstokillsixmillionjews!  You're just proving the point, anti-racist is a codeword for Anti-White.
