Romney: I care about the poor and middle class

ATLANTA (AP) - Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney told donors Wednesday that he cares about the poor and middle class as he tried to stem criticism and address concern from within his own party over secretly-recorded comments that he doesn't need to worry about the half of the country that doesn't pay federal income taxes.
The White House accused Romney of desperately trying to change the subject from an unauthorized video as its political allies continued to drum up heat over the remarks. The video was a welcome change of subject for Democrats from the campaign's long-running debate over the lackluster economy during Obama's presidency.
Both sides were hoping to break out of their dead heat, with the video upending the debate in the campaign seven weeks to Election Day. In the recording made at a private fundraiser in May, Romney said nearly half of Americans who don't pay federal income taxes believe they are victims and entitled to a range of government support and that as a candidate, he doesn't feel a need to worry about them.
Romney tried to correct any impression that he isn't concerned with average Americans during an afternoon fundraiser in Atlanta attended by Gov. Nathan Deal and other state GOP leaders. "The question of this campaign is not who cares about the poor and the middle class," Romney said. "I do. He does. The question is who can help the poor and the middle class. I can. He can't."
Romney stood by his view of what the government's role should be in Americans' lives.
America "does not work by a government saying, become dependent on government, become dependent upon redistribution," Romney told 900 donors who paid as much as $50,000 to attend. "That will kill the American entrepreneurship that's lifted our economy over the years."
Romney pointed out a video of Obama made in 1998 when the then state senator said he believes in redistribution, "at least to a certain level to make sure everybody's got a shot."
White House spokesman Jay Carney suggested Romney's efforts to push the 14-year-old video were the work of a candidate having "a very bad day or a very bad week."
"In circumstances like that, there are efforts made, sometimes very desperate efforts made to change the subject," Carney said.
Some Republicans running for Congress were quick to distance themselves from Romney's remarks, including Sen. Scott Brown, locked in a tight race for re-election in Massachusetts. "There's a lot of good people out there they're not out there saying, 'Oh boy, I want to be on public assistance.' They're out there struggling to pay the bills and provide for their families."
Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, said she can't explain why Romney would have worded his comments the way he did when he cares about seniors, students and veterans.
"Look, it clearly isn't helpful and it's surprising that a disciplined candidate would make those kind of comments," she said. But she said they were made a long time ago "and clearly were held to release at a critical time, so there's manipulation on the other side, too. But they certainly aren't helpful."
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said he doesn't think voters will turn away from Romney "based on an analysis, ill-conceived analysis at a fundraiser." But the candidate needs to campaign harder in swing states to win the election.
"This is our election to lose," Graham said. "There's a reason no president has ever been elected with economic numbers like this. If Obama wins, he'll be rewriting political history."

Can't wait to see Jon Stewart pummel Bill O'Reilly during their debate!!! It's going to be hilarious!Â

