Obama wins Fla., topping Romney in final tally

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) - President Barack Obama was declared the winner of Florida's 29 electoral votes Saturday, ending a four-day count with a razor-thin margin that narrowly avoided an automatic recount that would have brought back memories of 2000.
No matter the outcome, Obama had already clinched re-election and now has 332 electoral votes to Romney's 206.
The Florida Secretary of State's Office said that with almost 100 percent of the vote counted, Obama led Republican challenger Mitt Romney 50 percent to 49.1 percent, a difference of about 74,000 votes. That was over the half-percent margin where a computer recount would have been automatically ordered unless Romney had waived it.
There is a Nov. 16 deadline for overseas and military ballots, but under Florida law, recounts are based on Saturday's results. Only a handful of overseas and military ballots are believed to remain outstanding.
It's normal for election supervisors in Florida and other states to spend days after any election counting absentee, provisional, military and overseas ballots. Usually, though, the election has already been called on election night or soon after because the winner's margin is beyond reach.
But on election night this year, it was difficult for officials - and the media - to call the presidential race here, in part because the margin was so close and the voting stretched into the evening.
In Miami-Dade, for instance, so many people were in line at 7 p.m. in certain precincts that some people didn't vote until after midnight.
The hours-long wait at the polls in some areas, a lengthy ballot and the fact that Gov. Rick Scott refused to extend early voting hours has led some to criticize Florida's voting process. Some officials have vowed to investigate why there were problems at the polls and how that led to a lengthy vote count.
If there had been a recount, it would not be as difficult as the lengthy one in 2000. The state no longer uses punch-card ballots, which became known for their hanging chads. All 67 counties now use optical scan ballots where voters mark their selections manually.
Republican George W. Bush won the 2000 contest after the Supreme Court declared him the winner over Democrat Al Gore by a scant 537 votes.
The win gave Obama victories in eight of the nine swing states, losing only North Carolina. In addition to Florida, he won Ohio, Iowa, New Hampshire, Wisconsin, Virginia, Colorado and Nevada.

