Kind hearts save ailing woman from eviction
By Elisa Jaffe
SEATTLE -- A Renton woman getting evicted from her apartment after brain surgery suffered a big medical setback Tuesday.
Danielle Gentry recently underwent surgery for a brain aneurism. Doctors ordered her to get plenty of rest, but her rent is past due, she supports her mother and son, and deputies were coming to evict her. The stress apparently led to a seizure Tuesday, giving a setback to her recovery. As an ultrasound technician, Gentry can't go back to work until she heals. But KOMO viewers couldn’t sit back and see Gentry go homeless. Her plight struck a chord with dozens of viewers who donated to our Problem Solvers fund to help stop her pending eviction. She received a $200 donation from an Ocean Shores woman who said life shouldn't be this rough. Other donations of $100-$200 rolled in -- then a donation of $2,000 saying they were touched by her story. Another anonymous donor gave $3,000 and wanted Danielle to know she wasn't alone. We received enough money to ask apartment managers to stop the eviction. We handed him a check for her back rent and two months' future rent. As soon as Gentry returned from the emergency room, we told her she didn't have to move. She can now recover at home without worrying where that will be, thanks to you. |
