Iran, al-Qaida, Taliban told to pay $6 billion for Sept. 11 attacks

NEW YORK (AP) — A federal magistrate judge says al-Qaida, the Taliban and Iran should pay $6 billion to relatives of Sept. 11 victims for aiding in the 2001 terror attacks.
The magistrate's recommendation is largely symbolic since it would be nearly impossible to collect any damages.
But plaintiff Ellen Saracini tells the Daily News that she is happy about Manhattan Federal Magistrate Judge Frank Maas' recommendation Monday. Her husband, Victor, was the captain of one of the planes that struck the World Trade Center.
Last year, Judge George Daniels signed a default judgment on the lawsuit brought by family members of 47 victims. He found al-Qaida, the Taliban and Iran liable and asked the magistrate to determine damages.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has denied any Iranian connection in the attacks.

I don't believe that Iran had anything to do with the 9/11 attacks, especially since the Sunni Al Qaida network has been attacking their western regions for some time (specifically it was a branch off of that network, and those attacks were not endorsed by OBL) However Iran should be taken to court for using their Al Quds forces to train Jaish al Mahdi terrorists to cause trouble in Iraq. It was JaM, not Al Qaida that was responsible for the problems in the Sadr City district of Baghdad, and the rocket attacks that occured in Baghdad. Iran has also been supplying arms and munitions to Islamic terrorists, and the Hezbollah terror org is largely funded by them, and by drug trafficking. Hezbollah also expanded operations into South America recently. Iran is doing a lot, but they were not involved with the 9/11 attacks.
Blind finger pointing ... seriously suing a inanimate object for something that is never going to be paid... isn't there actual things that need to be addressed rather than this circular non-productive BS.
I would love to think that this is in preparation for a significant sweep across that entire area without any greed or avarice on our part, but we all know better nowadays. Seizures never seeing the light of day, and various levels of immunity all in place. What could go wrong?
I smell an appeal coming soon........ :
Can we add Pakistan to that list...
Has someone been working on this amount since 9-11? Good luck getting paid for that.
the world just collectively LOL'd at America.....
@ClickClackNW not that i don't agree with your comment, but unfortunately.
Â
America is to war what rainbows are to rain.
Â
95% of asses about to be kicked are not US citizens.
Â
We are quickly approaching the point where the global map shows America, surrounded by smoking craters with the caption "here there be monsters."
I've not heard that there were any links to Iran with regard to 9/11 (even Bush focused on Afghanistan and Iraq). Shouldn't we be going after Saudi Arabia where most of the hijackers were from? And anyway, if these were stateless actors why are we focusing on countries at all?
Since this is only symbolic, why stop at 6 billion? Why not really make a statement and require them to give up their first born children for ten years and raise them Christian, lol.Â
I sure hope this works out better than expecting Iraq to pay for our invasion of their country...
We lost more than 3,000 people that day, but we also lost thousands of soldiers fighting AQ and the Taliban. I agree with Trump that Iraq and Afghanistan should compensate the families of the fallen soldiers. We liberated them asking nothing in return, and they don't even bother thanking us for that sacrifice. At the very least they should publicly thank President George W Bush.
@Saving Grace  What fairy tales have you been reading. We "liberated" them?  From what?  We liberated them from their families, their homes, their livelihoods. We destroyed their countries because of the lies of their "benefactor" g.w. bush.
Â
We killed 100's of 1000's of innocent civilians over there and are still doing it. Maybe that's what you mean by "liberated."
Â
Here's an idea - study the FACTS, not fox snooze and definitely not ANY republicon on earth.
@comdown "We killed 100's of 1000's of innocent civilians over there and are still doing it. Maybe that's what you mean by "liberated."
Â
Uh no we did not. If you are going to make a statement regarding the tragedy of their deaths at least be honest in your statement. The Muslims, whether Shia or Sunni blew themselves up and shot each other with their AK's & RPK's & RPG's. They have been battling amongst themselves & killing themselves for roughly 1300 years.
@comdown @Saving Grace From what I have personally been told, while on a flight sitting next to someone heading back to Afganistan/Iraq, the people like them (the soldiers) they come out and will give them tea, as they are doing their patrols... he actually said it is very difficult to say no more tea to them...Â
I have heard this from more than one individual..
Unfortunately, there are those over there that are the exact opposite.. and want nothing more than a chance to kill our soldiers. (or anyone else who doesn't want to think, or believe the way they do)
and then there is the news media which only reports stuff that can sell papers or gain viewers for the commercials they run during the broadcast.
This usually translates to tragic things, not the good things that are going on.
@Saving Grace "At the very least they should publicly thank President George W Bush."
Â
Is that the same George W. Bush that the GOP is going to so profusely thank at the convention?
It must be a bit embarrassing when you hold a political convention, and have to ask the past President AND Vice President to please stay home...
@Saving Grace "We liberated them asking nothing in return"
Heck, we liberated them without even asking if they WANTED to be liberated! And all we expected from them was a discount on the oil...
This came out from Cheney's group, they want us to go to war again !
Yeah I was gonna say, they're dreaming if they think they're gonna see a dime of that. Considering the fact they're mentioning Iran as if we know for a fact they had any real involvement in that, I'm smelling something sinister. I would expect to hear Iraq or Pakistan before connecting Iran to this.
