Apple: 2 million new iPhones sold in 24 hours

CUPERTINO, Calif. (AP) - Orders for the iPhone 5 topped 2 million in their first 24 hours, more than double the amount of its predecessor over the same period.
Apple started taking iPhone 5 orders at 3 a.m. EDT on Friday.
The company also says that while most orders will be delivered on Friday, demand for the iPhone 5 exceeds the initial supply, so some of the devices are scheduled for delivery in October.
The Cupertino, Calif. company's stock added $7 to $698.28 in morning trading after rising as high as $699.54 earlier in the session.
The iPhone 5 has a bigger screen -4 inches (10.16 centimeters) measured diagonally- that allows room for another row of icons and lets widescreen movies fit better. The calendar will now show five days at a time instead of just three. Previous iPhone models carried 3.5-inch (8.89-centimeter) screens. The phone is also thinner and weighs less than previous models.
Janney Capital Markets analyst Bill Choi said Apple's announcement Monday "suggests iPhone 5 is running well ahead of iPhone 4S." In a note to investors, Choi reaffirmed his earlier expectation that Apple will sell 7 million to 10 million iPhone 5s by the end of September.
It won't be an easy feat for Apple to top the breakneck sales pace set by previous iPhones. Apple said last year that it sold over 4 million iPhone 4Ss just three days after its launch on October 14. That launch occurred less than two weeks after the death of Apple's iconic founder Steve Jobs and as the iPhone 4S went on sale, scores of Apple devotees were still mourning him with candlelight vigils and impromptu memorial ceremonies outside of Apple stores across the globe.
The iPhone 5 will be available at Apple's 356 U.S. stores starting Friday. It sells for $199 for the 16 gigabyte model, $299 for the 32 GB or $399 for the 64 GB model. Each customer that makes a purchase at an Apple store will be offered free personal setup service, which will help them customize their device.
The phone will be available in more than 22 countries on Sept. 28.
Aside from Apple stores, the iPhone 5 will be available at Apple's website as well as through AT&T, Sprint, Verizon Wireless, some Best Buy, RadioShack, Target and Walmart stores and certain Apple authorized resellers.
Earlier Monday AT&T Inc. said it set a sales record for the iPhone 5, with customers ordering more of them than any previous iPhone model on the first day of orders and over the weekend.

I foresee people robbing and killing other people for this phone in the near future.Â

