BONNEY LAKE -- Traffic tickets are definitely a drag but imagine the frustration of selling a car, only to find you get a ticket three weeks later when the new owner runs a red light.

Puyallup installed traffic cameras back in March and has been issuing more than 2,000 tickets a month.

A while back, cameras definitely caught Tim Barker's Mazda running a red light at a Puyallup intersection, and soon, one of those $124 tickets was in the mail. But Barker insists he wasn't behind the wheel. He sold that car 3 weeks earlier.

When he sold his car, Barker filed a notice of sale on line with the state. But the Arizona company that monitors the video of red-light violators doesn't receive that information.

"Our vendor does not get report of sale information," said Sgt. Bob Thompson with the Puyallup Police Department. "So if the new owner does not go transfer title and ownership over to their name, it will go to the registered owner."

Barker called the company and complained, but didn't mail in the necessary notarized papers and didn't get his citation tossed out. So KOMO's Problem Solvers took his paperwork proof to Puyallup police.

"We're gonna dismiss the ticket," Thompson said.

This isn't the first case of its kind and Barker fears it won't be the last. He says someone else is going to go through this.

"Absolutely. It's just about the money," Barker said.

But police say the cameras that captured Barker's old car running a red light aren't about money, they're about reducing collisions and complaints.

Police say if you have a dispute over a ticket, just contact them and be sure to save all your paperwork.
