WWII vet kills would-be burglar with single shot

VERONA, Kentucky -- In World War II, Earl Jones defended his country. On Monday night the 92-year-old veteran had to defend his own home.
"I heard 'tack, tack' down in the basement," said Jones, whose farm has been the target of multiple burglaries. "I said 'somebody's down there,' so I got my gun. I was sitting right here and I heard him on the steps."
Jones waited with his .22-caliber rifle until the intruders were just on the other side of his basement door.
"He kicked the door and as soon as he got inside it was all over," Jones said.
Jones fired a single round and hit 24-year-old Lloyd Maxwell in the chest. Police say Maxwell was carried off by two other intruders. They put him in a car and took off, stopping down a country road to call 911.
Kirk Schneider lives along the road and said he saw the group near his neighbor's yard after they stopped.
"My neighbor was checking on the other kid in the car that I guess got shot. He took his pulse and said he's dead," Schneider said.
Prosecutors say Jones will not face charges in Maxwell's death. The other men involved in the break-in have been charged with burglary and tampering with evidence.

Last year, I trained a lifelong anti-gunner, who is a lifelong friend of mine, on how to shoot firearms. I never dreamed that he would ever acquire a gun, but he was given some bad recommendations before contacting me. I am a .45 ACP man, myself, but I knew that this round would deafen him inside his house, and he is into music, and always has been. The last thing he needs is severe tinnitus. So, I set him up with a Ruger .22 LR with future plans to upgrade if he feels the need. I am also a Distingusihed Life Member of NRA.
Â
He was a "natural," always hitting the black in the center, and frequently hitting the X. We practiced at 21 feet, but he was able to blow the center of the target out at 25 yards! Nearly everyone underestimates the .22 LR. as a defense round. He can sleep now, but is always "right-reaction-ready."
Where are the .45 vs. 9mm people when you need em? .22 gets 'er done haha
Shouldn't this be a minimum of home invasion rather than burglary? The occupant of the dwelling was certainly home at the time of forced entry.
Yep! During the big war the army boys were taught to not waste their ammo. Looks like this old man still remembers what the sarge told him. While I feel just a little teeny bit bad for the crooks family. I love this story!
4 cents and one dead thug. Good economy. Why aren't they charged with felony murder. They committed a crime and somebody died.
There we go!
Now that's proper gun control.
Just goes to show that a shot to the center of mass is usually the best type of shot.
Look Here, America! Just a bit of true instant accountability demanded justifiably by a regular American who is only capable of one regular vote that has the same power as any other. No 'superpowered' ruling class Congressman's vote required for one American to demand accountability from another. No Supreme Court 'superpowered' ruling class Justice's vote needed. We got big problems in America, but they are ALL the same damn issue. No accountability. But big businesses are corrupting everything, we all been whining for decades. No they haven't. People are. The living entity 'rights' of businesses needs to DIE. Why? Because an Article of Incorporation can't even be legally imprisoned for the living entity criminality it has come to represent due to the actions of the ACTUAL living entities running it. But we must prepare for a 2012 election where once again, the GOP will try to take the popular vote away from the people again with "electorate college" 'superpowered' votes as in the Cheney presidency and three others in our history. Except that no electorate college student ever asked any American who they wanted for President if they weren't trying to sell their 'superpowered' vote. I have no idea who the names of these punk criminal wannabes think they are, but in America, we are a DEMOCRATIC Republic with a government based in Federated Departments which are SUPPOSED to be managed by the actions of our Legislative body, our Funding body, and our appointed Secretaries, who ALL are supposed to have ONE MANAGER, no matter their views or backgrounds. 'Superpowered' long term Congressmen want to verbally assault or get a President of ANY background spit on? Try it standing next to me once. I'd probably instantly demand accountability with physical intervention not typically allowed to police, laugh my asz off in prison for twenty, come out and draw 300 million You Tube hits on my first public statement. WE CAN get this nation under control, but only by holding ourselves accountable. That means ALL of us HUMAN AMERICANS. No more 'executive privilege'. Because YOU ain't 'superpowered' either, Mr. President. Your next vote is ONLY equal to mine, Sir. No more IMMUNITY FROM PROSECUTION AND DISCOVERY PROCESSES, ALL CONGRESSPERSONS, SENATORS, DIRECTORS, SECRETARIES, JURISTS, AND EXECUTIVES. Your clear publicly recorded behaviors initiating your continuing 'immunity' self proclamation are both illegal and treasonous acts against the rights of the people. THE PEOPLE have the right to grant immunity, but you say you are the embodiment of the people, right? EXCEPT that not even a local District Attorney ever asked any citizen, "Who deserves immunity in this case"? Usurped power owned by the people. A political refugee facing a death sentence DESERVES Asylum, Sanctuary, and Immunity from Prosecution for crossing our border illegally, but nothing else. Base criminality is unworthy of American granted Immunity. Get the criminals to turn on themselves some proper way for a change, and always demand true accountability. But inner city gangland youths are out of control and poor white child Lloyd Maxwell is also destined for a life of crime now, American 'parents' whine. Earl, if you read this, fact check me on this one please. It was hot on the heels of WWII when all of those wise old statements like 'a stitch in time saves nine' began disappearing from our various cultures, on public business walls, and in every editorial article written for news. And they are all so cliche' now that you'll see them in Reader's Digest, but usually nowhere else in regular print. Our children now have no wisdom and no moral compass...and no accountability. We sit on butt and request that our young volunteers fight and die in other lands for our "RIGHTS". While we in turn have done so little in these 11 war years to return that sacrifice to them with DEEDS showing the ENTIRE WORLD that we do indeed deserve these rights.
