Fishy performance under fire in China

By Travis Mayfield

My Chinese-Canadian in-laws were watching a special Chinese New Year television special on CCTV (China Central Television) this past weekend as I sat on the couch absorbed in something else.

However I couldn’t help but look up as a guest came on and proceeded to display his goldfish swimming in formation, seemingly at his command.

I was fascinated and a little horrified, but then quickly forgot.

Now it turns out that performance has sparked quite a controversy in China where animal rights activists are accusing the magician Fu Yandong of animal cruelty.

The Village Voice is reporting the activists’ specific claim:

Fu had likely fed the fish magnets -- or implanted them in the fish -- so they could be dragged around their tank from underneath.

CCTV has actually cancelled a planned repeat performance, but a regional competitor has now reportedly booked him for an on-air performance.
