Middle school: 'zombie survival skills' class axed

HERMISTON, Ore. (AP) - A northeastern Oregon school district says an extra-curricular "zombie survival skills" class at a middle school is no more. It has been replaced by an "exploratory reading class."
The Hermiston School District announced the change Wednesday for Armand Larive Middle School.
According to the East Oregonian, Superintendent Fred Maiocco says he was unaware of the zombie class until he read a newspaper article about its popularity.
Maiocco says he "couldn't believe that would actually be a class."
Some parents had questioned the educational value of the class and worried about violent subject matter. Social studies teacher Rich Harshberger told the newspaper his class focused mainly on survival skills and included both a reading and writing component. He'll be teaching the new reading class.

These kids will need survival classes if they don't learn how to read. Maybe they just took a shortcut so they don't have to teach reading. Being in school and learning the basics IS the issue. In the real world it's hard to compete if you don't have at the very least a minimal education. There are ways to engage kids in learning. Nothing is so vital to their well being in life and should be a priority.
That's pretty amazing the fact that a superintendent didn't know the type of classes being taught at his school that he found out by reading the newspaper.
Kids can't even tell time unless it's digital. Maybe they should teach that instead.Â
Realy?
A class that teaches skills for surviving a catastrofic event is cut to make room for class for kids that can't read? In a middle school no less? What aren't ya teaching them prior to middle school? Obviously not reading.
My kid could read when he was 6. And I'm not talking that Dick and Jane crap or Dr. Suess.
Too bad for the kids involved.
Exploratory reading? BORING!
While a zombie survival skill class may be a little out there, I do think that schools need to teach more LIFE SKILLS. Most of the information I learned in school I never ever used. While these students most likely will never need to know how to survive a zombie attack, I am sure there were skills taught that could have been helpful in case of any sort of disaster.Â
So a teacher is trying to get creative and incorporate Zombies into a class that kids would otehrwise choose not to attend, and rather then give it at least a semester to prove itself we force all involved to conform to the "norm" what a shame, I know as a teenager I learned the most from teachers that stepped out of the box and made the class fun and engaging.Â
Come on, if it taught the kids to be more SELF reliant and self responsible while still including reading and writing in the curriculum then I'm all for a little fantasy class as an elective! Let's see, reports on the history of zombies can easily cover the language arts/history requirements. Add in a physical challenge course once or twice a week and they're getting additional physical activity that they often do their best to avoid and they are now actively seeking out as "fun". As part of the final, create a realistic zombie costume, minus any weapons or dripping "gunk" (wouldn't want to violate the sacred student body hand book now would we). That would add in an art component that again many kids find either boring or down right laughable.
Pretty pathetic that they took a class that could have truly engaged the students and cancelled it due to a knee jerk reaction from a few parents before even allowing the students and instructor to present the material and what was being learned.
School should just stick to teaching Reading, Writing, Science, Math,, PE, and History... honestly our schools are in the darn toilet already if people want to take these sort of classes let them do it on others dimes! ... Unless the goal of the US government is to have a population of 'unskilled' welfare bloodsuckers working minimum wage dead end jobs... I will have my work cut out for me when my wife and I have our own children heading to school if this junk is anything to speak for it!
@Freespeech Schools should stick to Languages (minimum 2 required, would like to see 3-4), Science and Math. Everything else should be extra-curricular. History in school is a joke. Do we really need to learn about the Greeks 3 times from the 3 different levels of school? Does history more then 200 years actually serve a purpose when the students and instructors are so far removed from that society and time period that it is extremely difficult to draw a connection to today's life?
That's one of the saddest comments I've ever read here.
i thought zombie survival skills was already in existence in every school...isn't it also known as 'gym class'..?
@bartle_doo except for the fact that despite Gym (or PE depending on your fancy) obesity rates are, pardon the pun, huge.
You don't need to take a class, just watch ZombieLand and keep a copy of the entire list of rules.

Leave it to an uninformed, out of touch, superintendent to stop a class that is both teaching kids good skills and is very popular! Â
Why stop something that is getting kids interested in learning survival skills? Â
@Landshark I would love to see a class teach survival skills much like the program Dual Survivor on TV.  Using the zombie theme is a bit much and not really needed not to mention completely out of touch with reality.  More real life scenarios and less fantasy.
@oledawg
Yeah they should all be practicing for the next school shooting. You know, real life scenarios.Â
I think it was creative. Too bad the school board busted the program up. Proof that once you grow up you lose a certain magic you had when you were a child!
Exploratory reading class = nobody signed up.
