TACOMA -- The lure of getting 95 miles to the gallon was enough for David Day to buy a moped online. But what arrived wasn't so much a moped as a lemon.

"About five days after I bought it, the kickstand breaks," Day said. "This fuse blows almost every day; the handlebars are very loose, so it's dangerous to ride."

And to top it off, his tire keeps going flat.

Day says that's just some of the new moped's malfunctions and missing parts. He says the moped also only gets half the promised gas mileage and only goes half as fast as advertised.

"It's supposed to go 40 (mph) and it goes 20," Day said.

Day fears the scooter that he bought on line in June to save gas money is turning into a worthless money pit. He paid globaltrailer.net nearly $1,000 but hasn't had luck getting parts replaced or money back. So he called the KOMO Problem Solvers.

"I feel like I've been ripped off and I'm just really angry about it," he said.

Day contends he did his homework researching ratings.

"On this, felt like I took my time and I wound up with a lemon," he said.

The one call Day didn't make was to the Better Business Bureau, which has processed 171 complaints against the company in the last three years. Customers have complained about merchandise getting delivered late or broken, they say they had a tough time contacting the company and customer service wasn't helpful.

"I got bounced around and I got hung up on," Days says of globaltrailer.net's customer service.

So we called the Chicago company and got through to parts immediately. I asked that the moped be replaced since Day purchased the one-year warranty and the problems all occurred in the first month. I then put Day on the line and the company promised him the needed parts.

"If this didn't fix the problem, they'd be willing to send me a new bike," Day said. "You guys helped me out and I got my wish."

The company, which goes by a few names: LG Wholesale, Global Trailer, and Legion Global Motorsports, also received several complaints on the consumer website, "Ripoff Report".
