Family healing after boy's horrific accident
They almost make you miss this 2 year old's awful injuries.
The boy and his 4-year-old sister jumped off the back of their grandpa's riding lawn mower. Grandpa didn't see Neiko fall.
"The girls were screaming and I just got up and ran outside. And Neiko was sitting in the grass, naked," said mother Tiffany Oakes.
The mower had backed over Neiko, ripping off his clothes and ripping through his little legs.
"Both legs from back of knee down to ankles were completely mutilated," his mother said. "It looked like he stepped on a mine, because his legs, tissue and bone were everywhere."
Doctors pulled muscles from Neiko's right leg to rebuild his left. They still might have to amputate his foot.
"I'm just thankful he's alive," said his father, Adam Wellborn. "As far as walking or running, time will tell."
Curious George joins Neiko for every surgery and shares his pain.
In the wake of the tragedy, Neiko's parents sent their daughters to stay with relatives in Hawaii. It's been a month and they say they can't afford the return flights or family activities.
The Seattle Aquarium and Woodland Park Zoo donated passes to Neiko's family. And Alaska Airlines offered free flights so grandma can pick up the girls and bring them back to Seattle.
Together, the family will begin healing.
