Subway sorry its 'Footlong' came up short

NEW YORK (AP) - Subway is apologizing that its "Footlong" sandwiches fell short of expectations.
The world's largest fast-food chain faced widespread criticism last week after a man posted a photo online showing a "Footlong" next to a tape measure that showed it to be just 11 inches. Subway said Friday that it's redoubling efforts to "ensure consistency and correct length" in all its sandwiches.
The company had already noted last week that bread length could vary when franchisees don't bake to its exact specifications and that it would reinforce policies to ensure consistency.
In a statement Friday, Subway expressed "regret" for "any instance where we did not fully deliver on our promise to our customers."
It declined to comment on lawsuit filed this week by two New Jersey men over the subs.

Sounds like a personal problem !
When I worked at Subway, I had a footlong in the cooler.
I am thinking the two who filed this have a hard time getting enough calories at Subway. Probably the same every where they eat.
Very rarely do I care about corporations, but I actually feel for Subway in this case. This is the stupidest waste of time and most frivolous lawsuit to date since time began. Even worse than the lady that spilled McDonald's coffee on her lap...

Â
Except the McDonald's lady had a legitimate lawsuit. Aside from that, totally agreed.
I think our law makers should be going after all false advertizing. Was looking at different name brands of "pure vegetable" oil yesterday, they all are 100% soy bean oil, soy beans are not a vegetable. Today's GMO soy beans are not even soy beans and are not fit for human or animal consumption.
This dude needs a hobby.
Sounds like people are putting their foot down!
Wow.... really? Â So the bread did not rise as much, BIG FREAKING DEAL! Â So you get a piece of bread with fewer AIR POCKETS. Â I bet the weight was still the same.
Â
Let's make a Federal case out of  it.
This is just my (OPINION), but I think some people out there need to get a life!
I understand there is a Class Action in the works, that could be very interesting. On one side, they do put the same amount of meat on each foot long, so the only difference is one inch of bread. But I would argue that when I buy a six pack, I get a six pack, when I buy a dozen eggs, I get a dozen eggs. When I buy a foot long and you sell me an 11 inch sandwich.........
@dkgiovenco Just give everyone in America a free sub and move on...would be the quickest and cleanest way to clear this up.
I am all for that.
Actually, a âfoot longâ is the name of the type of sandwich, not a military specification.  As MikeCoomer below explained, the dough expands as it rises leaving some shorter and wider or taller, and some longer and skinner. Baking the bread is not exactly rocket science. They all come out approximately a foot long.Â
@oldster70 I'm not commenting on the validity of the lawsuit, and agree that baking can result in somewhat variable results. That said, if the issue was solely the variability of the baking, wouldn't there be a number of instances of 13" sandwiches?
I find it absolutely disgusting how our society sues over every little perceived wrong doing, even if no REAL harm was done. Just a bunch of greedy people trying to earn easy money that they don't have to work for. It's really just a legal way to steal what you haven't earned. I can understand the need to sue a person/company when something happens that causes actual physical/mental harm to an individual/individuals or in BLATANT and PURPOSEFUL false advertising. However, there is no way I can be convinced that Subway purposefully did this to skimp these men (I eat at subway all the time and I've never had any problems with the size of their foot-long or six inch subs) nor can I be convinced that these two men suffered any kind of real emotional or mental trauma because of their sandwich being short by one freaking inch!
Yea, I forgive you no problem. Just because 2 morons in Jersey are stupid enough to sue over something like this doesn't mean the rest of the majority is on the same page. Really classy lawyer as well!
Well, if you're going to advertise 'foot long' or 6" or 6', maybe having a measuring device glued to the counter would be a good idea, kind of like where textiles are sold by the yard.
We are a Obsessive Compulsive Society. The term 'footlong' is applied to 'THE SANDWICH'...... Subway is saying 'the sandwich' is a FOOT LONG........... "The sandwich" is different that the roll it comes-on. Make the sandwich....the fixin's (lettuce, tomato, cheese etc.) hang out over the edge of the roll. Who does not know the difference between the roll and the sandwich? If you want just the roll, with nothing in it, then it might be a smidge less than 12"................but it's THE SANDWICH you're after, right? The next OCD person out there will now carry a scale to ensure that McD's quarter pounders are a quarter pound...another lawsuit waiting to happen.
@Sandbar Good luck with that...the fine print at McD's says it's a quarter pound patty -before- cooking.
make it a class action lawsuit
Of all the stupid things to cry about. Been to a store in the last couple years? Packages of everything keep getting smaller to try to pull one over on the fools being told how great things are. Most of these people are probalbly too clueless to even know why that large can of coffee is called a "3 pound can" by people who are 40 or over.
My kid had a Subway part time job in Auburn, WA last year. The store served expire turkey to customer. They told manager the turkey's day expired. Manager said" it is ok...using"...Then my kid was fired the job....and this store most of employee are illegal worker. I had write an email to the Subway Corp.  ...But did not receive answer. So we WILL NOT EAT their sandwich forever...
@Temmy Huang Judging by your post, I'd venture to guess that you and your kid are "illegal worker" too. Please get a grip on the English language before posting again?
Â
@Harley-H.S.C.  @Temmy Huang You are extremely ignorant.
@Harley-H.S.C.@Temmy Huang
Come on man, perhaps he immigrated here, what difference does that make? Â My mother was in immigrant, got a college degree, and still had some crazy English at times (and a thick accent), didn't make her a stupid person. Â
Â
If any of us moved abroad and tried to work and integrate with other societies, I'm sure, we too would stick out a bit and have some curious sentence structure and such. Â My point is, just because his English isn't textbook perfect, that doesn't make him dumb nor does it make his opinion any less valid.Â
Â
@Temmy Huang Are you sure you have any clue how to read a date?