Thank you Earl, for being the real anchor of our Greatest Generation, and I apologize for this impossibly longwinded statement about a First Principle you likely already know by heart. Now I gotta take my three honor students out for ice cream.
@FreeCoffeeNow! Take a writing lesson from one of your honor students, so that people don't drop off by the forth line.
@FreeCoffeeNow! The real problem with our government today, is that it does not have enough Righteous Men, or Women, in it. The Founders knew that no form of government will work, if the people in it are corrupt, greedy, and self righteous. Almost everyone in our government fits that description today, and the ones that don't, fear for their reputations, and even their lives. Electing new people to replace them should be the democratic solution, but, both parties, at the leadership level, are filled with corrupt people, so that it is very hard to replace the bad with the good. Corrupt governments ultimately find their power concentrated in the hands of a tyrant, and that has already happened with our government. Obama is a tyrant, and the rest of the government is transferring their powers to him, so that every day, he is able to rule, more and more, by fiat, another word for dictate. A dictator dictates his will to everyone. We are already living in a tyranny under a dictator, any resembalance to the Democratic Republic we have left, is illusionary.
@FreeCoffeeNow! Your rant was so long I only got to the 4th line and fell asleep!
@Quackula Bite me, Quackers. Learn how to read with an adult's attention span.
@LocalLady  @freecoffeenow!: That's true. I write many papers every year and I would have to give you an F. Sorry.
 @freecoffeenow!:Â
I'm with quackula. Ever hear of paragraphs? Instead of running everything together, use paragraphs, grouping like items together.
Â
All this is is one long harang that makes no sense because it runs together all over the place.
Thank you for your service to your country. Again.
I won't feel sorry for those SCUMS,they deserve many more shots ! Good job !!!
Someone should organize a donation to Mr. Jones to replace his .22lr that was confiscated and attempt to give him back the money that was stolen from him; I would surely donate to that cause, but I do not have any of the social mediums to arrange it
@bob So then you aren't connected to ANY social medium that can handle maybe the entire planets' desires to organize donations to their causes? Think on it while the Jeopardy clock ticks down....
@FreeCoffeeNow! I just enjoy my privacy. I don't feel the need to be instantly connected with a world of viewers. I am not saying that social media is a bad thing it's just not for me thats all. I was only suggesting that it would be nice if there was someone connected to some certain website that would be able to forward donations to this gentlemen. I would definitely donate.
(from the article): <I>The other men involved in the break-in have been charged with burglary and tampering with evidence.</i>
Â
Kentucky needs to toughen its laws. In many states those two would be facing at least 2nd-degree murder charges -- perhaps even 1st-degree murder. Reason: they took part in a crime involving loss of life.
Â
Of course, if Mr. Jones had lived on the latte-sipping Left Coast he would be the one facing murder charges, and the surviving dirtbags would receive months of taxpayer-funded counseling for dealing with their tragic loss.
 @TANSTAAFLÂ
Self defense is permitted in WA and OR. Probably most of CA, too.
Ahh, you're talking about Kentucky here.
@TANSTAAFL No, his behavior is legitimate right here on the Left Coast.
Earl, great shot, thank you for ridding your community of scum.
Excellent shot, Sir!
Excellent!  If they come to rob and steal, they may be there to kill you as well. Thanks for your service - wonder if you fought alongside my Dad.Â
Nice Shot Man!
Right On! I appreciate your service to our county then and NOW!
Thank you for your service then and now!!!
Great, now they are going to want to take our .22s away, because they will be deemed "dangerous assault rifles"
 @Ranger Rick who are they?Â
Nicely done sir. One less drug addictin the world today. Criminals? Let this be a warning. You never know when it's going to be YOU.
@LoudNoises I just wished the criminals would/could read the news so they would know about this.
@DarkParty I'd rather they NOT read the news and be surprised! :)
First, they'd have to have a brain to understand what they are reading.. who says they can read anyway? ;)
There's more than one way that Meth will get you killed. Good shooting Mr. Jones.
Now where are all the boneheads that think all these recent home invasion robberies were drug related and not random. Was this guy holding heroin or something I suppose? Â
@T_BONE_WALKER Where's the guns are bad people saying he should have waited for the police?
@DarkParty  @T_BONE_WALKER Guns are not bad, and this guy did everything right. As for this type of crime being drug related, well, it usually is. It isn't because the victims have drugs. It is because they have valuables that drug addicts can sell in order to get money for drugs. I live in a very small town in the Cascades, and what is really weird is seeing people who were once pretty nice and had opportunities in their lives lose all of that and become addicts who steal. It is so messed up to know that someone you have known since kindergarten and maybe you played sports with and used to hang out with is now casing your house. It has happened to us. Fortunately, both of the guys I'm referring to are in prison now and will be for quite some time.
Efficient! With a 22 caliber no less. Pretty darn good!
Happy ending! and thats what those F*****get.Â
1 out of 3 isn't bad. All three would have been great.
@HawkEye if they didn't turn and run they would have been, He was waiting for them.
Good shoot!!!
Being a criminal is dangerous business. I'm glad our 92 year friend had a gun since he certainly couldn't have duked it out with those 3 guys.
Good shot.
Awesome
