Hostages assaulted at Nordstrom Rack store in California
LOS ANGELES (AP) - Robbers stabbed a clothing store employee and sexually assaulted another during an hours-long hostage drama that ended early Friday with a police SWAT team surging into the shop and rescuing 14 workers.
No robbers were found. Police were seeking at least two men and also were trying to determine whether a car found abandoned in neighboring Culver City was the getaway vehicle.
The ordeal at the Nordstrom Rack store near Los Angeles International Airport began at about 11 p.m. when a man called 911 and reported that his girlfriend had called and said there were gunmen in the store, Lt. Andy Neiman said.
Police officers and special weapons team members swarmed the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center, an outdoor shopping center that also contains restaurants and a theater.
The officers saw a man leave the second-floor store but he ran back inside when they tried to contact him, Neiman said.
Moments later, another man came out with a woman, but when he saw the police he grabbed her and pushed her back inside, Neiman said.
SWAT members surrounded the location but weren't able to talk to anyone inside during the four-hour standoff.
When they finally burst into the store, they found hostages locked in a storage room and others in a bathroom, Neiman said.
The 13 women and one man were all believed to be employees because the store was closed when the robbery began, Neiman said.
One hostage was treated at the scene for a non-life threatening stab wound, Neiman said.
Another employee had been sexually assaulted, Neiman said, although he declined to provide details.
Other workers complained of minor injuries, "probably because they'd been manhandled or pushed away by the assailants," the lieutenant said.
Officers searched the store to make sure nobody was hiding but didn't find the robbers, Neiman said.
Here is an update to the story.

"In an effort to get ahead of the current proposed assault weapons bans, LAPD SWAT attempted to lure the men out with salted caramel and brightly color feathers. Needless to say the suspects got away."

@Gadsden Well, I would laugh, but unfortunately it's too tragic in it's truth. Unfortunately the good citizens of Cali have a very difficult time arming themselves to protect themselves. Â
@Susabelle What's more tragic is the Government in California failing to allow their citizens to protect themselves. They are forcing them to sit and wait for the next bad guy to ignore the laws and harm them. Those who think the Government can protect them from harm is delusional. I guess California forgot the Supreme Court ruled it's a protected right.
In any SWAT operation, they first get the plans to the establishment along with ventilation, underground water and sewage line schemas and block any possible exits. Then they send in a negotiator to talk to the perps.

I am amazed these guys escaped from LAPD SWAT.
According to the Brady Campaign, California has the strictest gun laws in the nation. Life is good for criminals; no Nick Meli around.
@Yakima Belle Yup. With no chance of a legally carried handgun for self defense there, the criminals had nothing to fear. I hear California is beautiful, but I would never travel there until the Supreme Court inevitably strikes down their defacto ban on civilian carry.
Judging by a search on this story and reading several results, the police did not release any descriptions of the suspects. Can hope that means they have enough to find them. Otherwise this could come down to what they can collect.
@Hawaii72Â California papers rarely describe criminals in horrendous crimes due to the fact that it is considered racially insensitive.
Description of the suspects please. Or are we feeling a bit too PC today?
 @dylandawgieÂ
It's an AP wire story.
@dylandawgie Hopefully it means they have a good idea of who the scum are and don't want to scare them into hiding or running.
They were all inside... the police had the place surrounded... and they got away... I'm confused... Those must be some pretty sneaky robbers!
Beam us up Scotty
They got away?? Wow...
This is why we need to pay for prison time for scum like this and leave them there.
That's horrible, I hope they catch the bastards..