Â
I find all the haters quite entertaining. If the iPhone doesn't work for you, great. If it does, even better. The iPhone works for me, and I will own an iPhone 5, it will not own me @KeithBÂ . Wait a minute, what's this? I also have a tablet running the Android OS? Did the World just explode?
Â
If it works for you, buy it and enjoy it. If it doesn't go buy something else. Apple haters will always complain and Apple fans will never care about Apple haters.
 @Gadsden  @KeithB Good for you...
God people are dumb. The phone itself will probably be good, but not spectacular, and probably 75% or more of the people buying it can't afford it. The best part though is that they are buying it to get features they could have had almost two years ago on another phone...lol!
@chuckh0308 Pretty ironic chuck.  Your post is the dumbest post I've ever seen calling people dumb.  You think the only reason people but it is for the features?  I got it because I'm on a very old 3GS that isn't working well anymore, I'm on an upgrade cycle, and I don't want to change ecosystems to Android or Windows.  That's also why a lot of other people got it.  God chuckh0308 is simplistic, myopic, and moronic. Â
2 million people are now owned by iPhone 5.
iFools!
Hmm, my android already has a screen large enough to accomodate that many rows of icons, and is expandable right out of the box to 32GB with an SD card, and I only paid $50 for it brand new.
@northwestsurfer You are so smart and amazing and better than other people.  I wish I could feel as good about myself as you do about yourself.  Wow, you are so cool.  It must be that being a surfer makes you better than other people to begin with.  We all bow to you your majesty.  Now go save stuff on your SD card-- I just do it to The Cloud so don't need extra memory on my phone-- I know-- dumb.  What an a**-clown. Â
@MPS I got two comments from you, they both basically say the same thing. Thanks for the compliments, I appreciate it.
@northwestsurfer Well hey we are all happy for you. You bought a phone that works for you. And the phone that works for other people will be any one of a plethora of phones. Was there a point in there somewhere?
I'm sorry did you say something? I didnt quite catch that.
Time to head to the Apple store for another round of iDolatry.
I went to Starbucks on my lunch break. Every single customer, barring myself, was looking down at their cellphone or laptop. There were 15-20 people there that didn't lift their eyes away from their screens except to grab their coffee off the bar. The sad part is: that's what my family Thanksgiving looked like too.
Â
I refuse to buy a new cell phone until mine breaks. And I won't be buying Apple, not because I'm anti-hipster, but because I like supporting Microsoft based products.
It seems it's everywhere. A person cannot even make eye contact walking down the street anymore! Seems the only time they do is when they run in to you because they were staring at their phone instad of where they going.
@kockatoo I've had my Samsung Focus (Windows Phone 7) phone since the day it released (almost 2 years now) and have had zero issues with it. Although usually I don't replace phones until they break, this one I'm going to replace with a new Windows Phone 8. Â
Â
Personally, I feel that it's rude to use a phone in a social gathering that you've been invited to. Â The exception to this is if you are showing off pictures or something (such as, "Hey, check out some pictures of our baby!" which is the equivalent of pulling out a wallet full of baby photos).
Â
Unfortunately, with the younger and younger generations the lack of social standards and attentiveness is spiraling down.
@Landshark  @kockatoo I agree, or doing research that is related to the conversation. If you're just sitting there on Facebook or something then I think that's pretty freaking rude!
@kockatoo I was once invited to hang out at a bar with a group of people I didn't know. They spent half the time on their phones rather than talking to each other.
@kockatoo That Thanksgiving sounds familiar.  My mom banned cell phones from the table during Thanksgiving and said anyone who had one at the table would not be coming over for Christmas.Â
@KRM66  @kockatoo I banned them at every dinner.
@CrankyPanky @KRM66 @kockatoo I think smart phones are great; now I can watch porn at work while sitting at my desk.
Love Apple products, but this just amazes me. These figures, along with movie box office figures, make me want to scream. I personally know 6 people that are underwater on their mortgage, buried in credit card debt and complaining about gas and food prices..... but those same people announced on facebook that they bought this new phone. Instant gratification and irresponsible at its best! Not saying no one should buy the phone but maybe your mortgage should come first. Just sayin.
@AlwaysSpeakUpforLogic ha, I have no credit card debt, no mortgage since I chose to rent rather than buy a house I couldnt afford. I have a loan for my used auto, my school loans are $70 per month, and my android I bought a year ago was $50 brand new. I agree with you, too much money, and strange what people choose to spend their money on
@northwestsurfer  @AlwaysSpeakUpforLogic again, nwsurfer, you are so very, very special and better than others.  If only we could all be just like you.  Then the world would be perfect. Â
"The iPhone 5 sells for $199 for the 16 gigabyte model, $299 for the 32 GB or $399 for the 64 GB model."
Â
This doesn't seem right to me. Â I saw 8gb Ipods still selling for $199
@oledawg It's all marketing, contract fees reduce the initial price - you pay the extra over two years.
Â
Worst part is that the extra 16 GB of memory only costs $15 if you were to buy it in the shops (closer to $5 in bulk wholesale), so they are making a fortune on the higher capacity devices in comparison to the base model.
More of our money bleeding out to "China, Inc's" factories...
@TheTruncheon Although I love Apple and practically everything they create, I am not okay with many of their products being made overseas. I would love to see this nation put Americans first for once.
Â
I believe that the outsourcing of American jobs should either be made illegal or if US corporations choose to do so they should be taxed heavily to the point it is not economically feasible to do so. Germany has practically zero outsourcing and is booming in this global recession. Their corporate boards are comprised of labor. This is a model the US should emulate and require. NAFTA should be repealed and renegotiated and the tax code rewritten closing all loopholes that corporations use to avoid paying a dime (i.e., GE). You don't want to pay your fare share of taxes here in the US, then get out.Â
 @HallandOates  @TheTruncheon
With the King of Outsourcing vying for the presidency, don't expect that to happen anytime soon. If anything, you can expeçt an increase in tax incentives for companies to ship moee American jobs overseas if he wins.
@HallandOates  @TheTruncheon While H&O and I differ on many things, in this we agree. The only thing I differ on is the fact that many of the corporations were driven overseas by taxes in the first place. On the other hand if the government double taxed corporations for every dollar they made overseas and half taxed them for every dollar they brought back they would come back quickly.
Headline should read "2 million sheep purchased new iphones".Â
I call them iDiots ^_^
