SEATTLE -- Spring break and sunshine reminded parents it's already time to start registering for summer camp.

A few weeks at camp can cost thousands of dollars, but there are ways to keep camp within your budget.

Securing a slot at summer camp can be pricey for parents, especially in these penny-pinching times. Day and overnight camps range from $300 to $2,300, depending on activities and length of stay. And parents are looking for options.

"Well, we started thinking about it after he came back from camp last year because he had such a great experience," said parent Leslie Markham. "Had to start planning with our budget at the beginning of the year in January."

Opting for day camp rather than sleep-away camp can slash prices. Some are cutting back on sessions and letting friends take turns watching children.

Like many camps, the YMCA offers campers a sliding scale, providing parents anywhere from $50 to the whole tab.

"This summer, for the first time, we're offering payment plans that include an extended payment plan," said Chris Pierce, executive director of YMCA's camping services.

The Y is preparing for a spike in financial assistance requests, and expects 40 percent of its day camper families will need help.

"If you were to have a job change status between now and start of summer, we would work with you and honor the registration," Pierce said.

Check to see if your employer offers flexible spending accounts for dependent care. That can help you set aside money to cover day camp. And before saying"no" to camp, consider the costs of entertaining, feeding and sitting your kids if they stay home.

"It's pretty overwhelming when look at amount of money, and then look at costs per week and per day. And that helps and then value the experience that he's gonna get," Markham said.

It's tough to put a price tag on your little camper's joy.

You may also want to check churches for camp deals. Sometimes you can find a week-long church camp for $150.