Obama loves the poor, he creates millions of new poor every year.
@crank, statements like this reveals all we need to know about who you are and how you think, but for the people who liked your comment, I have to wonder, are they related to you or do they go to your church, something?
@CrankyPanky And you talk out of your butt with no facts to back it up. But I guess with outlets like Fox, you feel smart for a change. Too bad it's a delusion.
@CrankyPanky Spoken like a true Christian. Wait a minute. The GOP is actually far from a political party that espouses Christian values. FU paupers!  ha ha. Too funny! Obama 2012!
He's pretty much right so he shouldnt be backpedalling. Typical politician. Say what you feel then when people get all butt hurt about it then its "oh I didnt mean it like that". Same Same on both sides. Most people not paying taxes and living on the government dole arent going to vote for him. Obummers their meal ticket and they dont want to lose that. The Dems pizz away money we dont have and the Repubs cant pull their head out of their butts long enough to do anything about it. What a joke this countrys government has become. I wont be showing up to the polls this year for the second time in my life as there is no one worth even voting for anymore. They are all tied to their own special interest groups and are already bought.
@Lord Farquad The fact of the matter is that so-called red states pay less in taxes than the so-called blue states, but receive more in federal payouts than blue states.  Which means that Republicans are the ones feeding at the public trough.  So, I guess I essentially agree with you that Democrats are "pizzing" away money, but the reason the Republicans don't do anything about it is that they don't want their welfare drying up.
@Lord Farquad He's not right. Look at the stats for that 47%, and look at the red states. Get back to us.
The moment one adds seer stones, sacred underpants, the planet Kolob, and a secret handshake required to win admittance into the highest heaven, Mormonism stands revealed for what it is: the religious equivalent of rhythmic gymnastics. Romney is also revealed for what he is, a political windsock..
"Romney: I care about the poor and middle class"
Â
Yeah...it shows. [eye roll]
Â
Get lost, arrogant p[beep].
@Sovereign I'm still giggling over the "It wasn't eloquently stated" backpedal. Nope, sure wasn't, buddy. It's those private moments where you think nobody is listening (or at least, nobody who might not be totally on your side) where your true feelings tend to come out unguarded. "Off the cuff" comments, even if they're intended as jokes, tell a lot more about a person's attitude than the best-prepared speeches.
Â
I'm glad he at least had the sense to own up to what he said, and not try to make it seem like "Oh, I didn't say that" or "That's totally out of context". But it's going to be interesting to watch him try to dig himself out of that hole he got himself into. He has nobody to blame for that but himself.
Looks like I woke up in Seattle again.
Â
Same ole passive aggressive tripe from those that choose not to educate themselves.
@bobalouie I agree. But on the bright side, the GOP is a dying party. Thank God!!!!Â
@bobalouie You woke up and looked in the mirror huh?
"I care about the poor and middle class" Too little too late, Romney stepped in schit and stuck his foot in his mouth.
The guy is so utterly transparent we can see his twisted little soul. Please remember that those huge bailouts "tarp" the big bank bailouts etc were George W Bushes machinations for his buddies. The GM bailout was Obama's doing and GM is paying back those loans. All the banks did with that money that W gave them was steal it and payed huge bonuses to the big wigs.
Romney cares for Romney and his offshore accounts. Romney doesn't care about the middle class or Bain wouldn't have tore apart and sold off companies laying untold thousands of people off.
Romney could give a rats ass about all the working people in America. I think the recent leaked video and audio tells the tail. Romney claims they were taken out of context. not much chance of that. Remember, the GOP is the master of audio, video and sound byte manipulation and deceit.
Our president is 100% completely lost without his teleprompter and is obviously lost with current foreign policy and economy issues.
The only thing he's done is pay off the people who got him elected and bribe others. (Just like our Seattle public schools work). The 800 B. stimulus was predicted to fail by many, and easily has.
Â
Romney needs to stress that having desire and commitment to success would still be possible under his administration and cabinet.
Our pop culture country seems to be more than willing to give up any freedom...just to have someone else take care of our every need. Sad, but that is what freedom without sacrificing has done to more and more us.

@brewzbrothers The problem with the stimulus, according to most economists, is that it wasn't big enough.
Â
And brewz, do yourself a favor. Do a google images search for the following terms: "Romney teleprompter", "Sarah Palin teleprompter", "John McCain teleprompter", "George Bush teleprompter", "Ronald Reagan teleprompter" . After you do that, maybe you can grow up and offer some researched, fact based, cited observations.
@WhatRJDid Sarah teleprompter? I thought she just wrote a bunch of stuff on her hand, up her arm, down her blouseâ¦. ummmâ¦. well up her leg ummmâ¦.. well never mind. I might be back later.