@Glenn Gordon doesn't hide ) @Alex Clayton @Temmy We can speculate on that OR we could talk about sure i am you are being a jerk right now. ??? Another proud public school grad huh? A job at a fast food joint should be a good fit for you.
@Temmy Huang Subway is a franchise, you need to speak with the owner of the retail store and not the corporation, for immediate action.  I am sure the corporation contacted the owner...
Waiting for McDonalds and Burger King to applogize that their food does NOT look like it does in their commercials. #HoldingBreath
@iphlogger For the commercial look, you have to order your meal with Elmer's Glue, brown spray paint, and cardboard.  It looks great, but doesn't taste that good.Â
@iphlogger They always list a disclaimer, especially when it comes to burger weight. #hashtagsarestupidoutsideoftwitter
Where can you eat that much stuff for $5 or $6? Â The Veggie Delight, the Veggie Patty and the Falafel (west coast) subs are a steal! Â Even at on 11''! Â
It is an old English foot. That is it is the length of the rulersâ foot (i.e. the CEO of Subway). I believe it is a smaller person and the sandwich would be too big as it is....
I had to eat Subway everyday for a year since there was nothing else where I used to work.
I am sure if Subway hadn't advertised "foot long", no one would care. Stupid ad agency nuts should be fired.
Â
Does anyone measure Quiznos subs? I don't think so.
@Vince You "had to eat Subway for a year..."?   Perhaps you chould have just brought food from home and then you could have freed yourself from Subway entirely.  That's what I do and it's cheaper and makes me less a victim of the ad agencies and commercials. Â
Â
Eat healthy and well :-)
@John Bassett  @Vince Vince didn't state his situation...he may have been having to stay in a place without food prep facilities.
Their prices have been slowly creeping up over the past few months.. all the while their customers are getting shorted. It is now $8 for a "footlong" sandwich that used to cost $7 or $7.25 depending on the shop. They have removed sandwiches from the $5 everyday menu and made them $5.25 and $5.50. I only go there for the monthly special now.
@BigBrother206 BLT still on the $5 menu.
Yah, I bet they're sorry...but I don't eat their sandwiches anymore anyway!
I can not believe how petty society has become. Just watch. Subway will over-correct and someone will sue because their sub was 12.5 inches long.
@achoo2 While I agree suing over a sandwich is petty, there is an element of responsibility on Subway's part for truth in advertising, especially when a sandwich costs like 8 or 9 bucks.
@Dredd57  @achoo2 Um, it's a baked good that is not put in loaf pans.  There is (or at least should be) a reasonable expectation that they are not all going to be the same size.  Anyone who thinks otherwise needs to get their head examined.
@Dredd57  @achoo2 I don't hear anyone complaining about the 12.5" sandwiches that I'm sure are out there. It's all a matter or how the bread was thawed, proofed, and baked and there are going to be differences in size, color, and shape from one loaf to the next. I'm really amazed this has gotten as much play as it has.
Â
Mike
@Dredd57  @achoo2 Actually, my wife and I were Subway franchisees for a number of years and I can assure you that some are shorter, others are longer. No assumptions involved.
@MikeCoomer  @achoo2 Unless you've seen a 12.5" sandwich with your own eyes, that's a moot point based solely on an assumption.Â
