San Diego restricts beach use after people caught punching, kicking seals
SAN DIEGO (AP) — San Diego's mayor has ordered a two-month nighttime shutdown of a beach after cameras set up to monitor a seal colony captured people kicking, punching and sitting on top of mother seals and their pups.
Mayor Bob Filner said in a statement Tuesday that the La Jolla (HOY'-uh) beach known as Children's Pool will be closed between sunset and sunrise until May 15.
The 24-hour "seal-cam" was introduced in January and equipped with night vision so researchers and the public could watch the seals give birth during pupping season.
But the camera captured people abusing and harassing the seals and driving them from their resting places.
The beach has been the center of a long legal fight over human access versus seal protection.

What the hel*? Â What is WRONG with people?? Â I lived in La Jolla while I was in college and spent a lot of time at the beach. Â I can tell you that some of the sea lions that lie around on those rocks could do some serious damage if provoked. Â I can only hope one of them goes Cujo on the as*es of these morons.
If the seals were up here they would be shot for eating the salmon.

shut down the beach 24/7 until the seals are finished giving birth. Â The people who do this type of thing are not the kind of people who read the news...so they will never really know people's opinions. Â Sadly, we are a species that has little regard for other species. Â We need change. Â
