Mother charged in stabbing death of daughter, 8
DETROIT (AP) — A 26-year-old woman was charged Wednesday with felony murder in the stabbing death of her daughter at their Detroit home just days before the girl's ninth birthday.
The mother, Semeria Greene, was also charged with one count of first-degree child abuse. Greene's four young sons have been turned over to Child Protective Services, police spokeswoman Sgt. Eren Stephens said.
Neighbors called police to the Greene family's apartment just east of downtown in the early hours of Sunday morning. Officers arrived to discover Tameria Greene bleeding and unresponsive on the floor. She had been stabbed in the chest with a knife and was pronounced dead on arrival at a hospital. Semeria Greene was taken into custody.
"This is only the second day of the year and we are charging a parent with a child homicide," said Kym Worthy, county prosecutor. "This case is made even more profoundly sad because today would have been Tameria's ninth birthday."
State child welfare workers have known of problems with the family for at least two years and have unsuccessfully tried to take Semeria Greene's children into protective custody, said Michigan Department of Human Services Director Maura Corrigan. She said an expedited internal review after the death showed that case workers have been trying to protect the children and act on concerns raised by family, friends and neighbors.
"Most recently, DHS petitioned the court Nov. 28, unsuccessfully, to remove Tameria and her siblings from her mother's home," Corrigan said in a statement. She said the department "continued to provide court-ordered counseling services to the family as well as conducting in-home visits, the last of which occurred only two days before Tameria's death."
"We share the grief felt by her loved ones and her community," Corrigan said.
Corrigan's statement didn't include details of the removal requests and the hearings, and spokesman David Akerly said the department would not go beyond what was in the statement.
Tameria's 7-, 4-, 2- and 1-year-old brothers now are in foster care.
The girl's slaying came at the end of a particularly brutal year in Detroit. By Thanksgiving, the city had surpassed the 344 homicides reported in all of 2011. As of Dec. 16, the city had recorded 375 murders.
Mayor Dave Bing was expected to announce and discuss the city's 2012 crime statistics on Thursday.
Greene was scheduled to be arraigned Thursday afternoon in 36th District Court. It wasn't immediately clear whether she had a lawyer.
A conviction on the murder charge carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without parole. The child abuse charge carries a maximum 15-year prison sentence.
A motive for the stabbing was not clear. Police were not releasing details of the case Wednesday, Stephens said.
Neighbor Kimyatta Craigmiles told The Detroit News that she had earlier seen Greene arguing with a man in the complex's parking lot.
Neighbors adorned the family's porch and front door at the Martin Luther King Apartments with balloons and stuffed animals in the girl's memory.

I hope the judge who denied the DHS request to take custody of the children has a hard time sleeping tonight... and for the rest of their lives. Because they denied the request, a little girl is dead.
Well, DHS tried to take the children away, but didn't succeed. NOW it'll come out in the news what happened, under investigation, blah, blah, blah.
Â
DHS/CPS/DSHS really needs to get its act together. They only do things when they FEEL like it and IF they FEEL like it, it's NEVER right. They just care about going to their holiday party and, anyone else NOT of their same financial load gets hosed.
Â
Young mother or not, BOTH parties need to be held responsible, because they BOTH failed.
@ SoTweetie. Have to respond here since the Reply button won't work for me... While I agree this is a horrible tragedy and this woman obviously should not have had custody of these children, not every young person with children is irresponsible. I had four kids by the time I was 25 and loved being a mom. I'm sure my circumstances were most likely different since I was married and was able to be a stay at home mom but I can't imagine ever harming my kids no matter how stressed I was or how frustrating they were being.
..... sigh
Depressing and such a waste. Â
Special place in hell for this idiot.
silent lucidity.
Why doesn't CPS put the children with their father?Â
Â
Hmm...come to think of it, there is no mention of father in this article at all. Wonder why. Â
@lakeview Well, they did try to remove the children from her custody and some wise judge said no.  Somehow I think dad or dads probably aren't any better than she was.
RIP little girl.
Â
As for the mother:
She started popping out children at the age of 17 and had five by the age of 26? I'm 25 and can't imagine sufficiently providing for five additional lives, let alone one. It sounds like everyone tried to intervene but this irresponsible psycho just couldn't be reasoned with.
Â
I say the death penalty should be on the table. She can pay retribution for the four lives she has made the responsibility of the state with her own.Â
@SoTweetie REALLY!? Study your history because families used to have 7+ kids! My dad - one of 12; my mom - one of five; I am one of 9! We did not have riches but we were richer in love and had the necessities of life. Sadly you just don't get that!Â
@raven  @SoTweetie Did you grandparents or parents murder any one of their children or have child protective services involved in the process of raising them? If not then your situation is of no comparison to this one.Â
@the unvarnished truth  @raven No, my comment was based on all the facts in the story. I have no problem with large families that are able to support their offspring. As this story states, people and government officials were attempting to intervene because this woman was an unfit parent.Â
I would charge the court with murder also. They should have been removed long ago. DSHS tried to do there job and was stopped by some idiot in the court. Now the poor child is dead. This didn't have to happen!!!!
Crikey tie her tubes already! Then a noose around her neck the freak, those poor children carrying her damaged DNA around. RIP little girl.....
Good lord. Â Started popping out babies at 17 and managed to get 5 out before she killed one. Â Poor little girl probably led a miserable life. Â Just sad, very sad.
@JusticeSeeker There is nothing wrong with a large family. What IS wrong with this family is the mother clearly should not have had even one child! My family has been large for generations - I am one of 9! People like you just don't get what is really important.
@raven  @JusticeSeeker I don't think anyone is disparaging large families who function normally in society. We just don't read or hear about them unless each generation has a thicker criminal record than the previous one.Â
Â
You may be one of nine this close together, but from reading your posts in here for awhile it's a pretty safe bet your parents raised you responsibly and intelligently, and the neighbors didn't anxiously monitor MamaRaven's belly dreading when the next one of you was baking in the oven so to speak.Â
Â
Come to think of it, if your mom was of the stay-at-home generation and had all of you on her own all day every day (without throttling any of you... Â :^D :^D ) she's an absolute saint!
Far more deserving of national attention and press coverage than these oxygen thieves who occupy the headlines these days.Â
