US officials say 2 warships moving toward Libya

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Pentagon ordered two warships to the Libyan coast in the aftermath of the attack in Benghazi that killed the U.S. ambassador and three others, U.S. officials said Wednesday.
One destroyer, the USS Laboon, moved to a position off the coast Wednesday, and the USS McFaul is en route and should be stationed off the coast within days. The officials said the ships, which carry Tomahawk cruise missiles, do not have a specific mission. But they give commanders flexibility to respond to any mission ordered by the president.
Pentagon spokesman George Little said: "Without commenting on specific ship movements, the United States military regularly takes precautionary steps when potential contingencies might arise in a given situation. That's not only logical in certain circumstances, it's the prudent thing to do."
There have been four destroyers in the Mediterranean for some time. These moves will increase that to five.
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss troop movements.

USS Laboon reach out and touch someone! =)
I have a few tomahawk hallmark cards for ya IRAN!
Use them to wipe out Iran's nuclear facilities!!
Someone had better let Mitt know in advance that it looks like Obama intends to apologize with cruise missiles before he goes off half-cocked again.
@left-center Not sure what good a bunch of randomly aimed cruise missiles will do to bring four dead guys back. When the media starts asking why there was not a US Marine security detachment in one of the most volatile cities in the world for our consulate (you know, the sort of thing a competent C-in-C that understands the region COULD HAVE done), I'll believe they are not actively shilling for him. Not saying we shouldn't launch a few, but doing so just so you can have a photo-op of doing something isn't leadership. It's delusional incompetence and crude politics.
@left-center Your handle says it all.
Level the mo*********
Wow The first thing I seen in my mind when I read this story was Steve McQueen running with his rifle in his sailors whites in Pebbles on the beach. That was a movie this is not, damn crazy world we are living in right now Peace and love to all.
So we are sending ship to what? Get the people out of the embassies? That would make sense, otherwise who are you going to shoot at?
@Grumpa  It's a militaristic statement...come on, we've done this before, people. I'm pretty sure if North Korea sent some of its navy to our coastline, we'd take it seriously. Parking two destroyers at a country's doorstep is as good a way to send a message as any.Â
Unfortunately, many Islamic nations will never understand that OUR Government allows individuals to speak as they wish ESPECIALLY with regards to religious beliefs and practices.
Â
If you don't "like" the words or images, don't watch or listen!
Â
We certainly aren't going to go and arrest and execute everyone who may or may not blaspheme someone's deity. Regardless of how angry you may be.
Here we go, going into another war we can't afford right now!
@Zoso Agreed, but it makes no difference at Ambassador level agreements. We are bound as a nation to enforce any headway he's made for our nation. Our agendas don't die with the representative, and those are based in need.
@Zoso Who said anything about a war?  It's called Department of DEFENSE!  Apparently, you're perfectly alright with our own being killed in our embassies.
@aol8mydog I'm alright with our own embassy being killed? Sounds like you're even more perfectly alright putting words in other people's mouths!
You fellas got to know you catch more flies with sugar than bitter salt ..... sometimes... the best weapon is your mind and wit..... give that some thought.... who was that wise fella that said.... know your enemy....

This happens every time the US wants a puppet state. We knock out the "bad" leader, let everything turn to civil war, and use that as our reason to install our puppet and there is never peace there again until they can kick the US out. Happens everytime and its what is happening in lybia and BTW, Syria, Obama has hired al-Queda to ruin the peace that exisits between two factions that neither one will cow tow to the US. We have been sending this kind of destruction into the middle east, china, and later on in viet nam since the '50s.
Â
You people must be kidding me, I just cant believe that citizens of the US dont even understand this crap yet. Did you really think you were just there spreading democracy or the financial aid was to help people? How can you spread democracy with your bought off representation? You dont have any democracy, just the rich do. What you want for your country, you cant have because money speaks louder to the politicians then you. The US has been spreading this death and destruction to innocent families of the world for 5 decades plus and everytime it winds up failing and getting millions killed when we finally turn tail and run as in the carnage that took place in So viet nam and cambodia when we ran and left the north to murder 5 million asians. And all of this murder has been in the name of profits.
Â
Now go live with it. They dont hate you for your "freedom", they hate you for the murders of innocent people world wide and your ignorance to the facts.
They should be headed to the coast of Delaware =)