@Zoso It's not like the Taliban, and Al Qaida operate as legitimate business's regulated by any one government. Sounds to me he's the judge is being sympathetic to these folks who are obviously very heartbroken. the reality, the US consumer victim mentality that the govt will protect you, does not apply in other countries. So good luck getting paid.
@Zoso No way, we need to blaim Iran so the American people can get duped into another false war.
@This_again? No kidding. Don't even wanna think about how long this one would last, or even how much it would cost, considering we're still in a crappy economy.
...A federal magistrate judge says al-Qaida, the Taliban and Iran should pay $6 billion to relatives of Sept. 11 victims for aiding in the 2001 terror attacks...
Â
And Iran.
Â
Iran?
Â
Wait. This is the first time I've heard - Iran. Oh boy. I thought the folks who were saying we're lining up for our next war to be with Iran were just tinfoil hat wearing loonies.
Â
Last I heard, 9/11 was but a group of Saudis funded by Afghan warlords, the Taliban and some Saudi and Pakistan interests. But now - Iran 9/11 has joined the 9/11 mantra 9/11 and it was Iran 9/11 not Iraq 9/11 that was partially 9/11 responsible for 9/11 - Iran.
Â
Ugh - not liking where this is going.
@Howard Beale Welcome to the "Tin-Hat Party"
Â
It might not be as hard as one thinks to collect those monies. Iran, Al-Qaida, and the Taliban have investments in this country. All we have to do is seize those funds and properties and let them figure out how much their worth and don't give them ten years to answer.Â
@LongBeachBum They did A LOT of that right after 9/11, but it was individuals suspected of being involved. My question is where did the US put all this $$ and why wasn't it used to pay our national debt?
What are they going to do if they don't pay? Send them to collections? Garnish their wages?Â
@Sovereign Re-sell them.
@Sovereign Sanctions...what a joke (didn't work against nuclear disarming). I just hope China doesn't feel like collecting their US debt anytime soon. We legitimately owe China 1.2 Trillion dollars.
Check is in the mail..... What a waste of time, money, and article space
Those who think we inflicted 9/11 on ourselves are the same people that don't believe we landed on the Moon. They have a conspiracy theory for everything. Chalk them all up to ........ Pure nonsense.
@SEATTLITERON I believe we brought 9/11 upon ourselves, but I do believe we landed on the Moon.  I guess that kinda' throws out your cooky theory about people you don't know, huh?
@Sovereign yep, we absolutely had a hand in ousting the peaceful Shah and promoting the radical Ayatollah. You can thank Jimmy Carter for that and now Obama aka Barry Sotero, did the exact same thing in Egypt when he knew the Muslim Brotherhood would step in, also Libya, and don; forget that, Barry is publicly anti-Israel meaning he favors Palestine...you know, the home front for Hamas.
Peaceful Shah? bwahahaha 4/23/11 âMcCain, on a visit to rebel-controlled eastern Libya on Friday, urged the United States and its allies to increase airstrikes and facilitate weapons deliveries to bolster the insurgent cause, a call for stepped-up interventionâ Do you even know who is really in charge in Egypt? Careful. For you this might be a trick question. As âABC's report identified five different positions Romney has taken on the U.S. mission in Libya this yearâ 10/20/11, maybe you would prefer to pick one or two or maybe even all of those positions. I.e. donât let yourself get cornered anywhere. You are going to need to provide some valid references regarding Obama being âanti-Israelâ.
@Sovereign @SEATTLITERON Same here. Ive watched several independent documentaries, that were also corroberated by engineering non profits, government agency officers, public safety officers, and first responders. I also believe in the moon landing, and I also had a family member on Flight 11
@SEATTLITERON Yeah and those who believe President Nixon was involved in the Watergate Scandal are those who believe that Aliens rule the world and that Lizard People control our minds.Â
And for those who believe that Iraq DIDN'T have "weapons of mass destruction" are psychos because clearly Iraq DID have weapons of mass destruction.
@Patriot No, you just need lots of bullets...lots and lots of bullets.
@OrcasThunder RRRRIIIIIIIIIIGGGGHHHTTT
@DeadRabitz Oh, didn'tyaknow? He shipped them all to his really good buddies in Syria...
@DeadRabitz @FreedomLover That was my point. I was being sarcastic to Seattleiteron because he made a broad fallacy and generalization that consisted of those who believe 9/11 was an inside job also believed that a man did not walk on the moon. But if I were to guess where the WMD's were at, it's here in the states.
@FreedomLover Just out of curiosity.  If Saddam did have wmd's where did they go?  I don't recall anyone finding them.  I sure didn't didn't find them when I was there.
@Patriot North Korea does it every couple of years. Don't feed your population. Starvation is a very common used tactic.
Â
Bosnias and Serbs killed by the 100,000s using plain old weapons. Over 100K died in Tokyo using conventional bombs. Over 30K died in Dresden in one night. Oh you can kill by the bushel with regular weapons, or no weapons at all.
@FreedomLover Hard to kill 100's of thousands of civilians without WMD's
Now all of a sudden Iran is implicated in 9/11...and they talk about it as though it's true.
@Sovereign don't know if they were or not but I wouldn't be surprised.you'd be amazed at what Irans capable of.They aided saddam, and they WILL nuke isreal.
Yeah right...Like this is going to happen