 @WhatRJDid Â
I am watching the president of the US fail. I would hope when the shizzle hits the nizzle our president won't be a complete lost soul. Let's focus on the leader of the free world and his inability to process until someone more able is elected.
Â
The stimulus (according to your guys at "the stranger" maybe) wasn't big enough! The last thing the executive branch of government needs is to give more money to political buds.Â
Â
Don't take Obama's failure personally. I honestly think most liberals mean to do well. Liberalism works so much better when you are the victims and not leading with a limp wrist.
You folks just have this drive to be morally superior that falls flat... and doesn't register in factual minds.
Â
Happy Wednesday to you, Cheers!
@brewzbrothers I am watching you delete your comments when you're proven to be full of nothing but nonsense, then posting more follow up tripe. Why not have the intellectual honestly to look yourself in the mirror and try a little intellectual self improvement?
Flip... flop... flip... flop... etch-a-sketch doesn't work so well when YouTube is in the house.
I wonder how much the 50 million on food stamps pay in taxes?
@CrankyPanky Go to a red state and find out.
@WhatRJDid what difference does it make what state they are from?
 @flyskiwindsurf  @WhatRJDid Well done!
@WhatRJDid Perhaps that is at least one of many reasons why many of the red states get more federal dollars back than they pay in while the reverse is true for many of the blue states. I.e. many blue states are subsidizing many red states and/or Obama supporters are subsidizing all of those free loading robmoney supporters. Similar to WA where most blue counties are subsidizing most red counties. Maybe that is actually why the red states and red counties are really red. E.g. the red states and counties are really a bunch of socialist commies in disguise.
@WhatRJDid OK how many of the stupid dupes in the red states that are on food stamps pay in taxes. Is that better for you?
@CrankyPanky Because the red states, the strongest republican states, are the ones with vastly higher welfare and food stamp rolls. They also have the highest rates of poverty, of course, teen pregnancy, and poor educational outcomes. How is that conservative ethic working for them there?
I believe he cares, but his backpedaling is not as fast as Obama's so it mean a loss! Don't ever open your mouth when there is a mike around......who did the secret taping??????????
nice spelling........sorry!
What's truly the height of irony in his statements about how all these people who supposedly don't pay taxes are lazy and unwilling to take personal responsibility is the fact that his and Ryan's tax reform plan calls for eliminating the capital gains tax, effectively reducing his own taxable income to zero.
Â
In short, Romney is calling out what he hopes for his own future as personally irresponsible. On this point, and this point only, I agree with him.Â
Meanwhile - Republicans just shut down the Veterans Jobs Bill.
Â
Â
@NoKitty666 I'm glad they killed it, it was just another grow government bill thought up by patty murry.
@CrankyPanky So you are glad they killed a bill that would help our service members, nice.
Â
If you can't stand behind our troops, feel free to stand in front of them.
@WhatRJDid  @CrankyPanky And a veteran commits suicide every 80 minutes, that is 18 a day, 547.5 a month or 6570 a year. Many veterans only feel more hopeless when they are unable to find employment after returning from deployment. How many of these suicides could have been prevented with this bill?