@Star Shooter I'm sorry Star you don't get the sarcasm. The post was directed towards the informed members on the site =)
Just stay out no point in getting involved in another area.
@Kugan Too late for that. I would love to see Europe and Israel fight their own wars for once.Â

@Sydthepiper ...or "one B1B bomber loaded with 86 500lb bombs can ruin your whole day." That's my favorite saying.

@HallandOates  @I Like Meat  @Sydthepiper And who exactly would you bomb? Sounds like a whole lot of pissing tax money away.
Que for Myth Romney and the republicans to come out and accused Obama of being an over agressive war monger by dragging us into another military conflict in 3.....2......
Â
oh yeah, and because this picture can not be seen enough

Â
actual picture of Mitt Romney walking away from his press conference with a smirk on his face
http://pbs.twimg.com/media/A2mXBxCCcAAywvk.jpg:large
@T H I S  I see the pictures but I don't know what the context is--when/where? This is after the killing of the diplomats?
@plantfann Those pictures posted above were from Romney's press conference this morning. They have been widely circulating the net forums, facebook, etc,and have become a Meme of sorts.  And,
they have been verified.
The photographer was Charles Dharapak with the AP
here is the original tweet he put out
http://twitter.com/CharlesDharapak/status/245893711257563136/photo/1
Â
You can say what you want about everything that happened, but this is an actual picture of a man running for president who just gave a press conference about the killing of a US diplomat, and he has a smile on his face. Â
Â
Now, the very honest question is... why is he smiling? Â
Â
Â
Â
@T H I S They blame President Obama for any and everything. It's pitiful. The dying GOP!Â
Oh man, you're right. It's all Bush's fault. obama did nothing wrong.
Â
Nothing right either.
@HonkeyCat I'm glad you think President Obama's order to commence the mission which led to Osama Bin Laden's death wasn't right. Even if you didn't vote for him, that alone, was worth his four years.
 @HallandOates  @T H I S It called "TAKE RESPONSIBILITY"
@T H I S No better than the DNC disrespecting our Vets.
Â
http://www.navytimes.com/news/2012/09/navy-dnc-update-apology-russian-ships-democratic-convention-091212
@Tacobender 49Yeah, that was pretty stupid of the democrats.
But I have a simple question:
Â
Are you honestly suggesting that the dems screwing up a photo op with a warship is the same as a man running for president, and smiling during and after a press conference about the killing of US diplomats because he thinks he is scoring some political points?
Â
Your entire post is a mix of false equivalency and deflection because you are trying to change the subject to something that is not even comparable.
Â
Why can't you either stand up and say you are proud of the way Mit Romney handled this or man up and admit he could have done a better job?
Â
Â
@Tacobender 49  @T H I S As a former squid I find respondents in the navy times acting like freeper idiots more troubling than a few wrong pix in a backdrop.
I'm a Vet. 23 years. And I agree with you my Taco friend.
Â
Â
@Tacobender 49  @T H I S As a US Vet, I resent your comments. I know for a fact many veterans such as myself also support President Obama. Veterans are certainly not all republicans as some would lead you to believe.Â
@Antistatism  @HallandOates  @Tacobender 49 That is not for you to say. You are not the end all, be all, of those that took the oath and what it means to them. A touch narcissistic are we? No wonder you like Mittens...
Â
Also, whether or not the prez takes his oath in a way to your liking is an opinion. And only that. As far as your elitist leanings - that pretty much says it all about neocons. If every republican president was was an actual defender of the Constitution - they might have not said things like " The Constitution is standing in my way" - G. Bush.
Â
Â
@Antistatism You're ridiculous as usual.
@Audio Cat  @HallandOates  @Tacobender 49 To be clear I meant retired vets not active duty personal.
Â
"And now you pretend to speak for all vets that took the oath" I speak for vets that take the oath very seriously even after retirement. Voicing support (Nothing to do with following orders) for a president that openly disrespects the office, the oath he took and the constitution it defends is in direct conflict with the very oath you took and supposedly take very seriously.
Â
As far as that fence, you go ahead and just stay on the other side of it with Obama and the other Progressives. Only defenders of the constitutional republic belong on the inside =)
@HallandOates  @Tacobender 49 I'm talking about retired vets not active duty personal. Taking orders while active duty is one thing. Voicing support for a person that disrespects the same oath, office and the constitution it defends after one has retired form active duty is totally different in my opinion.
@HallandOates  @Antistatism  @Tacobender 49 HallandOats, you are a boldface liar, you said in previous threads that military planes flew beneath the Deception Pass bridge, no way, i gave you a chance to respond and you didn't and you also said that  planes crashed in the columbia gorge?  Quit making up stories and join reality.
@RN1 Also, sinc you brought up "fiscal conservative," here is something to ponder when you want to step out of the echo chamber.
Â
When Clinton win in 1992, I was pretty pissed. I voted for Perot, but I lived in Texas which Bush Carried. And I voted for Perot becuase I carred about the debt then when it was only around 3 trillion. Â
During the first 4 years of Clinton, I acted kinda like you guys and said stupid things like you guys.
"tax and spend" "Big Government Liberal Elite"Â "Socilist" etc...
I actively campaigned for republicans in Texas from 1992-2000 for state and us congressmen and senators.
Then in 2000-2001, a funny thing happened.
the deficit was going away. We were down to an 17-18 billion dollar deficit in 2000, and 2001 was projected to be surplus.Â
On top of that, the debt was projected to be gone by the end of the decade.
Think about that. the whole Debt was to be paid off in ten years.
Â
Then Bush took office. The first thing he did was pass a giant tax cut and that projected surplus ended up with deficit.Â
Then there was mediare part D
Then there was a war in iraq.
By the end of Bush's office we went from 5.5 trillion dollars in debt, to 10 trillion, and a projected surplus, to a 1.4 trillion dollar deficit.Â
Â
So tell me again which party is the "fiscally responsible" one. Becuase I can't tell anymore
Â
Â
@RN1 Congradulations, you just proved my entire point about todays republicans not living in reality.
Â
First, I have seen no signs of Obama being a "clueless, delusional, narcisistic Marxists"
Secondly, I have seen no signs of Romney being.... anything honestly. He has contradicted himself so many times no one can honestly say where he stands on anything.Â
Â
Now if you want to step out of your echo chamber, and look at things with some objectivity, you will see that Obama is far from perfect, but I will say this.
He at least has "impulse control," which is missing from teh republican base. And it was missing from Romney when he held that press conference.  Â
Â
I have said over and over that during the 70s and 80s, and even into the 90s, I could spot the liberal because they were the angry whiney irrational one in the group.Â
Now, it is how I can spot the conservative in the group. I do not know exactly when or how this happened, but reading your sad attempt at a rational post, just re-affirmed that view.
Â
What is really sad is how you (or some other republican party hack) will accuse me of "drinking kool-aid" "having my eyes closed" or falling for "lame stream media"
Â
Â
I read news from at lest 20 different web sites with all kinds of views from far left (wonkett and Kos) to far right (Breibart and American thinker)
And I also read the comments on these sites, and one thing has become clear.
The republican base is no longer "conservative," and you guys will build the narrative that you are the only ones who know what is going on, you're not. You are too busy yelling at an empty chair.
Â
Â
@Star Shooter@audiocat So you'd rather a clueless, delusional, narcissistic, Marxist than a fiscal conservative when we are going bankrupt, and major social-con stuff isn't on the menu, even though you claim a more conservative voting record? Weird.
 @AntistatismÂ
Are you suggesting that the vets did not support progressives like Teddy Roosevelt or even Eisenhower?Â
Are you saying that the vets did not support the king of progressives,  Franklin Roosevelt during World War two?Â
Â
I just lost more faith in humanity after reading that stupid comment of yours.
@audiocat " So there you have it, it wasn't necessarily the shortcomings of any candidate, because they both have them, that flipped my 1 percent, it was the followers."
That has turned me more than anything. My presidential voting record is
Reagan
Bush
Perot
Dole
Bush
Bush
(no vote in 2008)
I wasn't going to vote for a Democrat, and I wasn't going to put Sarah Palin anywhere near the white house.
Â
This year , I will be voting for Obama this year. I'd vote for Romney, and he personally does not scare me. What scares the hell out of me are the tea party evangelical right wingers who are angry and freaking out about how the world is changing. They have a nostalgia for an America that never existed, and they have created an image of Obama that does not represent anything in reality.
Â
It is this combination of fear mixed with an inability to live in the real world that terrifies me, and Romney has seemed more than willing to play to them.
Â
Â
@Antistatism  @HallandOates  @Tacobender 49 And now you pretend to speak for all vets that took the oath. I took the oath very seriously - still do. And I support the president, because.. wait for it - he's the president!
Â
Something the Pubbys forgot after the last election.
Â
I was on the fence a little about which way to throw my support, in terms of the two parties, but after listening to all the dangerous and poisonous rhetoric from the Right - It changed my mind. So there you have it, it wasn't necessarily the shortcomings of any candidate, because they both have them, Â that flipped my 1 percent, it was the followers.
Â
Followers like you. Good job.
@HallandOates @Tacobender 49 @T H I S
Tacobender, you are a petty little person and troll. You site the Navy Time only make you look foolish-did you read the article.
Dr Biden and First Lady Obama has and will continue to support military families. They have dedicated thier agenda to thje military. The President as fought for these troops more than any other in recent history.
Â
As a veteran myself, I don't want your support!
@Tacobender 49 @HallandOates @T H I SÂ Like spending his Vietnam War Mormon exemption time in France.
@HallandOates  @Tacobender 49  @T H I S Yeah cuz that's why most military presidential donations went to Ron Paul in the last two election cycles.
I don't support the guy currently in the white house. He wants to rebuild the U.S. from the ground up. Sounds ominous to me.
@Antistatism  @Tacobender 49 Are you friggin kidding me? Really? Appalling to say such a thing. Any vet that doesn't support and carry out the orders as handed down to him by the Commander in Chief simply should be booted immediately from active or reserve duty. It's a privilege to serve, not a right. That's how that is handled.
Â
When I was in, we had some POS that wanted to take over the aircraft carrier and who suddenly became a muslim when enroute to the Persian Gulf. He should have been shot on site.Â
 @HallandOates  @T H I S Your wrong.
Â
Romney may not have, but others at the RNC did.Not to mention Romney talked to American Legion the day before.
@HallandOates  @Tacobender 49  "support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic"
Vets that take the oath seriously don't support Progressives like Obama....Period!!
@Tacobender 49  @T H I S You can believe what you want my friend. Are the same vets offended by no mention at the Republican Convention of the Afghanistan war going on and the veterans that are serving?  You know, the longest war we've ever had.
@HallandOates  @T H I S I will guarantee the majority of Vets are offended by the DNC lack of respect for that video. You are the minority.
 @Tacobender 49  @T H I S "No better than the DNC disrespecting our Vets."
Â
So as a vet, you realize you don't speak for all veterans correct?Â
 @HallandOates  @T H I S Being a Vet doesn't give you a free pass.I'm also a Vet!So what gives?Â