It would be sane if the republican in congress fully recognized the public's desire for issues in WA to be addressed in a bi-partisan fashion and allow efforts to move forward.... although, having watched their behavior in the past, this may be too much to expect. It'll be interesting to see how congress fairs the next time there is an opportunity to turn over and turn out sitting members.
The BEST thing ever, is that there is a collection of quotes going around the internet, of the Republicans right before the election, predicting that Romney would win in a "Landslide" of 302 Electoral Votes" and saying that when Romney won with more than 300 ECs it would be a "decisive win" a "MANDATE!!!" and a "LANDSLIDE!!!" Â Of course, now that the President won by 3million+ votes, and over 100 ECs, suddenly it's not a landslide, nor a mandate. Â The "momentum and surge" by Romney was never real. Â It was something pushed by Fox "news," period. Â They simply underestimated, whether on purpose or not, the motivation of the Pro-Obama voters. They created a narrative on Fox that we were disappointed in Obama, but it wasn't true. Â Â
Â
If you're a Republican you have to ask yourself this: If your Party has to have republican governors purging mainly democrats off of voting lists, and your Elections people make sure that the Democratic precincts have one voting machine for thousands of people, while the republican precincts have tons and no lines, if you have to have your donors put up billboards threatening voters with prison, for fraud (when there have been less than 100 actual voter fraud cases in 10 years,) if you have to rely on the Supreme Court to allow the Koch Brothers, Sheldon Adelson, Karl Rove's Crossroads, and the US Chamber, to spend a billion (really) on Super Pac money (outspending by 80% in outside money) to LOSE.... Â Â Don't you think it's time to CHANGE your party? Don't you think that maybe the old way of doing things with guys like Beck and Limbaugh trying to whip up fake outrage and lies to motivate the republican voters to do the bidding for the billionaires, is outdated? Â At what point do you realize that if the GOP doesn't stop herding people to the polls, instead of inspiring them with ACTION while actually elected, they will never win again unless they can keep everyone else from voting?? Â Think about it. WHAT have your republican reps done while elected, that actually made people want to vote for them? Nothing. Â They spend all their time and your money trying to destroy the Democrats who were elected. Â The GOP needs to start producing or they will be left in the dust. AGAIN. Â You know you're in trouble when your Candidate says that "our campaign doesn't rely on fact checkers" Â That was your first mistake. John Hunstman or someone normal like that, would have probably won or gotten very very close. But you let the tiny Tea Party (which is bought and paid for and created by the John Bircher Babies, Koch Brothers,) co-opt your message and taint the GOP. Â You let crazy people like Glen Beck, be your mouthpieces. Â The normal conservatives need to take the party back or start a new one, because you'll never win again like that. The demographics of America's voters has changed, and you can't stuff us back into the shadows.Â
@DT John Huntsman would have won. Period.Â
The thing is, he could not get the nomination becuase he refused to buy into the GOP echo chamber conspiracy BS.
Â
Obama should have lost this election big time due to the economy still moving sluggisly.Â
And now, the GOP did not loose becuase of democraphics. They lost because they ran an idiot for the white house, and some bigger idiots for Senate and the House.
Â
Â
@DT Wow! You have really been following this stuff - don't often get to read a post that is so informed and filled with the details of what has been going on...thanks for this.
Democracy will cease to exist when you take from those that are willing to work, and give to those who would not.
Â
Thomas Jefferson
Â
@Handsup70 that sound great, excpet there is exactly zero evidence Jefferson ever said that.
Â
And, it is also no sequitor to the election and election results. Â
Despite the talk points conversation, the election was not about people "voting for hand outs."Â
Â
I know that is popular in the GOP echo chambers because it makes them feel good and noble. But it is a stupid talking point.
wow.. zero evidence huh? I guess the holocaust and landing on the moon are still in question too?
Â
Not certain how you can look at stats, facts, and figures and think otherwise, but to each his or her own. One only needs to look at our state for that! 32+ years of hitting your thumb with the heavy "D" hammer should make one realize that they need to move their thumb before they swing it again.
Â
I like your argument though.. For the record, I never voted for Bush either time. I have free thinking and don't follow party lines like a blind sheep. But with that being said the Dems keep on blaming him and Obama has had the wheel for 4 years and nothing has changed.. In fact we're in worse shape.
Â
So while you go one blaming everything over the last 12 years on Bush... Please feel free to give thanks to Reagan for the Clinton years!
Â
Have a nice day! ;o)
Â
well.... that happened.Â
Â
of course it was in no way shape or form related to anything I said.Â
Feel free to protest this too!
Â
"We should insist that if the immigrant who comes here in good faith becomes an American and assimilates themselves to us, they shall be treated on an exact equality with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such person because of creed, birth place, or orgin. But this is predicated upon that person's becoming in every facet an American, and nothing but an American... There can be NO divided allegiance here! Any person that says they are an American, but something else also, isn't an American at all! We have room for but ONE flag, the American flag... We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language... And we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people!

@Handsup70 You're right. Would you tell all the white people in the Red States to stop taking up all the welfare?????  I'm tired of subsidizing the Red States with our Blue State tax donor status.  I mean many if the Red States didn't have the lowest education, worst obesity, highest infant mortality rate, highest divorce rates, worst health and health care, I might consider allowing our taxes to help them. But man.. so tired of subsidizing the lazy white people on welfare in the Red States.  lol.Â
I didn't realize I was making a "RACIST" statement. Quick someone please go spit on TJ's memorial for me!!
Â
Someone should shoot the founding fathers for their notion of being free of a overbearing government and not "enjoying" all the taxation without representation! One should not join the military, put themselves through school, competete for a decent job, save for the future for themselves and that of their children! Those types of people are so insensitive and greedy. They should have to pay for uncontrolled government spending as well as surveys and studies of surveys and studies that have been done 17 times already just to try to find a way to show it's someone else's fault and not their own for poor planning, and poor execution of said plans! Lets not forget that we have next years earmarked budgets coming up. Gotta spend the dough in the coffers otherwise it won't be replenished! And lets not forget the thrill of cutting education, cutting public services, raising your insurance premiums, and taxing your personal gains and property just in order to keep on keeping on!
Â
Yeah.. I'm all about giving a leg up to someone that wants to better themselves. But why must I get out of bed in the morning and do my part for myself and my country when I can live off of the system?
Â
I have the right to quit my job I suppose and then collect welfare, have as many kids as possible to get bigger welfare checks, govenment housing, government healthcare and have an I-phone, a new car, new clothes, and not do anything for it other than say I'm oppressed and that I deserve it.. But then my concious gets the best of me!
Â
On a good note - You are free to marry who or whatever you want in the state of Washington, get totally baked out of your mind, and then munch out all day on government cheese!! I tell ya... We're living the dream aren't we?!

