MILTON, Wash. -- Tragedy left a family here divided in their own home. Upstairs lived a paralyzed son who was unable to go downstairs to see his paraplegic mother.
But KOMO viewers and the Problem Solvers were able to help fix the family's problem.
Josh Clayton had bought the home to take care of his mother Mary, who was bedridden by Multiple Sclerosis.
"Some people hate to live with their mom," he said. "I moved my mom in."
But a car wreck crushed his spine. He can't get downstairs without a struggle.
"Mother's Day was the last time I saw her," he said.
Josh came down twice in a 10-month period and that involved five people carrying him down the steps.
Thanks to KOMO viewers who donated a total of $30,000, the family is no longer divided by disabilities -- you bought them an elevator.
"We had a woman I found out who donated $2 because that's all she had and I think that made me cry the most," said Mary Clayton.
Tom Kawamoto from Northwest Elevations volunteered the labor and sold the Problem Solvers the elevator at cost.
Mary says this will do more than change their lives.
"It's gonna give us a life," she said, "and we just want you to know what it's meant to us, it's a miracle."
Mary and Josh can again keep each other company and read each other's faces, but even an outsider can see the joy.
"Our goal is that we are going to have Thanksgiving together," Mary said.
Thankful that they'll sit together as a family at a table on the same floor.
