Supreme Court will hear campaign donation limits appeal

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Supreme Court will hear a challenge to campaign finance laws limiting how much an individual can give to political campaigns.
The justices on Tuesday decided to hear an appeal from Shaun McCutcheon of Alabama and the Republican National Committee. They are arguing that it's unconstitutional to stop a donor from giving more than $46,200 to political candidates and $70,800 to political committees and PACs.
McCutcheon says he accepts that he can only give $2,500 to a single candidate but says he should be able to give that amount to as many GOP candidates as he wants.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia upheld the limits, but the high court decided to review that decision.

The GOP again ... "if we can't win fairly," they asserted, "then we can buy it!"
@Ben Ezzell If he was the head of any Union he could give as much as he wanted in the Union's name and that is OK with the way the rules are writen. You think a Union or corperation should have more say then the people?? Then you have judge him because he is a Republican and there for he must be bad... Liberals and thier double standards...
@bustedupredneck Actually, I don;t believe that anyone should be given that access to influence -- REGARDLESS of political party. Further, I do not believe that corporations are persons (not until we can arrest, try and execute one or more). However, the fact remains -- although you would prefer to ignore this -- it the GOP who are doing it ... and it's also very typical of the Teapublkicans.
@Ben Ezzell The Democrats are just as bad.
We all can see what has happened when money can buy the politicians and they give back special perks to some people. If you have any drought just look at the US tax code and how many pages it takes to print it. WE HAVE THE BEST GOVERNMENT MONEY CAN BUY. Â Just think of the good the money that was spent on the last election could of done.
@swan Nah... It's easier to continue down the same path.... Something like the definition of insanity... doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome...
I wish they would ban all political tv ads. They are usually nothing but distortions if not outright lies. All political parties included.
@Darn it! Term limits.... special interest groups...... lobbying....... so much BS it would take lifetimes for SCOTUS or others to pull their heads out and make positive changes...
@Funky-Munky Lobbiests and political ads can be flushed down the same crapper.Â
@Darn it!  :D) still chuckling....Â
Notice the plaintiffs... the REPUBLICAN national committee.  HMMMMMMMM
@EMDF9A Would it have been any better if the plaintiffs had been the DEMOCRATIC national committee?
@Furd @EMDF9A The Democrats do not need to raise the indaviduals personal limit. They have the Unoins with their unlimited giving ability. They just do not want the people to have that big a voice.
I know its not possible but...
How about we eliminate ANY financing restrictions BUT take the number of votes and multiply by the inverse fraction of the total dollars each candidate spent? Candidate Cheatem spends 60% of the total dollars and Candidate Grifter spends 40%.  Multiply Cheatum's total by 40% and Cheatum's by 60% and voila, you have a winner. Candidates will fight to spend less money, not more.
@Getov Mylon  I like the way you think....  :D)
@Funky-Munky @Getov Mylon I like the idea someone else stated of taxing all political contributions.Â
@Furd @OrcasThunder @Darn it! @Funky-Munky @Getov Mylon  Me too...
@OrcasThunder @Darn it! @Funky-Munky @Getov Mylon I'd be happy if politicians were limited in just receiving contributions from people living within their own districts.
@Darn it!@Funky-Munky@Getov Mylon"taxing all political contributions. "
At twice the normal rate...
PACs and super PACs need to be outlawed. When our country has gotten to a point where it costs in excess of a billion dollars to run for president, we have gone way off the deep end of who is truly being represented. It sure isn't the "average" American!