 @RobinsnestÂ
Oh, you read townhall.
I am sorry.Â
Â
how's life in that echo chamber?
@Robinsnest Sure, there was. You just keep telling yourself that.Â
You gotta hand it to Nate Silver @ 538 Blog. He accurately predicted the winner of all 50 states. What does that make his 4th or 5th election that he has absolutely nailed?
Congrats to our U.S. President, his party and the country !!!!
All them illegals wanting to cash in on the welfare!!
@tthunderstorme Â
Gee, I wonder why the GOP struggles with the non white vote? Â
Â
Could it be you have a simplistic, innacurate, and negative attitude towards anyone not just like you? Â
Â
I am betting yes.Â
@tthunderstorme this election was a message that the middle class are sick and tired of people like you who think it's ok to give billions of dollars to the corporations via loopholes and ditto for the wealthiest of our society.  We have lower taxes today than anytime during either reagan or clinton (the last time we had true prosperity).  Get your head out of your butt and get real.
Â
The bush experiment where you take wealth from the middle class and move it to the richest 10 percent of our population is failing and failing miserably.
Â
Government costs money which is derived by taxes. Â This is nothing new but it seems like something people have somehow forgotten.
@sunnysandiego  @tthunderstorme lol no it wasn't, but you keep on with that script. You CANNOT TAX your way out of this problem.
@Gaikokujin If you do not want to be called out for saying stupid things, there is a simple solution.
Â
do not say stupid things.Â
Â
I am not going to waste my time trying to reason with an irrational person who is going to try and arguing against things that no one was suggesting. Â
Â
And no one is suggesting that we raise taxes and not cut revenue.  Obama himself has repeatedly stated that there will need to be cuts in spending.  I am sure you have missed this by living in an echo chamber.  Â
@T H I S Ah how typical of you, always the disrespecting of others with name calling. How "tolerant" of you
@Gaikokujin No one is arguing against spending cuts you dolt.
We have one party... your party... arguing against raising revenue.
Â
One of us is (and has been)Â saying we have to do both... the other has their head up their butts.
Â
how does  that smell?
Â
@T H I S no i am not, i don't dispute that the majority in that "poll" favor higher taxes, but that isn't what I am saying. Those higher taxes need to be accompanied by spending cuts in order to have any at all impact to reduce our deficit. there is just simply not enough money to be brought in via taxes unless we do something about spending. Increase taxes on all americans by 15% 6 years, close all loopholes to individuals & corporations for a mininum of 6 years and reduce spending by 15% for a mininum of 6 years.
@TruthinAdverts  @Gaikokujin  @sunnysandiego  @tthunderstorme "Fox talking point" LOL no it isn't. It has already been proven that you cannot tax your way out of this. Unless higher taxes are accompanied by spending cuts there is no way higher taxes will work !!
 @GaikokujinÂ

Â
so yeah,
you're wrong and he was right
Â
And yeah, your views are in the minortiy.... again.Â
Â
You do realize a broken clock has a better track record than you, right?Â
Â
Â
Â
@Gaikokujin  @sunnysandiego  @tthunderstorme Yet another Fox talking point that doesn't actually mean anything. There's no free lunch... if you want services, you pay for services. That means "taxes". It's up to the American people to decide what level of services they want. The American people voted.Â
mitt couldn't even win florida.
Â
consider this election a warning to you republicans if you don't start putting people first and your stupid agendas after you will continue to lose seats in the house and congress as well you will be watching the changes happen from the outside in .
Â
You want to recover from this economic nightmare start out by taking care of the middle class. Â They are the ones who buy the goods which keep the jobs and the economy going.
Â
Upward movement of money to the richest is the worst thing we can do. Â They don't create jobs they simply reinvest it into themselves which does nothing for the economy except make THEM richer while the rest of the citizens suffer because we now have no revenue to pay our government to keep fighting the wars which the republicans love so much because it helps out their investments.
Â
The other 47 percent spoke to you on Tuesday. Â The question is did you listen or better yet hear what they said.
Â
Time will tell.
Â
@sunnysandiego Mitt also only got only 78% of the mormon vote compared to Bush's 80%Â
Â
@T H I S @sunnysandiego So much for the White Horse Prophesy
