Gunman released from jail hours before Colorado killings

LONGMONT, Colo. (AP) - Investigators were unable to immediately determine when a shooter purchased a gun used to kill three people, including his ex-girlfriend, who was on the phone with a 911 dispatcher when she was killed.
The gunman who had just been released from jail on domestic violence charges then shot and killed himself Tuesday, Weld County Sheriff John Cook said. Investigators searching the gunman's home found the original box the handgun had been sold in, but they did not find a receipt, and it was unclear when he bought it, Cook said.
The victims included the ex-girlfriend's sister and the sister's husband. All were found dead in a home in unincorporated Weld County outside Longmont, about 35 miles north of Denver.
Cook identified the dead as 25-year-old Beatriz Cintora-Silva; her sister, Maria Cintora-Silva, 22; and Max Aguirre Ojeda, 32, who was Maria Cintora-Silva's husband.
The gunman was identified as Daniel Sanchez, 31.
Sanchez had just been released from jail on domestic violence charges.
Authorities said Beatriz Cintora-Silva called 911 shortly after 4 a.m. to report shots fired. The 911 dispatcher heard her cry, "No, no, no," followed by a gunshot.
Sanchez took the phone, told the dispatcher he had killed three people and that he was going to kill himself, authorities said. The dispatcher then heard a single shot followed by silence.
Cook said Sanchez had been arrested Saturday in Longmont on charges of domestic violence, kidnapping and false arrest for allegedly holding his ex-girlfriend against her will after their relationship ended.
Sanchez was released on bail from the Boulder County jail at 10 p.m. Monday and drove to the home where Cintora-Silva had taken refuge with her sister and brother-in-law, Cook said.
"He shot out the back door," Cook said. "He shot that out then gained entry into the house."
The bodies of Ojeda and his wife were found in one bedroom. His sister-in-law and Sanchez were found in another, Cook said.
Authorities found a .45-caliber Glock handgun near Sanchez's body and 16 spent shell casings around the house, Cook said, adding that investigators were still examining the house and might find more.
Cook said Sanchez had two magazines for the gun, and each held 13 rounds of ammunition.
Sanchez had been living in another house in the same neighborhood of tidy modular homes, winding walkways and parks.

One thing the government continually fails to do is once they have these guys in custody, KEEP THEM THERE until it can be determined if they are unstable. Usually they are unstable or they wouldn't be there in jail in the first place. To just release him and let his victims fend for themselves is just irresponsible. Bail should not be offered in these cases.
Catch and release: good for salmon, not so good for homicidal maniacs with a temper management problem.
@georgef But how do you know who the "homicidal maniacs with a temper management problem" are?
@Moderate Joe  @georgefAny chance they are the ones booked into jail for domestic violence???  how bout we err on the side of caution here? does that make the slightest sense to you?
It seems to be the typical bureaucratic BS of one hand not knowing what the other is doing. Get the systems hooked up so when a person is booked for crimes they are automatically on a list to not sell weapons to. What a horrible ending to an already horrible existance for those people.
@swansong68
NRA would never let that fly, after all he is innocent until proven guilty, and for god and country he should be able to buy a gun, because that's his constitutional right. Â <insert sarcasm>
Â
@usecommonsense The NRA has no such stance.
Doesn't Colorado have a mandatory wait period on handguns?.. If he had a CPL, then it should have been suspended and removed from his possession upon release.. therefore he couldn't have bought the 45 used after he was released..(legally that is)
Yep, the government, judges and lawmakers will be able to stop gun violence. (sarcasm off)
@Funky-Munky : Yes but to do nothing would label the politicians as uncaring, unresponsive, or maybe even a bit to blame for allowing gun violence to happen. So, part of their revised mission statement is to do something about this. The shooters certainly have something to do with it too, but lets save that for another time.
@johnbe Well no matter what proof is in the past. they outlawed alcohol and did that work? The there is the illegal drugs yet does that stop people from getting them? What can they do about it? IF someone wished to do you harm they will find a way. Look at the news from China where no one can own a gun, I have read two stories where men have gone into schools with a knife and killed several children. Do we ban all knives?
@usecommonsense Yep and the same argument can be made that if maybe one teacher was armed or there were armed guards at the school less than 26 would have been killed. I find it somewhat sad that we accept armed guards at banks to protect our money but not at schools to protect or children.
Â
@Al Frank  @johnbe No, but you can rest assured that less then 26 would have been killed in CT, if he had only a knife.
@johnbe Obama himself has said he is going to do everything in his power. While at the same time, promising NOTHING.
@TheBronze : Just saw an interview on this tv channel with a mental-health care provider who says the answer to the mayhem is getting rid of the guns. How futile it must be to know there is no effective treatment that would prevent troubled people from harm/harming themselves or others. So that expert had no choice but to take the anti-gun stance, because mental health issues are just too complicated to deal with.
@Funky-Munky Yes, because doing absolutely nothing to address any of the issues surrounding violence is equally as useful as making snarky comments on the internet.
@quidproquo Let me know when you can stop a murderer from killing.... It doesn't matter what you do.... They walk amongst us daily.......
@Funky-Munky  @quidproquo hey genius... had they kept him locked up, he would not have killed anyone.