@CrankyPanky  @alaska_dreamin Are you aware that the unemployment rate for our vets is 35% higher than the national average? These guys go off to wars and they can't find jobs.
Â
I'm convinced you're a troll. A conservative would at least pretend to give a crap about our veterans. Shame on you, regardless.
@CrankyPanky You are not only obviously uninformed, delusional, of low intelligence, and delirious but you are also obviously arrogant, conceited, and egoistical beyond all belief. Obviously. hmmmâ¦. Oh it seems that just means that you are just some snot nosed 12 year old. Obviously.
@CrankyPanky Well then I guess Mittens is the perfect candidate for you, since he doesn't give a < expletive deleted> about our troops either.Â
@alaska_dreamin If I live long enough I'm. sure I'll have to. These guys can jobs on there own no need to build another dependent class.
@CrankyPanky  @NoKitty666 Our troops certainly appreciate you, I'm sure.
@NoKitty666 Both parties are responsible for bad voting! Stop pointing fingers at one party both are guilty of hurting this country!
@mustang sally I could agree with you on many bills that have been unsucessful--but in this case, it was all Republicans. The bill lost by 2 votes, and all 40 of those voting against it were Republicans.  Yet, these are the same people who 'stand behind our troops' with utmost passion...so far .I can't say I'm convinced they are sincere.Â
 @NoKitty666
Sad and disgusting, but totally unsurprising. The GOP loves to rally around the troops as long as they're in uniform, but as soon as they're separated from the service, screw em. Just look at how many times they've tried to slash the VA's budget. It's kind of like how they love to howl that banning abortion is all about protecting children while simultaneously gutting programs designed to help kids. While they're in the oven, they're precious, but as soon as the turkey timer pops out, they're on their own.
@Mikeftm  @NoKitty666 The GOP treats vets the same as embryos. Once you're born kid, you and your family are on your own.Â
@NoKitty666 They even helped write it. It goes to show you where their priorities are. They can shout jobs, jobs, jobs all they want but when it comes right down to it they won't do anything. They are afraid of giving Obama any credit but all they are doing is discrediting themselves.
@NoKitty666 Didn't you know? We have trillions of dollars to spend on 2-3 wars we don't need but we are bankrupt when it comes to middle class entitlements, etc..... And Romney wants to increase military spending! Absolute craziness!!!Â
Â
Lies and more lies we are being fed!!!Â
@HallandOates  @NoKitty666 How much has obama cut military?
KOMO, my post violated none of your commenting rules. It was deleted purely for political reasons. I would think that an outfit that considers themselves a "news" organization would be interested in the truth, so I will try again.
Â
Due to the mainstream media's continuing attacks on Romney for his "lack of concern for the poor and middle class" it is only fair to point out that Mitt Romney donated $5 million to charity last year and to ask how much Obama donated? Furthermore it is fair to point out that a president who contunually states that he wants to help the poor and middle class in this country, and whose net worth is estimated at $12.5 million does not help his own brother that lives in a ramshackle hut on the outskirts of Nairobi, Kenya and lives on one dollar a month. It is also fair to point out that president Obama has an aunt named Zeituni Oyango that lives on welfare and in public housing in Boston, again without any help from the president. Why should we expect Obama to help the poor and middle class in this country when he apparently won't even help his own family? Â
Â
  http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/barackobama/2590614/Barack-Obamas-lost-brother-found-in-Kenya.html
@ByeByeBarry Wow, you must be one of the few who have seen his latest tax returns if you know that. Of course, by conating to 'charity', you do know that's pretty just the Mormon church, right? And we all know how their money helps the economy--going to the fight against same-sex marriage. And where are your facts that you claim it is so fair to assume? Do you really know that the President has not helped out his family? I doubt if that would show up on a tax return, so what's your source? I would be more inclined to say it is fair to assume, that you are working off of some 'facts' based upon fantasy.
@ByeByeBarry Obama has NEVER been for the poor what he does is promote social programs that only cost us more tax dollars. He has supported big banks too. He is only out for himself and no one else matters. It's too bad the sheep continue to follow his promises which he does not keep!
@mustang sally You appear to have been spending way too much time trying to herd way too many sheep with your mustang Sally. Guess you better slow your mustang down and put your flat feet back on the ground there Sally.
@Darn it! By the horse, the sheep, and/orâ¦.?
@flyskiwindsurf  @mustang I think she got bucked off and kicked in the head a few too many times.
@mustang sally  @ByeByeBarry What social programs? Do tell! With links, please.
@ByeByeBarry
Well lets see; in 2011, President Obama's reported earnings were $790,000, and he paid $162,000 in taxes, and he and Michelle donated $172,000 to charity. That donation figure was about 22% of their total gross income. His tax percentage was about 20% also.
Â
Your boy Mit Romney earned $21 million, and his tax rate after adjustments was about 14%.Over a period of SEVERAL years, did he donate approximately $5,000,000 dollars to charity, the bulk if it $4,325,000 to the Mormon church, about $300,000 to BYU, and various other mormon church related charities.
Â
His aunt, was living in public housing, but as of now appears not to be. She was also granted citizenship not long ago, and is also no longer on welfare or public assistance. Now, if you wish to speak of his brother, maybe you should have read what he had to say about what you are attempting to argue (link below). Even more pathetic, is that your link you cited is from 2008; the one I found is current as of 2012.
You conservatives are so easy, you come in with your screennames, usually anti-obama related, and attempt to skew and distort facts. Keep trying homie.

@ByeByeBarry "my post violated none of your commenting rules"
No, but it does lower the intelligence of everyone reading it.
Â
What does Obama's borther living in a shack in Nairobi have to do with Romney saying stupid things?
Â
What does Obama's Aunt being on welfare have to do with the fact that Romney himself was on welfare as a child?
Â
What does the fact that Romney had to amend his taxes (the only taxes he released) so he could "make up" the 10% donation that he shorted the Mormon church?
Â
What does any of this have to do with the fact that Mitt Romney insulted a giant cross section of this country and still does not have the courage to release his tax forms to prove he is not one of that 47% not paying any income taxes?Â
Â
Oh yes, absolutely nothing because your entire post was one giant pile of typical right wing deflection.
Â
And i trust Obama over Romney  to care for the middle class because
A) Obama has been trying to, but has been blocked by the republicans time and again.
B) Romney has made repeated comments to demonstrate that he is completely out of touch with the middle class
and
C) These are the conditions Romney thinks people should work in:
