RAINIER, Wash. -- State troopers are investigating a deadly crash in Rainier that comes with a tragic twist.
Donald Moore had just left church and was walking home on the shoulder of SR 507 in Rainier Wednesday night. Just after 9 p.m., troopers say an alleged drunk driver hit and killed him.
Moore's own pastor, Glen Layson, happened to witness the horrific accident and was there to comfort the 58-year-old as he died.
Layson said Moore had just recently begun to turn his life around and had reconnected with his estranged daughter in the weeks before he died.
When Layson found him on the side of the road, he knelt down beside his friend and spoke to him one last time.
"And he let out his last breath, and I said, 'Go into the arms of Jesus,' and he was dead,' Layson said.
The accident happened right in front of Dan Aschenbrenner's hardware store. Aschenbrenner said many accidents have happened in the same area.
"It's something you can't take back," he said. "It's someone's life."
The driver who hit Moore was arrested for DUI and will likely face vehicular homicide charges.
Moore leaves behind his daughter, two dogs and a cat.
A memorial service will be held Sunday at Victory Baptist Church in Rainier. The church is also setting up a memorial fund at a local bank.
